It's ok, but already somewhat dated in this fast moving field. For example, Nicotinamide came out after his book, and is not included. More oddly, he entirely skips some areas of longevity research. For example, in his emphasis on pills to mimick calorie restriction, he totally ignores the valuable research of Valter Longo on doing actual calorie restriction relatively painlessly. Maybe someday a pill can provide all the benefits of fasting without actually fasting, but we know that fasting will certainly provide the benefits of fasting. LOL
I usually get bored easily with most of the non fiction science related books I read due to the amount of claims with no references and too many generalities. But this book had none of that. I was so amazed about how well the writer knew the drama and history behind aging research and most top researchers. The book read more like a medical novel to me and it kept me interested until the end. I am looking forward to any future books he writes!Great work and highly recommended!Nelson VergelAuthor
I have now read three books on anti-aging research [(1) "Ending Aging" by DeGrey, (2) "Eternity Soup" by Critser, and now (3) "The Youth Pill" by Stipp]. Hands down,"The Youth Pill" is the best book out there today. This book succeeds where both DeGrey and Critser failed. Critser's book, in my opinion was an outright dud, providing little substantive information and an immature writing style to boot. DeGrey's book was very informative, but it mainly focused on DeGrey's own work and opinions, some of which are controversial, and in a few cases, scientifically outlandish. Stipp has written the most objective overview of the field, and has done a masterful job. For a business writer, Stipp is surprisingly accurate at describing the scientific history of this field. He gives credit to almost everyone who deserves it, without any overly positive or negative biases. The book is not too long, and each chapter is fulfilling (unlike DeGrey's and Critser's books). I congratulate this author on a fine addition to this field which should be THE FIRST book that anyone truly serious about getting a broad perspective on anti-aging research should read. Well done!
I have been reading several books about the anti-aging initiative and science behind it. If you read one book about it, I recommend "Ending Aging" by Aubrey de Grey, but if you read several, this is a must. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the science came to be, focusing on case studies and particular people and instances which had an effect on the science as we know it today, and a projection of what lies ahead.Though a bit hard to read (not only for the author's eloquent word choices that were often above my head, requiring a dictionary near by, but also for the deep subject matter, and delightful pacing between light humor and hard science), I feel the book offers valuable information summarized to one text. Part of the confusion too is how the author discusses case studies and details which are never really put into context in ways that relate them to each other. I suppose that's the job of the scientist's though. The information is there, but it's up to to others to piece it together.Another thing to note is how the author doesn't take too much bias to one side. Though there is striking scientific evidence which hold some promise coming from all different directions, he takes each one with a sense of possibility and skepticism. This is important, because running with the wrong information or discrediting correct information could certainly hold us back in our quest to end and manage aging (which, in my opinion, should be our focus in society right now).I also enjoyed the Audible edition (which I highly recommend because it helps you pronounce correctly the names and scientific vernacular). It was clear, well-read, though there were a few discrepancies between the text and the audio edition (though I have the 2011 edition). I was able to read along at a pace much quicker than my normal reading speed.Thank you, David Stipp, for this wonderful book, and thank you, Amazon, for introducing it to me.
I enjoyed the book. The book gives different insights on possible breakthroughs on extending life. I took from the book is their are a variety of different variables that impact longetivity. I.E. there is no quick answer. Its very nuanced. Interesting read. Highly recommended.

I am a red wine aficionado so I read Chapter 9 first. This helped me navigate through the rest of the book with a greater understanding than if I had started with Chapter 1. The difficulty in writing about the topic of the book is that new insights into aging are uncovered every day. This means that any book written on the topic, including this book, is obsolete before it is published.I recommend to the book to anyone interested in the topic...and who isn't.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read several others here, and they all seemed mostly about self-promotion, which is not a bad thing, but I shouldn't have to weed through self-promotion to get to the meat of the content. Colligan's book gave precise non-techy information on how to podcast.He was very clear, and unlike other authors in "how to" podcast space, he gave insight and helpful resources, but was not an elitist about it. I know a lot about content marketing, but some of these podcaster "experts" are "my-way or the high-way of failure" if you don't do exactly, and buy exactly this or that. Although Colligan is explicit in what to steer clear of, he does it in a way that is friendly and insightful. He gives a lot of resources, and I mean a lot.The book is broken out into 4 steps to get you going:(Colligan gives options and many resources)1. How to make digital media - streamline, efficient, and simple ways for the non-techy.2. How and where to put it online - again efficient and simple ways.3. How to make it ready4. Most, if not all, go into what they use, how they use it, and why they use it. Great layout in my opinion.The most important point of this book is, is you don't have to spend a crap load of money to be a podcaster. I can honestly say, that out of all the books listed her on pocasting, this book is relevant, written for beginners (and resources for all skill levels), and is well written. I feel confident that if you read this book and are serious about podcasting, you will be up and DOING in no time at all.

