I loved this so much I immediately, out at dinner with friends, got on my phone and ordered the next two volumes. Give this a read for sure!
I'm generally more into shojo than shonen manga, but I really enjoyed Again!!. I could relate to Kinichiro's feelings of being left out in high school, and of wishing he'd done more with his time there. One thing I like about this manga is how it shows that a lot of people don't exactly what they want out of their time in high school; there's one scene in particular, where kids are talking about their hopes for the next three years, but Kinichiro, who's come from the future, knows how disappointed they're going to be. He's not the only one who travels in time-- a girl, Aki, comes, too, although she seems to be having an opposite experience; instead of improving her social life the second time around, she finds herself messing up her relationships and becoming ostracized from her boyfriend and former friends. In fact, all three of the main characters are outsiders in some way. Yoshiko, the captain of the ouendan, doesn't fit in because she's intense, passionate, and over the top, insisting on tough regimens and outdated formalities. Also, she's loud, very loud. I like how Kinichiro's relationship with her, his desire to help her, shows how someone can make an impression on you in just one meeting. I believed that he didn't actually like her to begin with, and found his actual reason for wanting to help her believable and relatable. Their relationship is probably the best part of the manga. It's interesting, because, while Yoshiko is the ouenden captain and technically older than Kinichiro, he's mentally older and more mature than her. This leads to some really funny conflict, as she does not respond well to his blunt advice. The only real complaint I have about Again!! is some "Mean Girls" type drama that the cheer squad perpetrates on the ouendan club; it's kind of cliche and portrays girls as manipulative. Still, most of the girls characters do not conform to stereotypical notions of femininity, and there is at least a passing effort to show why girls might do such things. Overall, I enjoyed the characters and comedy in this manga a lot.
After the worldwide, whirlwind success of Yuri on Ice, Kodansha USA editor Ben Applegate has finally had an opportunity to publish one of co-creator Mitsurou Kubo’s earlier works, Again!!. Again!! begins with a premise that is slightly reminiscent of another of Kodansha’s titles, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches (or Yen Press’s title Erased), where third-year “delinquent†Kinichiro Imamura is about to graduate high school and frankly he’s rather glad to be done. His introverted personality, appearance, and status as the “new kid†led to people labeling him as rebellious as soon as he started high school and he was never able to shake the label.But on his very last day Imamura finds himself reminiscing about a club he saw on his very first day of school, the ouendan cheering club, and when he and another student startle each other outside of the old clubroom they panic, trip, fall down the stairs, and now both of them seem to be doing high school all over again.It’s a bit of a worrisome start for the story. Imamura and the other student (fellow third-year Akira Fujieda) are last seen in the “present†lying prone on the floor in a pool of blood, but the rest of the story so far doesn’t seem to dwell on that grim imagery. So far it’s a fairly light-hearted story despite some more serious subplots boiling beneath. Imamura and Fujieda are having very different high school “do-overs†but essentially for the same reason: neither of them are the same person they were when they started high school three years earlier. Fujieda is in a rush to get things back to the “status quo,†such as convincing her soon-to-be-boyfriend to break-up with his current/â€ex†girlfriend sooner, and Fujieda doesn’t realize how rude she comes off. Imamura, on the other hand, is now more sure of himself and the other people around him since he’s done this all before. He now knows what to say to the teachers to keep them from hassling him, doesn’t care as much if his new classmates find him odd, and ironically enough he comes off as more mellow and easier to approach and Imamura is netting himself far more friends than he had before.But the most pressing question remains: what is going on with the ouendan? Imamura remembers that they were disbanded by his second year and discovers that the year before (before Imamura moved to the area) the ouendan had a much more robust membership and not all of those club members graduated. Did the unrelenting personality of the captain, Yoshiko Usami, drive them out? Did the cheerleading club, a club that competes with the ouendan for the same spotlight, have something to do with it? Considering that Usami seems to piss off everyone and the cheerleading captain sends a honeypot after Imamura to try and keep him from joining ouendan both of these theories seem pretty likely! But as the volume ends it seems like there were even more factors at play, although what they were we’ll have to wait to find out.Volume 1 of Again!! is a strong, smart start to a new series with believable high school drama and likable, nuanced characters throughout. I was particularly surprised at how fleshed out the “honeypot†cheerleader, Reo Shibata, was. She and all of the other major side characters already have clear personalities, motives, and the readers have a real sense of how any two characters would interact with each other, even if they haven’t met yet. Honestly, Kubo just makes it look too easy, like anyone can effortlessly set-up multiple dramas and flesh out almost half a dozen characters in a single volume! I’m not entirely sure how this drama will continue to sustain itself for eleven more volumes, but I’m along for the ride and ready to find out!- Helen
'Again!!' by Mitsurou Kubo is a manga about school life. Usually these leave me uninterested, but this one had a unique twist.It's Kinichiro's last day of school. He is an outcast who made it through school with no friends. He intends to graduate and get on with his life. Then a freak accident happens and he finds himself starting over as a freshman. This time, he knows what will happen. Will he do the same things or try to be more involved in the lives around him this time.I really liked this story, and I especially liked the art. The story was unusual enough and even though I didn't know what Ouendan was, the story idea was so compelling that it pulled me along. I really liked this unusual high school story told in manga.I received a review copy of this manga from Kodansha Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.

