Hassam shots down an American Airliner with a stinger missile. Hassam is murdered by "Yasim", who is extracted by a helicopter, and the yacht blows up. The attack is actually financed by an American arms dealer (with the substantial support of a "SPECTRE"-like cartel of individuals [including the chief of the Mossad] who desire to promote world instability). The attack is blamed on "The Sword of Gaza" which is actually innocent in this case. The good-guy protagonist is CIA analyst Michael Osbourne.COMMENTSAfter the first several dozen named characters, I gave up writing down names and notes, and thereafter frequently had no idea who was speaking to whom nor why. It was just too much work to keep track of the numerous interchangeable secondary characters.Despite the numerous characters, none of them engaged me, and all of the potentially interesting characters are killed off after a few pages. Osbourne is the key "good guy", but his abysmal tastes and judgement in women put me off. The whining Elizabeth is particularly annoying--but she's the "good one".There is sort of a "critical mass" of implausibilities which are allowable in a novel before "suspension of disbelief" is strained too far. The "critical mass" depends on how engaging the novel is. I did not find any of the characters in "The Mark of the Assassin" to be engaging--I did not care what happened to them. So, I found myself deeply annoyed by many unnecessary implausibilities, and even cheering for Delaroche and his stupid girlfriend at times.It would take too long to catalog the serious implausibilities, so I'll just point out a few. It makes no sense that Delaroche was extracted from the yacht by a helicopter--which would be easily visible and tracked on radar. Besides, where did it take him? Presumably to another ship--in which case it would have been far more logical if Delaroche had reached the "other ship" by the Zodiac (inflatable boat) which is otherwise unnecessarily mentioned. Perhaps some idiot editor suggested that a helicopter would be more dramatic.For another example, the idiotic "signature" three-shots-to-the-face" is absurd for a professional assassin who has allegedly gone to insane lengths to remain "below-the-radar".Finally, being paid millions of dollars for a series of assassinations, such a person would have used some of the cash to contract trusted "support services". Instead, Delaroche implausibly depends on his employers to supply him with air travel, vehicles, etc.--giving them the opportunity to collect finger prints, DNA, photos, voice prints, etc. which they can use to track him down and assassinate him when the "jobs" are over. Remember that Delaroche is so paranoid that he murders his best friend, only because said best friend is the only person on earth who knows his true identity. Why is such a professionally paranoid suddenly so trusting of "employers" whose identity is not even known to him?On the good side, the author displays an excellent international vocabulary, using American terms in the U.S., British terms in England, and so forth.THE VERDICTAlmost as fundamentally absurd as a James Bond novel, but not as much fun. A good read if you find it easy to overlook the shortcomings described above.
While I am new to this writer, I am not new to his genre. I had read only one other book by this writer, "The Black Widow". I did a review of that book and headlined it as "scary". At that time I wasn't sure I wanted to read him any further. But...here I am.This was without question one of the best books, by any author, I have read. The plot line is superb. The rising action builds, subtly, to the anti climax, which explodes in your face. The characters, both protagonist and antagonist, are believable and well defined. The best mark I can give a book is to say that it grabbed me from page one and did not let me go until page last. This book fit that level of captivity to the tenth degree.Daniel Silva does his research so thoroughly that the story line comes out as a fact based read rather than as a work of fiction. I read a lot of counter terrorism and covert ops. This is some to the best stuff I've ever found.I expect to be reading this writer for some time. That he is so prolific only makes me more a fan.
Daniel Silva has become yet another spectacular spy/political thriller novelist that has been on the scene for years that I’m only now just discovering as I delve deeper and deeper into this genre…and in this excellent book, The Mark of the Assassin, I’m learning that I’m not even getting his best work; this novel is a very early effort (1998), with a character (CIA Case Worker Michael Osborne) that he’s already long since retired (following this work and a single follow-up). But if his “new†go-to creation, Gabriel Allon, and that continuing storyline is anything like what we experience here, then I’m sure to become a lifelong fan.With “Assassin,†Silva immediately impresses with high political intrigue, supreme action, heavy plot twists and, above all, superior literary skills…this novel takes off from the very start and is high octane throughout, exactly what one wants from a book like this. I knew this book and this author had struck a heavy chord when an extremely frustrating airport experience in Phoenix, which finally ended in two long delays and a resulting mechanical failure, was severely lessened when I was able to make major inroads into this plotline. THAT is the mark of a great novel in my mind!This work begins with the shoot-down of a U.S. passenger airliner over Long Island as it departs from Kennedy International. A stinger missile, launched from a small boat off of Montauk is quickly determined to be the cause, raising immediate terrorist concerns. The culprit’s body however is discovered with the launcher and three bullet holes in his head, only adding to the mystery. Our protagonist, CIA Case Officer Michael Osborne immediately recognizes this as the signature of a mysterious assassin ultimately known as October, clouding the terrorist view and setting the stage for our story.In parallel with this gruesome act, we’re slowly introduced to a subversive, secretive society involving the highest of the power players in Washington and the power elite, the huge money gambol that focuses specifically on the defense contracting world here, and all prior to a Presidential election. Leveraging this sad occurrence for popular support in Congress, incumbent President James Beckwith garners not only backing for a massive missile defense program (and sure defeat for his Democratic foe Andrew Sterling), but a huge increase in his popular opinion poll numbers.Weaving these two disparate paths into a brilliantly cohesive tale involving world politics and global geography (Silva is amazing at describing locales throughout Northern Europe, Washington D.C and Long Island), we watch as Osborne and October inevitably collide, learning that it was October who’d also tragically killed Osborne’s first love, a story that in and of itself that has deeper meaning as this plotline unfolds. Both men, we discover, have a much more introspective side and Silva spends much time exploring that, adding much depth to this storyline.The only minor quibble that I’d make with the book is that Silva seemed to go extremely overboard by establishing each character as a smoker…each scene had each character light up and light up again…it got to be almost distracting! I don’t know if he was trying to symbolize the spy/terrorist/underworld business as tension filled to the extent that only tobacco can be the salve but, man!! Even Osborne’s pregnant wife is jones-ing for a cigarette! I hope this dynamic disappears quickly from future works…Minor quibble aside, this is a fantastic work, full of all the nuances, action, intrigue and literary skills one wants from the spy/thriller genre. Daniel Silva obviously went on from this early work to become a major author and it is clear to see why…I am certainly looking forward to reading much more in his catalogue and if one is looking to see the birth of genius, The Mark Of The Assassin is an excellent place to start.

