I showed this book to my gifted 4th graders and the boys who previously showed very little interest in reading immediately loved this book. They loved the dust jacket, then they took that off and loved the texture of the book cover (which is like the skin of a basketball). Thank you, Kwame Alexander, for these hooks before they even opened the book. Then they loved that it was poetry (fewer words per page..."I'm on page 32!"), and they loved the first page - maybe the best first page ever written for a boy reader.These kids were immediately sucked into the story. They loved the dynamics between the twin brothers, and the confidence of the narrator. They loved the father's pride in his son and that the father's language and taste was cheesy and dated.I can't thank the author enough for writing something that sounds so real, so relevant, so current, for boys who want to recognize themselves and their families on the page. It's not easy for an adult to write authentically for children using current language and icons that appeal to children. The boys in my group didn't know all of the basketball stars in the book - I needed to tell them who Magic Johnson was, for example - but they are a bit younger than the intended audience.
The Crossover, a Newbery Medal winner, is unusual; it’s children’s lit in the form of poetry, yet with a definite story line. It’s about a junior high school kid, Josh (a/k/a Filthy) and his parents and twin brother, Jordan (J.B.). The book centers around basketball; the twins are basketball stars, and their father was an NBA-caliber player who played briefly in Italy. Their mother is a vice principal.I'm not the intended audience for this book -- I don't particularly like basketball, I'm well past school age (by a lot), and I'm not really all that fond of poetry -- so I had reason to suspect that I might not like this book. However, I'm an omnivorous reader, and appreciate good writing of all sorts, and by the end I found that I enjoyed it a lot. I do think it’s a rather strange choice for the Newbery, although it is very creative. So it’s a very different book, but the story itself is universal. I’m glad I read it.
I read another book, IA: B.O.S.S., by a talented author, John Darryl Winston, that had some basketball content and middle-grade boy friendships that I really enjoyed. Therefore, when I came across The Crossover, it intrigued me. The talented author Kwame Alexander did not disappoint. The book contains a tight plot that encompasses family, friendship, love, health, and more. Kwame accomplishes a difficult and ambitious masterpiece by telling a story in short rhythmic verses. Kwame also does a great job capturing the essence of brotherhood between twins, Josh and Jordan Bell, mingled with the complicated dynamics of being in junior high (Jordan falls in love with Sweet Tea, and Josh wants a sip.). This is a great book for junior high kids and older. It's an easy read with a touching story. I also love the difficult vocabulary words that are introduced throughout the book.
Kwame Alexander's THE CROSSOVER (2014) is not a stereotypical basketball story. Rather, it is a universal story with educated, black characters of growing up, of family, and of love told in narrative verse (poetry). Having said that, Alexander does tackle some contemporary issues of black life: of driving while black, of the consequences for black men who do not regulate their temper, of poor diet and not seeking medical treatment. At its core, though, the story is about the love between twin brothers who think they are drifting apart as they go through puberty and the role that basketball plays in healing them through their obstacles. THE CROSSOVER is an engaging, emotional read that is ideal for those who love poetry, basketball, or may be reluctant readers.
As a former librarian, I wonder what books children and young adults will read and enjoy. As the mother of a 13-year-old, I wonder what books will pull him away from his computer games. I believe that The Crossover by Keane Alexander is such a book. It is full of action and contemporary references, as well as realistic family dynamics. The poetry filled the book with movement and song; it is almost as if it gave flesh to the book. I wish there were more books with male protagonists like this in this age group. I could not put this book down. I cannot wait to share it with my son.