I pre-ordered mine a while back, and begged Paul for an advance pdf just a couple of days early, as I had my first interviews lined up -- and didn't want to miss anything important. I sat down and read it cover-to-cover.What I love about the book is the simplicity of the first half, and the framework of the 4 steps. It's very clear, here's what to do, it's not that hard, just do it. After I read it, I said to myself, "Ok, I can do this!" And I started that process last night -- got 3 interviews, one of which is a true hero story and was quite a surprise! And because of the book, I feel confident that I'l have no problems with the other steps.The second half of the book is also quite interesting. It's a number of transcribed interviews (or submissions) that Paul had with successful podcasters -- each of them talking about something different when it comes to how-to's. Fascinating and informative to hear what everyone is doing to hear what everyone is doing and it definitely added on tremendous value because each has a different focus in terms of how-to. About the Author
Timothy Samara is a graphic designer based in New York City, where he divides his time between teaching, writing, lecturing, and freelance consulting through STIM Visual Communication. His 18-year career in branding and information design has explored projects in print, packaging, environments, user interface design, and animation. He has been a senior art director at Ruder Finn, New York's largest public relations firm, and senior art director at Pettistudio, a small multidisciplinary design firm. Before relocating to Manhattan, he was principal of Physiologic in Syracuse, located in upstate New York. In 1990, he graduated a Trustee Scholar from the Graphic Design program at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Mr. Samara is a faculty member at New York's School of Visual Arts, New York University, Purchase College/SUNY, and The New School, and has published six books on design and typography, all through Rockport Publishers: Making and Breaking the Grid; Typography Workbook; Publication Design Workbook; Type Style Finder; Design Elements; and, most recently, Design Evolution, released in January 2008. About the Author
Radley Balko is an investigative journalist and reporter at the Washington Post. He currently writes and edits The Watch, a reported opinion blog that covers civil liberties and the criminal justice system. He is the author of the 2013 book Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces, which has won widespread acclaim, including from the Economist, New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly, and was named one of the best investigative journalism books of the year by the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University. Since 2006, Balko has written dozens of pieces on Hayne, West, and Mississippi's forensics disaster. His January 2013 investigation, "Solving Kathy Mabry's Murder: Brutal 15-Year-Old Crime Highlights Decades-Long Mississippi Scandal," was one of the most widely read Huffington Post articles of 2013. In 2015, Balko was awarded the Innocence Project's Journalism Award, in part for his coverage in Mississippi.Tucker Carrington is the director of the George C. The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist is by turns engaging, depressing, exciting, and enraging—and a monumental work of investigative storytelling about how junk science polluted justice for a generation in one state.In the hands of lesser writers, this would have simply been a story of good and evil, of heroes and villains. But Balko and Carrington paint a much more nuanced picture, an almost Southern gothic tale. While the titular physician and dentist are exposed for the quacks and frauds they are, the system in which they operated isn't cast as a simple morality tale. Path dependency in the common law (the coroner being an office that traces back to medieval England), the ghosts of the Civil War and Jim Crow, well-intended US Supreme Court decisions, and political factionalism combine to set the stage for a generation-long fraud on the people of Mississippi. Most of all, Balko and Carrington highlight the terrible incentives facing everyone in the state's death investigation and criminal justice system, telling stories of justice gone horribly wrong.Balko and Carrington have penned a gripping page-turner of an expose that shows both the best and the worst of mankind, and the power of institutions to look past and even condone the morally indefensible. "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" is a cry for reform, not just in Mississippi, but in courts and capitols across the country.