Michael McNicholas is the Managing Director of Phoenix Management Services Group in the USA, Panama, and Costa Rica, Operations Support Services (Panama), and Pathfinder Consulting, LLC in the USA. Michael has over fourteen years of distinguished and progressive Law Enforcement, Military, and Intelligence experience and, most recently, twenty years as Founder/Co-Founder of several successful professional security services corporations in Latin America and the USA. A former Non-Commissioned and Commissioned Officer (Direct Presidential Appointment) in the US Army, Mr. McNicholas served for nine years in Airborne Infantry, Military Police, and Military Intelligence units. Mr. McNicholas held a TOP SECRET security clearance in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), where he specialized in counter-narcotics trafficking and international terrorism and served on the Vice President’s Narcotics Interdiction Task Force and as the CIA Liaison to US Coast Guard Intelligence. Michael designed, implemented, and managed the internationally-acclaimed seaport security program at Manzanillo International Terminal - Panama, the largest container port in Latin America. In 2003, he spearheaded the successful efforts to have Phoenix Management Services Group designated as the first “Recognized Security Organization” (RSO) by the Republic of Panama and the Dominican Republic. On behalf of the government of Panama, Phoenix evaluated and approved/rejected Ship Security Plans for over 2,500 ships in the Panama Registry. In the Dominican Republic, Phoenix conducted Port Facility Security Assessments and wrote the Port Facility Security Plans for two of the primary ports in the country. Mr. McNicholas is credited with co-pioneering the Maritime Security Team (Anti-piracy/stowaway/drug trafficking/terrorist) concept in commercial cargo shipping and has Maritime Security Teams deployed onboard container and cargo ships in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean.

Great cookbook! Beautiful pictures and recipes worth making for Passover and all year round. However, as previous reviews point out, substitute either vegetable bouillon or vegan Not Chick'n bouillon for chicken bouillon. Also, use vegan "margarine" by using Earth Balance or another vegan choice. Same with chocolate chips...buy the vegan type, not regular semi-sweet or milk. It does seem after 6 years of being vegan, the author would have made note of this info. Other than those exceptions, I plan to use this cookbook year round with the above alterations.
Good basic cookbook for a starting vegan, but relies too heavily on processed ingredients. It has some tasty recipes, but if you don't use vegetarian consomme powder, you will have to give many recipes a miss. But it was so nice to see a vegan Passover cookbook instead of the meat-heavy options usually available.
I can't wait to use this. However, just a warning that a lot of the recipes use nuts so if you're allergic I would not recommend this. Although, I do Sefardic/Mizrahi rules for Passover and eat kitniyot and if you do too then get this and just substitute the nut milks for soy milk and the nuts themselves for sunflower seeds or beans.
Excellent product
Delicious and easy recipes. Great for holidays and every day cooking. Clear direction and nice photographs. This is a good book for someone that is entering the world of the vegan cooking.
Lots of good recipes, although I did alter the meatball recipe by cooking the mushrooms before mixing them with the rest of the ingredients, I look forward to trying the other recipes next year.
THIS IS NOT A VEGAN COOKBOOK BECAUSE MANY RECIPES USE CHICKEN BOULLION!

Well, here's a kid who brings out the worst in her parents. I read this book in one uninterrupted go and then deleted it so it wouldn't haunt my ipad. the mother and daughter main characters are well developed and believeable, and it's fascinating to understand, along with the mom, the gradual dawning of this kid's psychosis/sociopathy...or whatever her problem is. A terrific read, kudos to the editor.

