Buy it and save it. Great info. More concise than most med surg books used. This is the book that tells you what to do when shit goes wrong. Very detailed, but in a practical “I’m here to save lives†mentality. This is advanced compared to your med surg class. Instead if one chapter in your med surg book this is a whole book on it.This will help you be more competent in detecting when your patient is taking the turn for the worse if you work on med surg. Likely your patient will transfer to ICU, but perhaps not if you piece together the s/s soon enough.
Has been a very helpful textbook for me as someone who was previously a biology major before I went into nursing. Although I have only really thoroughly covered the first 10 chapters, I already appreciate its method of using more scientific terminology for laying the foundation of each chapter's concepts. Lists many helpful article references in each chapter and appears to have very few editing errors unlike other nursing textbooks I have read through. Good foundations textbook for ICU nursing concepts. Has really opened my eyes to concepts of pain control, sedation, and understanding the patient's perspective on their ICU stay. Thanks!

I rented this book on Amazon for a class. I loved it so much I turned around and bought it. I still use this book often. It is easy to read and understand, yet thoroughly extensive and in depth. This was my favorite book for all of nursing school. I wish I started my first semester with this book. It will definitely stay with me for the rest of my career.

My toddler is a diehard trucks, trains, cars kid.This seemed to be a good “gateway†book to something else (baking). Well, it didn’t work.But he loves it, and for that, it’s worth it.He likes naming the different construction machines (mixer, bulldozer, crane, pumping truck, loader, etc.) He also likes “reading†the sound effects which are written in big letters across some of the pages. He tells me which letters he sees and we sound out the noises together (“BRRRRRRR...†“CRRRRRRACK,†etc.)It’s an adorable, imaginative story with so many opportunities to learn and share with your kiddo. I particularly enjoy looking at every one of the little workers who are drawn simply but individually on each page—almost as if they have their own little story.I have never seen this book anywhere so it’ll be a hit at show and tell some day, I’m sure!
My 3 year old son is REALLY into tractors right now and REALLY into cake. So I saw this on Amazon and thought this would be a perfect birthday gift for his 3 year birthday party (as it was construction themed). He loves the book, it's about a bunch of tractors/trucks mixing and baking a cake. The illustrations are fun, but the book is sorely lacking on words. Some nights, though, that's a good thing if I don't feel like reading a long book to him before bed.One neat little thing about the book is that just about every page, there is a little guy who has fallen down on the ground. It's kind of like a "Where's Waldo" game. We find the "oopsy" guy who fell down. We still can't find him on one page, but we'll keep looking!
Let me say that the art in this book is fantastic. I had originally picked this book up at the library and my almost 5 year old son LOVED IT. we had tokeep the book checked out for a month.THis book is a real boy's book, one where a little boy can get lost in the fantasy of the images. There are not a lot of wrds. Basically its an imaginary world where this little little people, may be an 1" high make a cake for us regular sized folks. So they use minature equipment to handle life sized eggs butter and equipment.My son just loves to look at this book with me and sometimes I'llread the words, add my own story, or we'll discuss it or he'll tell me. Book has detailed illustrations of various construction vehicles...that may help to learn how to draw these vehicles as well. Construction vehicles have various attachments I did not even know exist...this book couples well with "Digger" from series Machines at Work, you'll find real photographs of many of the diggers depicted in "Who made the cake" in "Digger".[...]

Our daughter, Kelly Vella won the television reality show, Forged in Fire. I gave her this book and she loves it! Here are a few of her knives. The horse head sword is her remake of the sword that she won with. The show kept her original. Good for anyone who wants to be better.
This book has a lot of great info but it feels very old. The info is still valid and I learned a lot from it.
Great Book. There is a lot of information in this book that is a "must need" to know about working steel/iron for knife/sword making. I would suggest this book along with the videos of "how to" to get a more thorough understanding of forge working and working with steel.
Great read, but seems more like an intermediate level read at times. That said, I'm still building my first smithy and have yet to swing a hammer on hot steel. I would definitely recommend this to any level, neophyte to well, someone with more skill than I. Lots of pearls inside.
If you are new to bladesmithing, this is the go-to book for beginners. It has enough information on every aspect of bladesmithing to get you thru your first blades. However, I would recommend starting with a book on basic blacksmithing. (A Blacksmithing Primer is a good book that will get you acquainted with how hot steel molds under the hammer.) This book is very informative, well organized and instructive.The steel guide in the back are great. If you are interested in forging knives or knife making in general this is one book that should be in your workshop.It covers everything from setting up the workshop, the forging process and sheath making. The book is interesting because it focuses to some extent on making swords of the western medieval style so would also be of interest to historical rein actors.It was an expensive book in it's hardcover option but beautifully produced. Now that it's available as a softback or electronically there's no excuse for you not to own it!
very much liked this book. It is informative without being boring or overly complex. There are a fair number of pictures and drawings. You can never have to many pictures. I think it is a good starting foundation for smithing. I would recommend it.