Unfair. Out of control. Corrupt. A travesty of American justice. Venal. Self-serving. These descriptors barely carve a small chip off the surface of the list of infractions committed by and under the aegis of the US judicial system. The extent of the rot eating at the base of the already rotten legal edifice is - for those that still believe in the concept of "rule of law" and impartial, reasoned, balanced application of impartial, reasoned and balanced laws - almost beyond cataloguing. So instead, Balko and Carrington have selected one little microcosm from a very broad potential palette of connivance, and warped, perverted, distorted applications of pseudo-science and presented it in a concise, interesting and valuable book. Stories chosen from a veritable rogues' gallery of distilled garbage issuing forth from an imaginative "Chuckie" of the dental profession (Michael West) and a blood-sucking barber-surgeon cum pathologist, Steven West, aided by prosecutors and DAs, "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" illustrate the enormity of the problem.By this point in 21st century America, only the most inveterate optimist or intellectually besotted citizen could imagine that the legislative, judicial and enforcement bodies in this country maintain any reasonable degree of fealty to the ideal presented to the general public. The arc of destiny may bend toward justice, but it will evidently only converge with it in another space-time continuum.The corruption of our democratic ideals may have reached it's apex with the election of Donald Trump to the presidency, but it most certainly didn't begin in 2016. Balko and Carrington take care to describe the history of ,and oftentimes muddled distinction between, a coroner (an elected and not necessarily medically qualified and/or competent official) and a board certified physician expert in medical forensics. That's a core distinction and serious problem featured in this book.The plot line in "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" is constructed on the stories of two black men of the "lower classes" in rural Mississippi. Lest the reader think that the judicial and law enforcement rush to judgement (one based on prejudice, racism, convenience, and expediency - all buttressed with bogus claims on the uniqueness of bite marks and assembly line quality, dry-lab, slipshod, negligent autopsies proffered by avaricious, egomaniacal snake oil salesmen, Drs. West and Hayne) is confined to benighted rural pockets of the Deep South, consider the famous case of Steven Avery, a white man from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Avery served 18 years in prison on a wrongful conviction for sexual assault and attempted murder. He was fully exonerated by DNA evidence, as was also (eventually) the case for the men featured in this book. Seeking restitution (if that's even possible), Avery took legal action against the county. Not to be outdone, law enforcement pulled a Trump and counter-attacked: in 2005, Avery was arrested on charges of murdering a local photographer and was convicted in 2007. It was a frame-up relying in large part on pseudo-scienc, just like the multiple false convictions in Mississippi and elsewhere. Take it as a given that the Great Panjandrum propelling the cases in "Cadaver King" (the distinguished Mr. Hood) has yet to acknowledge either his own perfidy and his manifest and deliberate ignorance of his responsibilities as an attorney general (and he's a Democrat!)What Balko/Carrington and Ricciardi/Demos and many, many others convincingly convey is that this is a "world gone wrong". The fact that no meaningful changes have occurred despite intense publicity conveys the fact that those who write the laws and those that enforce them don't care about the perversions of justice they perpetuate, nor do they seemingly grasp that the two-tiered judicial system (you get the best justice your money can buy) is untenable. That conclusion is made explicit in the book and in Balko's many columns in "The Washington Post". He and other investigative journalists, concerned lawyers (there are a few) and a few "folks" are fighting a quixotic battle against "people bending broken rules" (Bob Dylan's phrase). Even the recent involvement of the formidable Koch organization in sentencing reform has hit the impenetrable Van Allen Belt of highly energized, reactionary, corporatist and fear-fueled populist opposition.The Balko/Carrington book is very well written and comprehensively referenced, especially as the Charlatan Kings are extremely litigious. So, every claim must be (and has been) carefully researched and referenced. The glaring problem with the book is the absence of an index. A bit more could be offered on the dubious legal background (e.g., the Frye decision) that allows introduction of non-science nonsense as alleged fact. As noted by the authors, leaving this decision to the judicial system (current practice) begs for the type of abuse detailed in this book and assures its continuation into the indefinite future. In other words, many more innocents will be incarcerated and many more "game over" decisions will be made by the ossified and self-important judicial mandarin "deciders". In short, many falsely convicted citizens will rot in jail because that's the system.As it happens, the constellation of forces favoring swift, "certain", retributive punishment is in ascendance. Efforts by Balko and company appeal to the converted: can you imagine enough open minded legislators and members of the legal/judicial/enforcment professions taking on a system that so many of them profit from? Unlike the legions of falsely convicted and later redeemed heroes of 19th century novels, swashbuckling crusaders for justice aren't on the near horizon. It will take a case of a truly monstrous nature suffered by a popular "People Magazine" cover star (Jay-Z?) to focus public attention on the problem. I find that many of the recipes are expensive to duplicate Many of the recipes call for tomatoes,preferably "San Marzano." With the herbs and seasonings used in these recipes, you couldn't tell a San Marzano from a Imperial Valley(California) tomato. The prep for some recipes is very time consuming. The flavor profiles that the recipes bring to the table; is the twist I was referring to. I have made a couple of recipes, and they were delicious. Lots of flavor and aroma. I bought this Rao's cookbook to add to the one I purchased fifteen years ago. Recipes from the New York original Rao's. That has some fantastic recipes.

Thid book has delicious recipes that you take from the indoor kitchen to the back yard. Really fun for cooking with the family or a crowd. Love the signature lemon chicken, ribeyes with sage sauce, all the seafood and grilled veggies and salads. A must have if you have the other Raos books, been to the restaurant or had a grandmother who cooked real immigrant Italian food. Fortunately I have experienced them all. Buy it.
This was a Christmas gift for my son-in-law who had eaten at Rao's in NY. He is anxious to try some of these recipes on his grill.