I admit that I initially got this book because of two factors: one is that the author is a Virginia resident and the second is that the Kindle price was incredibly cheap, something that was likely done because the book won a Newbery Award. It's not a particularly long novel, but it's short length works in its favor because this is an exceedingly powerful book.The entire work is told in verse and it's beautifully done, as Alexander takes full advantage of the format to craft visually lovely free verse that truly leaps off the page. It's a book that's very much meant to be viewed, although part of me is curious to listen to the audiobook so I can experience how the narrator interpreted various portions of the book. What ultimately works best here is that the characters are all believable and best of all, there are no "bad guys" here. Even though we're really only given the perspective of one of the two brothers, it will be very easy for readers of all ages to interpret how either brother is feeling at almost any given point of the book- an element that I'm sure is going to be the focus of many, many school lectures.I can easily see this book becoming a staple of multiple classrooms and for good reason. It's amazingly well crafted and even better- it's fiction that will appeal to any age and any gender. This book deals with a lot of difficult topics, from growing up to family issues to various different things that just about every child will deal with when they're young and I whole heartedly recommend that parents read this book as well and discuss it with their children and heck, maybe even make up a few verses for themselves.

I am obviously in the minority on this book. It was just ok for me. I didn't feel a connection to this couple at all. They are apart more than together. So trying to build romance and passion would be hard.There is lovemaking, outside of marriage and very mild in description - rated 2.5 out of 5.We have no cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA and a short epilogue not far in the future. I can't improve on the blurb, just what you may expect reading it. (ljb)

They are curious about each other and more thanthat they are calling in Love 💘.Prudence used to be a maid but was given a cottage of her own.No longer does she have to serve others. She is free to do andbecome who or what she chooses.I was very very into this book! I couldn't out it down! I just hadto know what happens next! It's absolutely interesting,awesome and very well written! The author outdid herself!Thumbs upðŸ‘to her!I highly recommend that you get this book! You will not bedisappointed, I expect you will definitely enjoy it just like Idid.
I loved this well written, easy to read, action packed stand alone story! The characters are well developed and sound like people one would like to know. There is a ton of action in this book and it starts out grabbing you right away and keeps you turning the pages to see what is going to be happening next to either Alexander or Prudence, the 2 main characters. Prudence is a healer and had been given her own cottage and plot of land after have been a ladies maid. Alexander is an Earl, but also the Captain of a group of men fighting for the Jacobite cause. They meet right away when one of Alexander's men is injured and they happen upon Prudence's cottage, which is a huge blessing in disguise as she is able to save that soldier. Read for yourself the assorted adventures they live through after that! Plenty of action and drama and of course romance! A very enjoyable read!
I have been a fan of Emilia Ferguson’s Medieval Scottish Romances since I read her first book. She is a talented writer and pens wonderful romances. In “The Highlander’s Healer†she blends a unique plot with romance, action and suspenseful drama. Prudence, an English ladies maid turned property owner/healer and Lord Alexander Lachlann, a Scottish Earl fighting for the cause come together under unusual and challenging circumstances and with the backdrop of war begin to form a romantic relationship. Their journey is filled danger and misgivings on Prudence’s part because of her station in life but to paraphrase the last two lines of the epilogue “Our hearts were made for nothing else except to love.†How they achieved that love makes for a well written storyline with a lot of substance that I found a most enjoyable read and I highly recommend.
Alexander was an Scottish Earl fighting the English to put Stewart on the throne and all he has on his mind is to made sure that he does his part and he is commanding a ragtag team of men and one was hurt in a skirmish. Alexander meets Prudence the healer and she helps the soldier while Alexander is discovered by the English and they have to leave but he takes Prudence with them. Their lives become entangled as she begins to nurse the injured and he goes off to another Fort and ends up back with Prudence she nurses him back to health and they happen to over hear a plan to kill some of their soldiers and the game is on. This is a very interesting historical romantic suspense with action and intrigue. Great characters. I was given an Advanced Review Copy of this book without obligation. Prudence, who was a ladies maid, has been given her freedom, land, a cottage, and money to live on. She grows herbs and is a healer. A wounded man came to her cottage. She went to work cleaning his wound. Alexander Lachlann saw it was the wounded man he had been looking for. He decided to stay at the cottage until he could take the man and leave. When English soldiers were spotted the three of them left in a hurry. Thus begins the love story of Prudence and Alexander. Do they even have a chance? This story is full of action, danger, suspense, intrigue, uncertainty, mystery, and romance. Battles are fought. Lives are changed forever. A very well thought out plot and very well written. It's a book I didn't want to put down. I just had to know what happened next. Get a copy, you'll be glad you did!