About the Author
HENRY FOUNTAIN has been a reporter and editor at the New York Times for two decades, writing about science for most of that time. From 1999 to 2009 he wrote "Observatory," a weekly column in the Science Times section. He was an editor on the national news desk and the Sunday Review and was one of the first editors of Circuits, the Times' pioneering technology section. Prior to coming to the Times, Fountain worked at the International Herald Tribune in Paris, New York Newsday, and the Bridgeport Post in Connecticut. I am an old geologist and I worked in Alaska in 1961. Most of this work was in Anchorage, but we also ran a gravity survey along all existing roads and around the city. We used a base station a Elmendorf and city engineering data to establish the basis for our survey. When a big plane took off or landed at the airport, the gravity meter would not settle down for hours. There were many earthquakes during that year and I shared accommodation with other workers from our company down the hill from 4th street. We would be awakened by the shaking and the rattling of the coat hangers in the closet. Thus, the Good Friday earthquake came as no surprise and living and working in Los Angeles area at the time of the quake, it did not lead to much more than normal geological curiosity. My university training had introduced to me to some of the ongoing studies that would later confirm the ideas about plate tectonics. My knowledge of plate tectonics has increased with the continuing studies and research since that time and it was with this background that I read the kindle version of the book. The map of Alaska and the map of the area of the earthquake were not available for the kindle version and I should have investigated the hard cover version before reading the kindle version. To better understand the descriptions in the kindle version, I used google maps to see the relative location of what was being described in the book.The book needs more diagrams, pictures and exhibts to enhance the understanding of the descriptions. It was an enjoyable read and complimented what I had seen from an extended trip by car through Alaska in 2005 and visiting some of the areas where I had worked in 1961. Alaska is one the the greatest treasures of the US and this book will increase most peoples understanding of Alaska and its citizens.
I cannot claim this is a totally unbiased review, as my story as the teacher (Kristine Madsen) in Chenega at the time of this amazing geologic occurrence, was included in the narrative! However, Henry Fountain's extensive professional research and writing does deserve 5 stars.He presents the scientific facts in a manner that brings a very human aspect to the events preceding and following this powerful and revealing episode of the ever shifting movement of our earth. This book is informative, interesting and a highly readable account of a theory that, as a result of years of diligent field work by the intrepid geologist George Plafker;is now a proven fact!
"The Great Quake" recounts the Good Friday earthquake that hit Alaska on March 27, 1964, largest earthquake to hit North America, and the second most powerful earthquake on record anywhere.Anyone interested in geology or Alaska will get a lot out of this book. Fountain is a science journalist, and combines detailed reporting with clear explanations of the science of earthquakes, and what was first called "continental drift", now plate tectonics, which has transformed our understanding of geology.Vivid descriptions: "Many heard a deep roar as the quake got up to speed... the deep sounds were overwhelmed by the sharper and closer sounds of glass breaking, nails popping and wood splintering. Away from the cities and towns, some heard sharp cracks as thick ice shattered on lakes, or loud booms followed by a distant rushing sound as snow and rocks broke and tumbled down mountain sides. This being the height of the Cold War, many Alaskans who heard a booming sound thought that the Soviet Union must have dropped an atomic bomb on their state. In his cabin outside of Cordova, one woodsman was so convinced Russian battleships were shelling the coast that he grabbed his hunting rifle, hopped into his truck and drove toward town to fight the expected invaders in the streets."The book follows the personal narratives of two main characters. Kristine Madsen was a schoolteacher from southern California, teaching in the tiny Inuit town of Chenega along the coast, and George Plafker was a field geologist for the USGS who was the first to fly over the destruction following the quake. Madsen's schoolhouse stood seventy feet up a hill from the village on the shore, reachable only by a long staircase. It was almost the only structure left standing after the tsunami hit, sheltering children and other villagers who were able to race up the steps in time. Many could not.Plafker grew up in Brooklyn, and first studied rocks looking mica schists in Central Park. A love for field work and the vast outdoors led him to the US Geological Survey, and with them to Alaska. Plafker got so involved in trying to understand the earthquake that he began to write on geophysics, not just geological mapping which was his area. In the process, he became a key player in the development of Alfred Wegener's early 20th century idea of "continental drift", now understood as plate tectonics.Fountain's writing style is smooth, and I moved rapidly through the book. I spent more time on the geology and its history, and somewhat less time on other subjects covered: the destruction and rebuilding of Valdez, for example, and the impact on Alaskan state politics that followed the devastation. But the book moves well.Excellent book.