It will be fun to try the recipes on my Green Egg.
Franks' lemon chicken recipe is even better than his original one. This is the best Italian Grill book that I have purchased. It is truly a book with Rao's Quality.

About the Author
Justin Locke spent 18 years as a freelance double bass player in Boston, where he played with the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony, as well as in pit orchestras for operas, ballets, and Broadway shows. The long list of distinguished conductors he played for includes Henry Mancini, Leonard Bernstein, seiji Ozawa, John Williams, and Arthur Fiedler.He is a "score reader" for television broadcasts of the Boston Pops, and he is the author of several programs for family orchestra concerts which are done all over the world.

I thought this book was fascinating! I sang the Great American Songbook with symphony orchestras from the mid-eighties through the early 2000s, including some of the finest in the country such as the Pittsburgh and the Cincinnati (sadly though, never the Boston Pops). I studied classical piano for ten years, so I respect and admire the fine symphonic musicians I worked with. Thanks to Justin Locke's book, I also realize why my technique was never that great....I NEVER spent time practicing scales and exercises. I just played pieces I enjoyed playing...and a little sloppy technique?....well...I was never going to be a concert pianist...so I just played for fun. Still do. BUT..after reading his book, I realize how much better I COULD have been. A real eye-opener for me. And, oddly enough, one of my greatest regrets is that I never learned to play classical bass!
A delightful insider's look into the world of orchestral playing. Justin Locke contends that most of the time when great conductors are waving their arms and making faces, the orchestra is just playing the standard repertoire as it has been doing for years, paying little attention to the on podium histrionics. True, as a regular member of the Boston Pops under Fiedler he was not subjected to the careful preparation of more profound musicians like Solti and Kleiber, but there is a lot to be said that the modern conductor has been given much too much credit for what we hear. This book offers lots of wonderful anecdotes about the average hard-working musician's life. As Mrs. Loman once said, "Attention should be paid."
This was a very easy read. What I appreciate is the humor that the author so deftly navigates between being a consumate professional and a wise cracking, sharp tongued player. I have been a full time singer for 15 years+ and I could relate to every single thing he said. I found myself laughing at every turn.
I am three years back to my bass after a 14-year hiatus (why, oh why did I ever stop?)...after having played from grade-thru-grad school. I returned to find electronic tuners, end pins that actually work, blogs just for bassists, and Justin Locke's wonderful book. I ordered it via Amazon, and it was fulfilled directly by Justin (complete with a nice note on the packing slip.) I squirreled it away for vacation, and gobbled it up last week in one wonderful day. The back of the book bears a warning not to read in "the quietude of a library, as you're apt to break out into uproarious laughter." I would amend that to "anywhere in public" since I frequently found myself hooting, belly-laughing, slapping my thighs, and laughing so hard I snorted...with tears streaming from my eyes. This is really bizarre looking on a beach but I was having such a great time I did not care. Anyone who has played an instrument with a musical group - not just bassists - will delight in this book...but for bassists, it is a treasure.Justin's perspective on conductors (oooh, he played with Fiedler and on tour with Mancini), stand partners, spinning basses (wonder if I can bring to our community orchestra) and symphony management idiosyncrasies are priceless.My favorite passage though is about bassist attitude..."While I can only comment on the bass sections I played in, the attitude we always had could be summed up as, "this thing is pretty much impossible to play, we're doing the best we can, and we really don't want to be here anyway, so don't bother us with your prissy nitpicking."" Amen, Justin.After all, as he notes, "...since bass players are so rare, you don't have to be terribly good, or even all that motivated, to be wonderfully successful at it." What you do have to have is spirit, a sense of humor, and attitude, and Justin delivers.Buy the book, enjoy, and pass it on to your musician friends and your family (maybe they will finally understand you.)
very funny stories - a little slow at times, but a nice look at the backstage of a major orchestra and all of the funny things that can go on. Sort of like Mozart in the Jungle, light...
“Real Men Don’t Rehearse†is a superbly funny read. The author is a keen observer of people and events, and a great storyteller with a real gift for relating what he has seen to provide telling insights into the world of the working musician. The anecdotes certainly ring true based on my experience as a professional musician, though you don’t have to be a professional musician to enjoy them. I have given copies of the book as gifts for students and friends, and they have inevitably loved it. Highly recommended!
Fun look at a professional musician in a professional orchestra. He talks a lot about the structure of the professional orchestras, how he got the job and how much fun he had. My brother is a professional musician but he rarely talks about his gigs.
A thoughtful and revealing read about the inner workings of an orchestra and the minds of the players who make the music. This book rings true on so many levels and this is from a former violinist and current multi-cam live television director. When you get to that chapter you'll understand the significance.