I'm drawn to wounded heroes. Simon was badly traumatized as a prisoner of war.Jenny's reaction seemed awfully naive to me, and his transformation is miraculously fast. But he still tries to kill her in his sleep, and she keeps insisting on sleeping with him. I was about to write the whole thing off as unrealistic until he sees a doctor who seems to make sense.I kept thinking "This would never happen" in other places throughout the book. It's hard to pinpoint why; it either didn't seem natural or appropriate for the times, even though the author keeps pointing out that the heroine is disregarding society norms.I almost stopped reading when I was more than halfway through because it is so darn long! I suggest writing out Ned altogether. Even with the length, there are loose ends. For example, does no one react when Simon cuts off the money? Does no one pursue Master Cheeseface?But the bottom line is I kept reading to see what happened next and who was stealing money from the estate and so on, so yes, I did like it.
Devastated by the death of his cousin and the guilt of not saving him, Lord Simon Devere is drinking the pain and his life away. Masquerading as Mr. Cavendish, Jenny Blackwood accepts the assignment of auditing the estate’s books. After a very intriguing first meeting, the two begin a tentative friendship. As their admiration for each other grows, the mystery of exacting who is stealing from the estate gives them a quest and a chance to change their friendship to more. This book has some very deep, insightful moments when dealing with Simon’s guilt, but, the love and acceptance of a very good woman certainly assists in his recovery.
Got more than my 99 cents worth from this story, my first by Sydney Jane Baily. Simon and Jenny were very likable. Simon survived being a POW only to be mentally tormented while awake and asleep. In comes Jenny, who's a bit of a Pollyanna, to work on the estate books and what a household of caring people couldn't do, she did... got him out of the dark. Quickly. Too quickly, it seemed. He had violent nightmares and tried to strangle Jenny a couple of times. He sought help though because this time it wasn't so quick to resolve. There were multiple things going on in the background that seemed to fill a bit of a relationship hole. There was quite a bit of sex, for those who like to know about that. I liked this author's style and will likely read another.

This story is PTSD at its worst and the struggles of getting back to everyday life. After her father dies her fiancé the viscount calls off his engagement. Jennie Blackwood becomes destitute young lady with the family needing help financially she enters Simon’s life and slowly changes his life. Jennie is tasks with auditing the Earl’s financial ledgers. She seems to be the only one able to help him, reach as no one self has while visiting him to sort his finances. A sad and captivating story of a man struggling to get his life back and one woman not willing to give up on him and helps him out of the darkness into the light to a better future. This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
A captivating tale of a tortured war hero who suffered capture and torture as a prisoner of war. After returning home, Lord Devere is suffering terrible nightmares, PTSD and guilt. His savior comes In the form of Jenny, a bookkeeper whose family is left in dire straights after the death of her father. This is as unlikely a pairing as imaginable, but the chemistry between them can be felt from the start. I found the characters very well developed and compelling. It was easy to become emotionally involved right away and I couldn’t put this book down. It is a beautifully told story of pain, loss and the power of love. However, I did appreciate that love was not enough to solve all. I am eager to read more from this author.
