Keep your life, family and career intact while Living Abroad hits all the bases in identifying the common snares of moving to a new country. This is not a ‘how-to- book so much as a way to pinpoint issues as they arise and have strategies to deal with the situation. The author is clear that ‘awareness is half the cure’.As an expatriate of 28 years in Hong Kong and Malaysia I can identify closely with many of the pitfalls… especially now that I have returned to Australia where I had reverse culture shock. As I read through I kept on picturing particular people I have known in Asia and how they really do encounter divorce, homesickness, loneliness, profligate spending, having affairs and wallowing in the luxury lifestyle of an expat -- a lifestyle that won’t be available when they return home. This book, well-written and easy to read will make all the difference to people moving to a new country and to those who are returning home after many years abroad. There is an even greater depth to the book because many of the issues are life issues and apply to anyone, anywhere. Though for the about-to-be or entrenched expat, this book provides the right mix of life tales and professional insights to make it an essential read.Mark Amdur
This book is an excellent guide to the expat experience. Cathy Tsang-Feign clearly charts the emotions you can expect to feel at each stage of your adaptation to a new country, and provides suggestions for managing those emotions successfully. She also charts the experience in reverse, providing guidance for the return, which is unexpectedly difficult for many. I wish I'd had this book when I returned from my service in the Peace Corps. Tsang-Feign puts a name to the issues I faced at the time, specifically identity inflation, and identity deflation. These issues are particularly acute for a young American who is a near-celebrity in a small African village, and returns home to have trouble finding even a low-wage job. I will definitely recommend this book to recently returned volunteers.
I love this book. Expat life can be challenging and reading different stories and topics made me feel good. I would recommend it.
It is a great book for expats, help you to understand expat lifes. All expats should read it! Helps you to face and to solve problems.
Cathy, a friend and neighbor, gave me the first edition of her book when I was departing Hong Kong for Taiwan. Having read the first and second editions now, I can strongly recommend it for anyone who is going abroad to work. Cathy provides a very succinct synopsis of the many risks faced by expatriates at various stages of their careers. The book also offers solutions for this quite special group of people who have left their native land and cut the tether with their accustomed support groups. It's a thought-stimulating read.
This book does not have any valuable practical advise. It talks about a bunch oftrivial matters without going beyond obvious common sense observations. It isbasically nothing but psycho-bubble.
When you're thinking of living abroad, there are plenty of books that describe the host country and tell you what to do in your new home. But it's hard to find a good guide that explains what your new home could do to you.Cathy Tsan-Feign's excellent "Living Abroad: What every expat needs to know" does just that. Using examples inspired by her work as a family therapists, Tsang-Feign prepares readers for all of the potential but rarely discussed pitfalls of packing up your life and moving to a new home abroad for an extended stay. You won't find any technical jargon or abstract theories in this book. The author uses a simple spare style that's easy to read and understand. She illustrates each point with stories of people who have experienced upsets abroad and how they could better deal with their problems. The book covers a full range of difficulties expatriates could face, from marriage problems, to work stress, to dealing with an overload of visitors. She guides readers through the process of culture shock and even the unexpected trauma of trying to decide when to move back home. But while the book deals with problems, the tone is always positive and helpful."Living Abroad: What every expat needs to know" is the kind of book I would recommend to any friend who is preparing for an extended overseas assignment. It might not prevent all the problems they might face, but it would make those problems easier to deal with.Keep Your Life, Family and Career Intact While Living Abroad: What every expat needs to know
