Overall I'd give this book positive ratings -- at least so far as the general content is concerned. Very few mainstream books about IBM mainframe architecture and assembly language are being written these days . Many of the author's explanations in plain language, particularly of recently-added IBM hardware features, are no doubt not available anywhere else, except hidden in dark corners of arcane IBM technical publicationsBravo to the author for that!My primary gripes with this book concern 1) very poor proofreading/editing and 2) very poor physical construction.=> 1. Just as an example, but a glaring one, the copyright page tells us that "Windows if [ sic] a trademark of Microsoft Corporation." Hey, this is at least the third edition of the book, if the copyright dates are to be believed (2011, 2013, 2014). Do you think someone just might have noticed and fixed that typo by now?=> 2. The book is literally falling apart on me! When one page in the middle of the book suddenly came loose and fell out, I lovingly glued it back in, hoping there would be no more of the same. But a week or two later it's the same story with yet another page. How much free time do I have to restore a book, page by page, that I purchased only a month or two ago, and have treated --as I do all my books-- with great care and respect (such that nothing *I* have done could be causing it to unravel on me).I would not normally hold it against this book, or any book, that rather than being published by Addison-Wesley, or O'reilly, or McGraw-Hill, or one of the other big names in computer book publishing, its publisher is Threadsafe Publishing and Railway Maintenance Co. of Hyannis, Nebraska. But when the *quality* suffers greatly on that account, I would certainly hold that against the book!Is the name "Threadsafe Publishing and Railway Maintenance Co." some kind of a joke? Well, they should stick to what they know best. (Laying track, perhaps? Hey, you won't find *me* riding on any of their rail lines!) But leave book production to the experts.Instead of "Threadsafe Publishing...", the company would be more aptly named "Threadbare Publishing".
I bought this book with the intention of accomplishing one thing...come up to speed on all the new instructions and changes related to 64 bit. Well, this book is very poorly written did not help me much. Although it's a fairly new edition (2011 - reason why I bought it in the first place) compared to my old 1986 book, the writer has a hard time explaining even the basics of the language. His writing style is convoluted and unclear and the examples are poorly chosen. I did a search and this seems to be one of the only new editions of Assembly language for the mainframe. Any one out there with good knowledge of the language could make a lot of money publishing a book covering this subject. After all, the mainframe business is still alive and well.
Having started my career in programming in the early 1960's -- machine language, in the case of IBM / 360 / 370 and following mainframes were my "teething rings". The current book would have been improved only by including more on the user defined macro instructions which almost all programmers use to manage the allocation of SAVE AREA's and BASE REGISTERS. Other than that, the book is up-to-date including the expanded addressing of the newer machines -- a neat trick.
There book has a good content but there are several errors in formatting , turning difficult for a novice to learn with this book.I recommend this book for someone with experience in Assembler for X86 or MIPS .Other problem, IBM architecture has some oddities and is not a good start for any student.
I am an application programmer [HLL] with 35 + years experience on IBM plafforms, but have no knowledge of BAL or Assembler. I was unable to get into this book. I'm sure programmers with some assembler background would understand this book, but Not for beginners.

This a well-written introduction to IBM z/Architecture assembly language - aimed probably at Freshmen CS students. Very good for someone just getting started. It lacks details of more advanced books - however it is easily understood.

I start to dig and dig and dig, and as soon as you know it, I've already wandered through every recent article. It's a really intriguing science and this book brings out its educational side perfectly.
This book reminds me of my early childhood when I use to go investigating on the school field, always loving to explore things. It's really nice to explore and experience those childhood memories again, and just learning a little bit more about archaeology. A nice book with interesting facts!
This book is a good starting point for those interested in archaeology. It has all the general information needed to get you started: history of archaeology, the practice of it and how it differs from other, similar practices like paleontology. This book is much too wordy, and used language too complicated and boring to connect with children. I do believe the audience for the book was supposed to be children, but I find this book cumbersome, and I may never really read it very often to my kids. You are better off with a children's bible.

