This book should be required reading for every seminarian, pastor and church leader serving in the North American context. While the category label above the ISBN indicates that this book would be sorted amongst the hundreds of other “Church Life†books, Van Gelder has, in fact, provided us with a theological volume that roots the mission of church in the Scriptures. Building on this foundation, he seeks to compel the church to restore its underpinnings as the representatives and participants in God’s mission for the world.The Missional movement has gained many adherents but has also suffered from some bad PR, often being lumped in with the Emergent Church. Where the latter is a distinctly postmodern phenomenon, the missional nature of the Church has been God’s design since the very beginning. Van Gelder takes a systematic approach to outlining this design and its application drawing directly from the Scripture. His methodology draws some criticism because it is not a how-to manual for implementing this design. Reading carefully to the end of the book points out the specific reason why the books outline and this expectation would be at odds; the local church by its very nature is context driven and dependent.Both Hirsch and Van Gelder seek the same end, a church more aware of its missional calling. Where Hirsch can be more abstract in his thinking and application, Van Gelder writes a more concise and concrete theological work. Don’t pick up this book to look for a manual on how to make your church Missional. Do pick up this book to guide yourself and your staff through what God’s word says about your church being mission oriented.
This book was recommended to me by my Pastor and it helped me tremendously with a paper I am writing about the church.
A strong start and a few good ideas along the way, but overall way too theoretical and not helpful to any pastor or church leader.
Van Gelder has written an extremely important and profoundly insightful book about the church. He has an excellent understanding of North American Christianity and the cultural temptations which have shaped the current models for church. He lays out a foundation for the church as a christ-centered missional community. This book is rich in theology and philosophy and leads the reader to very practical conclusions about how we might "do church" differently. This is not a step-by-step method for the average church to apply to its existing programs. In fact it raises paradigm-shifting questions that speak to very foundational issues regarding the nature and purpose of the Body of Christ. It is a must read.
This book was a great read. I really enjoyed what was said and I think it is going to prove helpful in my ministry. The only complaint that I would have is that the author seems to skip around alot but that is only because the book covers alot of broad ground in 175 pages. However, the chapters on the Nature of the Church and the Ministry of the Church are worth the price of the book alone. All in all, this is a great book that everyone who wants to fulfill the Great Commission should read.

Bought the first Diary of a Minecraft Zombie book for my somewhat reluctant reader who LOVES Minecraft and I read it myself before giving it to him. (Yes, I'm an overly cautious mom.) BUT, I was pleasantly surprised - it was really cute! Not like "awww!" cute, but it was funny and well written, and it addresses typical kid/pre-teen issues without being over the top, but it does it from the perspective of a Zombie kid - mind you, not a flesh-eating, "Walking Dead," scare my kid so he won't sleep zombie, but one that's appropriate for kids his age (9 years when he began reading them).We both enjoyed them so much we've kept buying them and hope they continue coming out with new books! I've also tried a few other Minecraft theme books, and one series was just too "blah" and one that was a similar "diary of..." was okay, but this series just really is good.If you've got a younger kid who likes Minecraft - this is something worth checking out.
The book is really funny and all Mine craft lovers out there would love to hear about a Zombie life. We've all read Jeff Kinneys "Diary of a Wimpy kid" and readers everywhere love it. Now Mine craft fans can enjoy a "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" Mine craft style. Now, most people think "Hey the author just copied Jeff's Book and made it Mine craft!" But let's face it, this book can be enjoyable to anyone. Once again, Mine craft lovers can DEFINITELY enjoy a book like this I also recommend reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid for people who haven't read (but most of us did) . And read more Mine craft DOAWK (Diary of a wimpy kid) like diary of a wimpy VILLAGER. I've read it and it was good. Stuff like diarys of ocelot, wolf, enderman, or Angry Alex also should be nice to Mine craft lovers and DOAWK lovers so I really enjoy this book and I hope you will agree with me too.
My son and I absolutely love all of these books. They are hilarious! We read them together because they are just too good not to. I love that they are so perfect for my son's age (11) and talk about important issues in a funny way. You know, puberty, cheating on tests, treating your friends right, that stuff. The wait for the next book seems like forever!
My son is 8 and has been reading these books since he was 7. He loves them! It’s the only way I can get him interested in reading. It sometimes feels like as soon as one comes in the mail, he’s begging me to order the next one!
My son is in love with this series and is now on book 10. I am thankful to find a series of books that my 8 year old son loves and has not given me any trouble when I tell him it is time to read every day, as it is required by his teacher that they have to read at least 20 minutes each day.
My 8 yo son is not much of a reader but loves Minecraft. I was hoping that buying these books would get him more interested in reading and not so much of a fight when it comes to his 10 min reading that he has to do nightly for school. And this book has done the trick. My son will even ask to read a little longer sometimes because he is "at a good part." lol Would highly recommend for any young reader that likes Minecraft.
My 9-yr old says: This book is very interesting and exciting. It has good lessons about friendship and working together. It makes you think about who your true friends are.
My son loves these books. They got my reluctant reader to devour books.

I used this text for by undergrad business course on "Innovation for Sustainability."It provides great up-to-date descriptions of the key concepts and findings of sustainability issues, in straightforward and well-researched prose.I only taught 11 of the chapters, those that thought were more relevant for my business students. My students and I learned a lot from the book.There were a couple of minor typos in the text/images, but overall this is a valuable and high-quality text.
This book was for a class I took at University. The book was necessary reading. Although I do not agree with anthropogenic climate change, I appreciated the ease of reading (especially since it was required). This book goes into detail about sustainable ideas and practices that are in use and could be implemented.
I really love that how this book touches on multiple subjects related to sustainability and that each chapter has a clear topic. It has a textbook style to it, which is good because I actually feel like I am learning something.