As Christians, at some point in our faith walk, we all have likely struggled in some way with assurance of our salvation. Many Christians struggle with assurance in many ways. Some struggle with it because they do not feel saved. Others because they have a sin that they keep repeating after asking God for forgiveness and repenting from it. Still they are some that struggle with it after a sermon they heard from their pastor which promoted legalism rather than grace. Can a Christian know they are saved? How can we have assurance we are saved? This is what Greg Gilbert covers in his latest book, Assured. In this book, he gives our four sources of assurance based on the Word of God: The gospel of Jesus Christ. The promises of God. The witness of the Spirit. The fruit of obedience. The gospel is the message that God has saved sinners from their sin and has given them eternal life. In His Word, God has promised that the ones who are His will never be forgotten or let go despite out sins. The witness of the Spirit is God's Spirit testifying with our spirit that we are His children as taught in Romans 8. The fruit of obedience is our outward expression of our love for God as we seek to do what pleases Him. Jesus said the one who loves Him, is the one who obeys Him (John 14:21). At the end of book, Gilbert addresses besetting sins. Those are the sins that we seem to not get rid of no matter how mature we are in the faith. Gilbert tells his readers while it is discouraging that these sins are still within us, we must not lose heart. This is not an indication that we have lost our salvation. Jesus promised that no one, not even ourselves, can snatch us from the Father's hand. Finally, Christians should always strive for assurance. The way to do that is to be constantly reminded of the promises of God in the gospel. We must also do the things that please God and not walk in this journey alone, which means Christians are to be faithful church members. Get together with a family believers that will walk with you and you walk with them in our journey to be more like Jesus. Greg Gilbert has been one of my favorite writers for some time. I have enjoyed every book he has written and Assured is no exception. The book is short and easy to read that will be a great tool to go through a fellow believer who is struggling with assurance of their salvation. This is will also be good for you if you are struggling with assurance as well.
How do I know that I am saved? Should I question or even doubt my salvation? What do I do with my own fears about my salvation? Questions like these and others are what Greg Gilbert answers in a helpful and winsome way in his latest book, Assured.What I enjoyed most about this work is Gilbert’s constant, clear focus on the gospel of the Lord Jesus. Unlike many authors who drive people only to check for good works to find salvation, Gilbert urges readers to focus strongly on the gospel first. The first question that a doubting person should ask is whether or not they believe the truth of the gospel. Do you believe in Christ? Do you know of your own sin? Do you believe that Jesus died to pay for your sin and rose again? Do you desire to surrender your life to Jesus in faith? Such questions are more important than other measures that often leave us doubting.Gilbert is not at all promoting an easy believism in this work. On the contrary, he is quite clear that genuinely saved people will have lives that show that genuine faith. The point that Gilbert is strongly making, however, is that our focus should be far more on Christ than on self as we seek to be able to rest in God’s grace.In this work, Gilbert will deal with the issue of assurance from a variety of angles. Gospel is first and foremost, but the author does not ignore the witness of the Spirit, good works, or the promises of God. He also addresses several mistakes that people often make that make assurance more difficult. Gilbert does not ignore the big problem of besetting sins but deals with the concept in a biblical and pastoral way.I read through this book quite quickly, and I found it both helpful and enjoyable. This would be a great book to work through with a friend who is struggling with assurance, or even for you to read if you have your own doubts. It also might be a helpful tool for a short Sunday School series or home study.Note: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for agreeing to post an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I have an individual in my congregation that struggles with this very topic. I decided to read this book in hopes that I would be more equipped to walk with him through this season of life. The arguments that this man is using are the exact arguments that Greg Gilbert answers in this book. I am excited to be able to share with him this book and go through it together. As I was reading I was filled with joy at the beauty of the gospel that the author displayed. My eyes were constantly cast onto the majesty of our savior. If you are struggling with assurance, I would encourage you to buy this book. If you are a pastor, I would also encourage you to buy/read this book for your congregation. It's a must buy, for sure.