This was a new author for me. But the book didn’t disappoint me at all. A very troubled Lord, gets help from his bookkeeper, to try to control his dreams, flashbacks of his time in war. Added to the mix, funds have been disappearing from his coffers. Together they solve both problems. I really enjoyed Jenny’s take charge character. I recommend this book to everyone.
This is my first book by this author and I will definitely be looking for more from her. The romance happened rather quickly between Jenny and Simon but I found Simon's problems to be depicted realistically and my heart just went out to him for all he had suffered. I like that the author didn't solve all Simon's problems just because Jenny came into his life though she was a major reason for his recovery. The mystery of the missing funds kept me interested and I thought it very interesting. Highly recommend.
Four stars...Simon had some mental baggage, saved only by his bookkeeper Jenny..She help redeem most of his mental capabilities..But he still had to walk alone to be whole..Good book, good storyline..Good ending.

Sarah Arvio's Night Thoughts is like no other book of poetry or of self-analysis/reflections on analysis. As I finished reading it, I could think only of Hilda Doolittle's Tribute to Freud as a point of comparison. With all her admiration for Freud, who was her analyst in 1933-34, H.D. states that "the Professor" might have been right in his judgments, but "my form of rightness, my intuition, sometimes functioned by the split-second (that makes all the difference in the spiritual time computations) the quicker. I was swifter in some intuitive instances, and sometimes a small tendril of a root from that great common Tree of Knowledge went deeper into the sub-soil. His were the great giant roots of that tree, but mine, with hair-like almost invisible feelers, sometimes quivered a warning or resolved a problem..." (pp. 98-99).I remembered this passage from Tribute to Freud because Arvio's notes on the figures of her own dreams seem to be sustained by a similar kind of "hair-like almost invisible feelers" that a mature poet grows in the process of self-understanding. The disturbing dreams caused distress, no doubt, but they were also compelling experiences. "If my mind can create such intricate and beautiful thoughts, I said to myself," Arvio writes, "I might be worth saving. I noticed that the dreaming mind was poetic, or moved like a poem, through suggestion and disguise" (Note on "Jade Rings, Snakes, Snakeplants, Green Snakes").Arvio's previous books, Visits from the Seventh and Sono, contain many poems that "behave like dreams," which most poetry does, at least to some extent. By contrast, Night Thoughts courageously invites the reader to experience the raw material of poetry (well, not entirely raw - distilled) - an invitation that should appeal to both readers and writers of fiction as well as to anyone interested in artistic creativity and creativity in general. The excerpts above are representative of the book's enticing world. I'd like to add just one more quote - the last lines of the last sonnet in the book, "end." Very easy to follow piece by piece instructions for making several models of transport. Could be more models if they didn't make copies of the same models just in different colors. My 5 year old grandson loves the book and finds it fairly easy to follow with just a little guidance.Will probably be purchasing some of the other books in the series.
I bought this for my 4 1/2 yr old great-grandson. We like to build things together. The directions are easy to follow- I sometimes have to help him identify a piece but generally he can find it on his own. The directions show the color of the piece and where to place it as you're constructing. We love the book and are checking out some of the others in the "Build-It" set.
Great book for little builders that are just getting into following build instructions.

