Review

Praise for Sarah Arvio's Night Thoughts from The Washington Independent Review of Books"Who does not love the nighttime mind with its full disclosure, lack of censor—metaphor, innuendo, enchantment, intensity? Sarah Arvio breaks the codes through psychoanalysis and coverts her thoughts to poems. This is a book of mutual discovery for the poet and reader, and most fascinating are the notes which untangle the unapparent worlds. Among the many successes here is that Arvio is too busy puzzling out psyche and prosody to think about moving to sensationalism—but sensational they are—all our horror stories of guilt and shame—memories that changed shape early on. This book is influential because it is one of a kind. With all the books written today, one so unique with such an alternate view of poetry is almost a game changer in the field. There are 70 set pieces of exactly 14 lines. We know how important consistency is to hold tumult. Discipline is essential—and well done, it becomes admirable. Never have symbols had so many faces, but what I like is there are no overt moral questions which would stain the search, and Arvio’s lack of punctuation alludes to this. These are works of strong feelings ringed by messages saying we can’t control our dreams but we can control the poem. From the uncomfortable silence of the psyche’s tundra, Arvio wrings out her truth."three fishthe mother of the boy I will marryshe takes the knife & she turns it overon the cutting board beside the white fishlaying potato peels over the fisheach white fish is striped with one red stripethe red stripe marring its delicate fleshmy white dress is spattered with bright pink bloodall the white lace is spattered with my bloodshe hides the three fish from the wedding guestscovering them up with potato peelsshe’s hiding the fish from their fish shameshe doesn’t hide me I can’t hide myselfshe hides the three fish so no one can see covering them up with potato peels

Sarah Arvio's Night Thoughts is like no other book of poetry or of self-analysis/reflections on analysis. As I finished reading it, I could think only of Hilda Doolittle's Tribute to Freud as a point of comparison. With all her admiration for Freud, who was her analyst in 1933-34, H.D. states that "the Professor" might have been right in his judgments, but "my form of rightness, my intuition, sometimes functioned by the split-second (that makes all the difference in the spiritual time computations) the quicker. I was swifter in some intuitive instances, and sometimes a small tendril of a root from that great common Tree of Knowledge went deeper into the sub-soil. His were the great giant roots of that tree, but mine, with hair-like almost invisible feelers, sometimes quivered a warning or resolved a problem..." (pp. 98-99).I remembered this passage from Tribute to Freud because Arvio's notes on the figures of her own dreams seem to be sustained by a similar kind of "hair-like almost invisible feelers" that a mature poet grows in the process of self-understanding. Mature artists may come to see their own lives as material for their art. Tellingly, Arvio reflects on the dreams' poetic descriptions fitted within the constraints of the sonnet form. The 70 poems, almost all of which are describing particular dreams, could be published without the elaborate Notes. The Notes, however, depend on the poems. Thus the special power of this book seems to be in its validation of artists' suffering as the substance of their art. The disturbing dreams caused distress, no doubt, but they were also compelling experiences. "If my mind can create such intricate and beautiful thoughts, I said to myself," Arvio writes, "I might be worth saving. I noticed that the dreaming mind was poetic, or moved like a poem, through suggestion and disguise" (Note on "Jade Rings, Snakes, Snakeplants, Green Snakes").Arvio's previous books, Visits from the Seventh and Sono, contain many poems that "behave like dreams," which most poetry does, at least to some extent. By contrast, Night Thoughts courageously invites the reader to experience the raw material of poetry (well, not entirely raw - distilled) - an invitation that should appeal to both readers and writers of fiction as well as to anyone interested in artistic creativity and creativity in general. The excerpts above are representative of the book's enticing world. I'd like to add just one more quote - the last lines of the last sonnet in the book, "end." This sonnet seems to talk to the closure of the longest dream poem in the Western culture, Dante's Divine Comedy:Arvio:the end of love I think is to be lovedor to love someone else who must be lovedthat is bottomland to the bottomlifea place to lie down & a place to kissDante:Here vigor failed and lofty fantasy:But now was turning my desire and will,Even as a wheel that equally is moved,The Love which moves the sun and the other stars. (Tr. by H. W. Longfellow)

Sara Arvio's latest and much anticipated book of poems is a must read for anyone interested in the interstices where poetry and psychoanalysis meet.