Greg's book is encouraging and it's a great book to give to anyone who worries about their salvation. Greg's writing is solid and every point he makes is backed up with Scripture. I highly recommend it.

This is a space mission to find a known but unknown alien race called the Volcryn. They are known on paper and mouth to mouth folklore only. No one in present memory has ever seen one or it’s starships. The Volcryn are only superstition and legends. Some ancient races think they may have been or are still God or Gods. The whole team is put into place to search for, and find these aliens and make first contact. The interaction between the crew is interesting, but the interaction with the crew and the captain of the Nightflyers is fascinating and bizarre. The captain is a very strange and arrogant person. The 5 women, 4 men crews jobs, background and personality traits seem to be lacking due to the fact no one knew each other before this mission. They are learning and making it up as they go along. There is however some major problems on this ship, someone or something is killing the crew. The paranoia, fear and anger builds within the crew. There are some great twists and turns. This is a fast and good read, I enjoyed it.
George R. R. Martin had this idea that science fiction should have its horror classics. First off, science fiction does have its classic horror representatives. Remember Frankenstein? But moreover, any genre can support horror. Think of the great horror stories in classic literature - Turn of the Screw, for one. The horror initiates in the personalities of the characters. So, in addition to having a good, strong plot you have to have well developed characters. This isn't the case here. The characters act inappropriately (engaging in light banter after horrific events, for example) and their dialogue is unconvincing. One of the main characters (d'Branin,the brain), included the phrase "my friend" at least once in every sentence he spoke - kind of maddening after a while. So all in all, it wasn't very effective in getting any synergy between the two genres.
I was familiar with Martin's work because of the HBO series based on his acclaimed fantasy saga 'A Song of Ice and Fire' so I knew that there would be twists and turns. However, these aren't what you'd expect. Written in a more direct and simpler style than ASOIAF, 'Nightflyers' isn't packed with vivid descriptions of the dark entities haunting our characters. And that's good because otherwise, it would spoil the surprise. That being said, fans of cosmic horror and mystery will enjoy this book and the madness experiences by each character as they come to a realization that (like in many Lovecraftian tales) is too much for them to bear.The story plays out like a haunted house in space. While not being as long as his other stories, Martin have us multifaceted characters that we can like and dislike at times.This is also a cautionary tale where we are reminded of humanity's inner demons, and how sometimes it is not aliens we should be wary of.
Not at all what I was expecting, but very good nonetheless. It kept me guessing all the way throughout. I even stayed up until I only had an hour until it was time to get up for work reading.
This is a solid collection of 1970's science fiction from George R. R. Martin. I found all the stories enjoyable, especially the title novella.Nightflyers--A group of scientists are tracking the oldest known alien vessel through deep space. When they begin to die one by one, they blame their enigmatic captain. This is an outstanding character-driven piece with strong science fiction and horror elements. (It was made into a forgettable 1980's movie, then again into an even more forgettable cable television series in 2018.)Override--In the far future, a miner controls a team of animated corpses to dig for valuable swirlstones. However, when a business rival uses an override device to usurp his control, his day at the office takes a turn for the worse--he must fend off a zombie attack. This is one of three corpse handler stories the author wrote. This one had a strong premise, but the idea would not reach its full potential until "Meathouse Man".Weekend in a War Zone--This story posits a near future where people pay to fight in wars on the weekend. It's all fun and games, but the bullets and the deaths are real. This is a decent entertainment but feels slightly derivative."And Seven Times Never Kill Man"--An excellent portrait of two cultures at war with one another. One is a group of humanoid settlers who follow a militaristic form of Christianity warped by centuries of intergalactic conflict. The other is a primitive tribe that exalts art and pacifism. The author purposefully leaves many questions unanswered, but this story defies the easy answers and still has enough meat on the bone to satisfy.Nor the Many-Colored Fires of a Star Ring--Kerin and Jenny are researchers on a star ring, a ship whose purpose is to temporarily open a wormhole to allow colony ships to pass through. The Black Door station opens onto an uncharted vacuum that is an enigma to science. Perhaps they are on the far side of the universe where the light of the Big Bang has not yet reached. Perhaps they have been flung into the far past, pre-creation, or the far future after the universe has collapsed onto itself. They are experimenting to create a sustaining wormhole, but when they lose control of the energy within the vortex, they might just initiate a new act of creation--or destruction--with unpredictable consequences. This is a philosophical story full of grandiose ideas, part of the author's early Thousand Worlds series.A Song for Lya -- Two psychics travel to an world much older than earth to investigate why humans are being drawn towards an alien religion that always culminates in suicide. This is a strong story, with an outstanding premise built around two questions: "What is true love?" and "Does human individuality create an inherent sense of isolation?" My only complaint is that it drags on a bit too long with too much repetition. Won a 1974 Hugo Award.