I read the description for the Board Book edition of Caps for Sale and thought it was the original book. I was so excited to find Caps for Sale as a board book because it is my 3 year old daughter's favorite book and the paperback copy we have is not holding up well to daily use. As we read the board book, my daughter kept saying, "But, Mommy, that isn't how it goes!" After we read it one time, she told me it was trash and tried to throw it away. If you or your child loves the original version of this wonderful tale, do not buy the board book.
I was so disappointed to get this book and discover that it's not the entire story! It's been abridged, even though no where is it noted in the advertisement that it's been abridged! We are so disappointed!!
I adore this story, and this little board book got my son hooked on it as well - but as others have mentioned, it's abridged and lacks some of the familiar rhythm that makes the original story so great. Once my son stops trying to tear apart paper pages, we will definitely be switching to the original version.
My 2 year old loves this story and we read it often. The story is about a peddler who walks around town with all the caps on his head, trying to sell them. Since no one was buying them, he took a nap by a tree, only to discover that a bunch of mischievous monkeys had taken them and were imitating his angry actions. We act it out, the stamping, fist shaking, and "tsk tsk" sound, which makes it really fun to read. I really like the rhythmic pattern to the story and the predictability of it - my daughter loves to predict what the monkeys will do next. The illustrations are vintage and simple, which I really like because it's such a different style from all the newer kids books. I also use this book in my second grade class to recognize story elements (setting, plot, characters, etc.) and we act it out as well. Highly recommended and it's a classic!
There is everything to like about this children's book. Great pictures help tell the story. The way this story is told gradually unfolds a very funny, very clever ending. Lots of fun with opportunities to get the children involved by copying the antics of the monkeys. And, just long enough to read through at one fun-filled sitting. I bought this copy for a new neighbor's 2 children. I knew it was a good choice because I read it to my son years ago, and to my friends' children over the years. It is always a great gift and the price makes it ideal. Enjoy!
Don't buy it. The board book is missing the first part of the story; it starts after setting the story up. This is too bad, because board books are so wonderful for little ones whose language and interest in stories is ahead of their dexterity. I'm disappointed.Another reviewer said that the newer versions are not quite the same as the original versions (1947,1949, and 1968 I think). I can't vouch for that, but if you're buying this book because you remember enjoying it yourself and now want to share it with your children or grandchildren, you might want to search for vintage editions.An afterthought: Amazon was wonderful about refunding my money for this item.
Our 3-year-old grand daughter loves the stories on La-La’s iPad. I can always count on her to see the icon for “Caps for Sale†and put her little finger on it. She loves to repeat his call as he walks down the streets, and she waits to giggle at the monkeys when they mimic the peddler. This book ranks among her favorites. Often, when we finish, she begs, “Read it again, La-La! Again!â€
Love this book. I read it when I was little and enjoy reading it now to my boys. My son has asked me to read it at east twice a day since he got it, he loves when we get to the part about the monkeys.

I received my purchased preorder of Champions in Time at midnight and before noon i had finished it! Just could not put it down! Sarah Woodbury is a incrdible author…her characters are full & detailed! Her storylines are complex & interesting! There is some romance, but it isn’t over the top, very loving & leaves a lot to your imagination sex-wise, as it should be! Has mystery, humor, time shifting & adventure!If this is your first book of the After Cilmeri series, I suggest you get the first of the series, Daughters in Time, in order to understand what has has happened & to set up this continuation of the series! It is a free on Amazon!!I was recommended this series on Diana Gabaldon’s website about Outlander!! Many of her fans were complaing of “Droughtlander†between new books & next season of tv series! Someone recommended the After Cilmeri series of books by Sarah Woodbury! I went straight to Amazon & ordered the 1st one, as I said, free! I was hooked…i ordered them one after another until i read them all! I now have read the complete series 16x’s!! Picking up almost immediately after the last book, this story finds David taking a quick breather before tracking down the latest group of traitors. Unfortunately the breather becomes botched when an assassin's bolt sends David to the present day leaving his compatriots to carry on without him while he navigates the pitfalls of the modern world.I still really love this series. The characters are unique and progress and the history is fun. But if I had any complaints it would be that this book featured too many povs and we could really use an appendix with who all of the historical domain characters are and why they were important. I found myself digging up old college textbooks for some of this and it lessened my enjoyment.I'm curious what the endgame is for this series.But overall the book getsFive stars.
Sarah Woodbury has done it again! This book is not only just as entertaining, interesting and well written, but is also surprising in where this series is going. I have said to others that this whole series makes more sense and would make an incredible TV series, much more so than a few that are out there. I would love to see these stories made into video. If you have never read these books, do start with Daughter of Time and you will be hooked. And lucky you can read all of the books straight through without waiting for the next one. Once you are a fan, you will want the next one right away. Sarah Woodbury is a scholar who writes with excellent research, develops believable and smart characters who capture our hearts and imaginations. Now, we wait impatiently for the next one.
I have to point out that I'm a fan of this series - despite the fact that yes, they COULD be described as wishy-washy romance novels by some - to the point that I pre-order the new books. I think that if you combine a basically good story with a good author (and one who's noticeably grown in their art over the course of the story, at that) anyone can enjoy it. The whole idea of going back in time, and meeting some big meaty Highlander (who is probably near toothless and stinks, if you want to get technical) has been done to death, now, but this author takes a new and very often entertaining approach. She also manages to make her story educational, in the same way that George MacDonald Fraser's books are perhaps unintentionally so. I knew perhaps a lot more about English history than most Americans, but I've learned a lot about Welsh history and I'm actually descended from people in her books. It is fiction, yes, but she's given me a real connection to these long-dead kin. I recommend every book in this series and I recommend you start with the first volume, even though each separate book stands well enough on its own.
I have finished the newest installment in the After Climeri series! Palace intrigue, betrayal, fast paced edge of your seat excitement in the past alternate universe's Middle Ages. I enjoy all of Sara Woodbury’s books and this is no exception. In fact this might be the best one in the series of 15, although I am quite partial to book 13 Outpost in Time. Start at the beginning if you can, Daughter of Time, you won’t be disappointed. The adventures, misadventures and hazards of time travel are all blended together with history and fiction. Entertaining and well written. As you go through the series you will see David grow and mature and what he is trying to accomplish with new thinking in an old world with more than a few challenges.You have to read it and if you get through all 15 and I bet you will, check out the other series, Gwen and Gareth, The Lion of Wales (my personal favorite) and The Pendragon Saga. Enjoy