I also became forevermore enamored of the “unreliable narratorâ€, and seek them out wherever I can. “Baby Teethâ€, the debut by Zoje Stage, has been widely compared to Shriver’s novel, due to the subject matter, but there the similarities end.Is seven year old Hanna a sociopath, psychopath, psychotic, neurotic, or possessed? Are her parents clueless, self-involved, and delusional? It’s easy to keep reading to try to find out, but it feels like so much “empty caloriesâ€.“Baby Teeth†has been widely hyped, and I kept waiting for a bombshell, but there isn’t one. It describes an Electra Complex on steroids, and none of the main characters are remotely likeable or sympathetic. It does address mental illness eventually, in a no-nonsense and practical way that is helpful for general awareness, and in that there is a public service done here.

Last night I watched a remake of The Bad Seed on Lifetime TV. About 30 minutes into the movie, I rolled my eyes at how shallow the plot was and turned it off. This afternoon I began reading Baby Teeth and couldn’t believe how similar the plot was to the movie, The Bad Seed, and how equally terrible it was! There is nothing original about this timeworn story about a demonic child who is out to get rid of her mother in order to have Daddy all to herself! I could kick myself for falling victim to those reviews that guaranteed a shocking twist at the end of the story - spoiler alert...there was none. This book was compared to Gone Girl but is absolutely nothing like it; the characters are so underdeveloped that I found myself skipping to the end after reading only 4 chapters. The ending was not only predictable, but frustrating because the reader gets the idea that there could be a sequel! Now that would be my worst nightmare!
Wow! What a book!The GOOD:1. I could not put this book down. The story was so totally engrossing, I read it in one day...in between chores and a million other activities.2. As an RN, I was terribly impressed by the author's familiarity and expertise of Crohn's disease. Her medical knowledge was impressive, although I'm still not entirely certain what role the disease actually played in the book. I kept waiting for it to become clear, but it never really did. It seemed more educational than entertaining.3. While I'd ultimately classify this more as a family drama than a thriller, the characters were so well fleshed out, they felt very real. As a homeschooling mother myself, I could empathize with Suzette's frustrations.The BAD:1. The writing was odd. There were periods and capital letters all throughout the story where there simply shouldn't be. An example--“So … We have to make things better. Between us. I’m sorry if I pushed you too fast. I wish you could understand. School, and how important it is. If we’re together so much and I’m teaching you at home … And what you really need is other people." (page 225 on Kindle)There are so many grammatical errors in those few sentences! It was terribly distracting, and it happened again and again throughout the novel.2. I realize Hanna was supposed to be a 7-year old genius, but her thoughts, and those of her mother, were indistinguishable. Had the chapter headings not identified whose perspective I was reading, I wouldn't have been able to tell. No 7-year old, genius or otherwise, has thought processes like those Hanna was having. Her voice was that of a worldly adult. It was my one main gripe about Baby Teeth.3. Alex's inability to see Hanna for what she truly was was beyond annoying. I honestly felt sorry for Suzette throughout 90% of the book, having to deal with a husband who disregarded her at every turn, and allowed Hanna to undermine her authority. He was a very weak man.The UGLY:1. There is only one point to be made in this category, but I feel it encompasses the essence of the story.For the most part, I found Suzette to be a sympathetic character--she's a woman dealing with a chronic (and potentially body deforming) illness, a husband who disregards and undermines everything she says, a child who hates everything about her and wants to eliminate her from their family, and a career put on the back burner. Yet, there is a sense throughout the novel that Suzette's deepest, darkest, wholeheartedly negative feelings about her child, and motherhood, were made very clear to Hanna during her formative years. Children are very intuitive and can easily pick up on those energies.The conclusion was shocking...at least to the mother in me, but it was very, very well done.And can we just talk about the amazing book cover and even more amazing title for a minute? Because they're both pure perfection.4.25 well-earned stars!
Review contains spoilers.I felt I had read a similar story before, and I have. But I was more bothered by the abrupt ending. It was as if the author copied the plot but couldn't find a unique ending. I literally went back thinking I had skipped pages.
I loved this book! I don’t know any Mom’s that haven’t let that loving mask slip when being tested by their child, especially when a child is deliberately being irritating. It was interesting to see it from the child’s point of view, though this child was a bad combination of smart and vindictive. I hope there is another one after Hanna fakes her way out of the school.
I love dark and scary reads - LOVE them. But this book is something else beyond dark/scary. I am finding I can read it in increments - and I must go that way because it was so unnerving. As to the child, all I could think of was those "demon kids" that were prevalent in fiction a while ago ("Damien" for example).I had to say any book "creeped me out," so I'm determined to read this through. I'm now at the part involving medicine tampering (oh no) so I just had to put it down for a while ... BUT I will be back.I actually have rated it 4 STARS because the writing is realistic and original and the author did quite a remarkable job of creating the scares. So If you can manage it, here's a book that presents a true creepiness challenge for you!

Very informative about some things. Very good quality paperbackbook. star rating due to the authors/publishers kind of upwelling themselves a lot. It seems like they try and mention their own name as much as possible. When reading it, you can tell. Nice book and I love it has a lot of decent tattoo flash and the quality.
A good book for ideas. You can draw up with anything your mind can imagine. I was pleasantly surprised when the book came wit a CD of a thousand designs. This is worth the money.