Recently I read Lies Women Believe-And the Truth that Sets them Free by Nancy Leigh DeMoss for my ladies bible study. In it she tackles 40 Lies women believe about themselves, sin, God, marriage, children and others.Let me start off by saying this book has some sound advice, but for me those things are overshadowed by what I would call her more "legalistic" views.Despite her comparing Eve's sin to overeating (page 56) and suggesting that this was her sin I thought the book started off well. Then she begins to speak and give her opinion on things that I thought were a little over the top. In one place it seemed as though she was telling the women that if they don't always look their best it's their fault if their husband's eyes wander or if he cheats. In another it sounded like she was saying women should be willing to have many children or risk their salvation, and in another she basically said women should stay in an abusive marriage and wait for God to change their husbands.Here are some of the quotes from the book that gave me some concern-Page 80: If a wife dresses in a way that is slovenly and unkempt, if she does not take any care for her physical appearance, she reflects negatively on her husband (and on her heavenly Bridegroom). Further, if she makes no effort to be physically attractive for her husband, you may be sure another woman out there will be standing in line to get his attention.Page 171 - In the Apostle Paul's first epistle to Timothy, we are reminded that childbearing is a basic, God-given role for women. Paul exhorts younger widows to "marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give them enemy no opportunity for slander" (1 Timothy 5:14). In the last verse of chapter, 2, he states, "women will be saved through childbearing - if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety." Likewise, a woman's willingness to embrace, rather than shun, her God-given role and calling (childbearing) is a necessary fruit that will accompany genuine salvation - it is proof that she belongs to Him and follows His ways. Page 149 - There are extreme situations where an obedient wife may need to remove herself and /or children from proximity to her husband if the remain in that setting would be to place themselves in physical danger. However, even in such a case, a woman can - and must - maintain an attitude of reverence for her husband's position; her goal is not to belittle or resist him as her husband but, ultimately, to see God restore him to obedience. If she provokes or worsens the situation through her attitudes, words, or behavior, she will interfere with what God wants to do in her husband's life and will not be free to claim God's protection and intervention on her behalf. Given her references to her past about not having Barbie dolls and growing up with little to no exposure to the world around her I can see why she would have some of the views she does. Which is probably why she suggests we limit our children's access to certain media, and that part of our children's problem is that they know more about the world than they do about Jesus.I can agree with her on this point, many of our youth know more about the latest boy band, fads or movies then they know about Jesus and the gospel. It's so important for us to teach them to ways of God, to pray, read the His Word and to always seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit.But what I can't necessarily agree with is the "lie" she uses on page 182 that says "We are not responsible for how our children turn out."Even though my parents didn't take me and my siblings to church very often I can't blame them for the things I've done. I spent many years in the Mormon cult worshiping a false god, and believing I was bound for heaven when I was on my way to hell. Was this their fault or mine?Yes, I believe it's up to us to teach our children the gospel and about Jesus Christ, but at some point it's up to them to accept or reject what we've taught. And at some point it's up to the individual to put on their big girl or boy pants and accept some of the responsibility for their sinful behavior. It's way too easy to put the blame squarely on their parents.As I conclude my review I want to reiterate that while I did find some valuable advice and insight in the book I also found myself feeling more discouraged than encouraged as I read it. I suggest that when you read her book take everything she says with a grain of salt even though you may feel like throwing the book against the wall or tossing it into the recycle bin like I did. And always pray and compare what she says to the Word of God.Thank you for reading this review. :)
Read this book as part of a bible study so not my choice, felt this book was more fire and brimstone (rules and regulations) as opposed to God's Love and Mercy.
Every young lady and woman should read this!! It would prevent so many hours, days, and maybe years from being wasted by wrong thinking and consequential wrong actions. "As a man [woman] thinks, so is he." The world can lead us astray if we allow our thinking to be led by it. Nancy Lee DeMoss Wolgemuth uses the Word of God to guide us back to wisdom.
The first part was ok, then it kinda gets judgemental and critical. I did a book study on it and it just gets worse. Some of chapters are very idealistic and no grace. I find it hard to take advice on marriage and children from someone whos never been there. Are you kidding me??? I can’t even...I literally had moments while reading it I was thinking: “now how do I teach this in a more grace filled way?â€Oh the “depression†lie...oh my goodness, wanted to throw the book in the trash....
Couldn't finish it. Just way too strongly stating things that I don't think Scripture gives firm teachings on, and coming from someone who at the time was netiher married nor a mother, the parts on marriage and motherhood (and strong ideas too) broke my interest in the rest of it.
Thoroughly based on the Word of God. DeMoss tackles the lies about women that have grown in our culture over the past half century and shows that the Great Deceiver is behind all of them.

I thought this was going to be more like a travel guide, I was pretty disappointed when I opened it up and it wasn't too user friendly.
a unique look at how our state has changed
If you like Nebraska history and like to travel, this is fantastic. If follows highway routes in all directions across the state with a brief overview of each city and town as they are encountered. All written from a late 30's perspective. Some of the towns and original highways no longer exist, but it is great to explore the state with this guide. My copy is a 1979 printing, dog eared and torn from use. Looking for a fresh copy.