Sarah continues with characters introduced in the last book but then takes them in an unexpected direction and leaves us with a bit of a cliff-hanger. I like how over the years she has introduced new characters and made them of different ethnicities, finding ways to integrate them into the alternate universe. Eagerly awaiting the next one to find out why he...........
The next chapter in a great series. The storyline continues. I love this series. It is a mix of actual historical figures and a fantasy that you can fall into. Love the character development as well as the themes of government, family and values. A real pleasure to immerse yourself into that world. Does not contain sex scenes. Refreshing. Recommend you start from the beginning of the series.

It's ok, but already somewhat dated in this fast moving field. For example, Nicotinamide came out after his book, and is not included. More oddly, he entirely skips some areas of longevity research. For example, in his emphasis on pills to mimick calorie restriction, he totally ignores the valuable research of Valter Longo on doing actual calorie restriction relatively painlessly. Maybe someday a pill can provide all the benefits of fasting without actually fasting, but we know that fasting will certainly provide the benefits of fasting. LOL
I usually get bored easily with most of the non fiction science related books I read due to the amount of claims with no references and too many generalities. But this book had none of that. I was so amazed about how well the writer knew the drama and history behind aging research and most top researchers. The book read more like a medical novel to me and it kept me interested until the end. I am looking forward to any future books he writes!Great work and highly recommended!Nelson VergelAuthor
I have now read three books on anti-aging research [(1) "Ending Aging" by DeGrey, (2) "Eternity Soup" by Critser, and now (3) "The Youth Pill" by Stipp]. Hands down,"The Youth Pill" is the best book out there today. This book succeeds where both DeGrey and Critser failed. Critser's book, in my opinion was an outright dud, providing little substantive information and an immature writing style to boot. DeGrey's book was very informative, but it mainly focused on DeGrey's own work and opinions, some of which are controversial, and in a few cases, scientifically outlandish. Stipp has written the most objective overview of the field, and has done a masterful job. For a business writer, Stipp is surprisingly accurate at describing the scientific history of this field. He gives credit to almost everyone who deserves it, without any overly positive or negative biases. The book is not too long, and each chapter is fulfilling (unlike DeGrey's and Critser's books). I congratulate this author on a fine addition to this field which should be THE FIRST book that anyone truly serious about getting a broad perspective on anti-aging research should read. Well done!
I have been reading several books about the anti-aging initiative and science behind it. If you read one book about it, I recommend "Ending Aging" by Aubrey de Grey, but if you read several, this is a must. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the science came to be, focusing on case studies and particular people and instances which had an effect on the science as we know it today, and a projection of what lies ahead.Though a bit hard to read (not only for the author's eloquent word choices that were often above my head, requiring a dictionary near by, but also for the deep subject matter, and delightful pacing between light humor and hard science), I feel the book offers valuable information summarized to one text. Part of the confusion too is how the author discusses case studies and details which are never really put into context in ways that relate them to each other. I suppose that's the job of the scientist's though. The information is there, but it's up to to others to piece it together.Another thing to note is how the author doesn't take too much bias to one side. Though there is striking scientific evidence which hold some promise coming from all different directions, he takes each one with a sense of possibility and skepticism. This is important, because running with the wrong information or discrediting correct information could certainly hold us back in our quest to end and manage aging (which, in my opinion, should be our focus in society right now).I also enjoyed the Audible edition (which I highly recommend because it helps you pronounce correctly the names and scientific vernacular). It was clear, well-read, though there were a few discrepancies between the text and the audio edition (though I have the 2011 edition). I was able to read along at a pace much quicker than my normal reading speed.Thank you, David Stipp, for this wonderful book, and thank you, Amazon, for introducing it to me.
I enjoyed the book. The book gives different insights on possible breakthroughs on extending life. I took from the book is their are a variety of different variables that impact longetivity. I.E. there is no quick answer. Its very nuanced. Interesting read. Highly recommended.

The author takes on complicated and fascinating issues and addresses them well. The book is well written, excellently referenced and easy to read; I read it in two evenings. I am a red wine aficionado so I read Chapter 9 first. This helped me navigate through the rest of the book with a greater understanding than if I had started with Chapter 1. The difficulty in writing about the topic of the book is that new insights into aging are uncovered every day. This means that any book written on the topic, including this book, is obsolete before it is published.I recommend to the book to anyone interested in the topic...and who isn't.