Ray comes across someone down on their luck one night and takes her to ER to be checked out. Sylvia is actually a doctor whose brand new ex just left her, without ID, money or extra clothing. This story has the suspense element and starts up pretty quickly. Much of the story is between these two, and her getting over her brother’s death years ago, or the guilt thereof and the suspense angle of who could be after her. We get to see the other Macalister siblings and spouses in this one too, though a minor part. Easy to get into and keep the pages turning.
Ray rescues Sylvia thinking shes a drunk rather than a women who slipped in puddle of beer and was stranded by her ex boyfriend . Sylvia carries immense guilt for her brother's death and can' t believe someone as wonderful as Ray wants her. Alexa weaves a love story filled with our need to rely on the Lord and accept His forgiveness and trust He will guide us if we listen. Can't wait for Elizabeth's story.
After reading the first 2 books in the series, I couldn't wait for this one to come out. It was incredible! I am not normally a big fan of suspense, but I do like how Alexa handles it in her stories.
All the books in this series were wonderful. After the first one on Melinda, I had to read the others and I must admit that the books were all interesting. I wish they were longer though with a little more suspense.
A great book that kept me wondering what was coming next. DR. Sylvia Barron was stranded at a gas stop by her boyfriend and she doesn't have her purse or clothing. Then she falls in front of store and gets hurt plus lands in beer.Ray Macalister a nurse that was there came to her rescue and took her to the hospital. He took her back to his place because she had no where to go. His sisters who was in the last two books were not happy. They didn't trust her because of the way she looked.The story goes on with them becoming friends and Sylvia opening up to Ray about her past which she hasn't done before to anyone. Mean while someone is out to hurt her. Sylvia is sad about her past and trying to work through it an Ray is trying to help her. Showing that there is a person who cares and helping her to get back to trusting God and seeing He was with her all along.It gets very interesting when they keep seeing a black car and she gets threats on her life. I am not going to tell you more for I don't want to tell the wonderful story. All I can say is only always trust in God.Enjoy your read for this is a wonderful book.
Alexa Verde’s book Seasons Of Amor:Ray is a amazing man who is always helping people in need. When he leaves the gas station he is shocked to see the lady on the ground moaning. Sylvia can’t believe that Kent would just take off and leave her stranded. When she falls in a muddy pool of beer she can’t get up. Sylvia can’t believe the way Ray just picks her up out of the mud to help her. The characters in this book are all very special people who feel like your family. You won’t be able to stop reading this book. This book is truly a wonderful inspirational story. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.
Both elements combine in this story of God's amazing gift of second chances. I have enjoyed reading the continuing saga of the four Macalisters as each finds their forever love. I can't wait for Elizabeth's story! Did we get a hint that it might be the P.I.?
Faith filled suspense story by a super author. Great addition to the series. The meeting of Sylvia and Ray was a surprise, but sure works for this story. Clean and spiritual. Highly recommend. I received a copy from the author. Opinions are my own.
