When I first got this coloring book, I was kind of skeptical it was so detailed and kind of strange. But when I started coloring with my new Prismacolor water-soluble colored pencils(the one with a tiger on the front, 36 count, I was truely amazed at the outcome!! Just give it a try, it's worth the effort. I did not use any water, just the pencils

Anthony Saunders is the John M. Schiff Professor of Finance and the Chair of the Department of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University. Professor Saunders received his PhD from the London School of Economics and has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses at NYU since 1978. This book explains finance institutions and the way they manage risk very clearly and explicitly. It is the required text for my International Banking course. Great textbook.

I wish you'd written more, Chef! Your stories and story yelling ability deserve more than appetizer status - I want a book of just the full meal deal stories!
Saw this book several months ago when it first came out. I passed it by because I saw "Smoke" and "New Southern Kitchen": My mind immediately turned to barbecue and Deep South Gulf Coast recipes. Living down below Houston, I don't need another "new" attitude towards cooking Texas- or Louisiana-style dishes. But when I saw it available at my local library, I decided to get on the waiting list for it. I've had it for a few weeks now and I'm very excited by the recipes I've tried and those that I've marked. Boy, what a fool I've been! Oh, what I've been missing! I can't avoid it; I am ordering my own copy of this book. (And I think the cover of this book is a bit misleading--I'm not sure where "Smoke" comes in...)As I state in the title of my review, the ingredient lists are way, way long. But--for once--I don't care how long they are. The many ingredients allow for a complexity of flavor that I don't often see in "do-able" recipes. Assembling ingredients is probably the most difficult and time-consuming part of these recipes. And that's not a terrible thing, is it? By "do-able"--and I like "do-able"--I mean recipes that don't take hours and hours to build; recipes that don't break the bank, and recipes where the instructions don't cause my heart to flutter with anxiety (over intricacy issues) or consternation (over unclear directions).And, I usually shy away from cookbooks written by restaurant chefs, but this time I don't care about that either. The dishes that Chef Lee has created for this book are outstanding and he is not overbearing.There are incredible recipes in this book. He uses miso, rice, citrus, soy sauce, peppers, mayo and cola. Then, of course there is a chapter of beef, pork, fowl (chicken, turkey, game birds) and well-loved Southern veggies.Do you like to make quick pickles? I sure do! Included are some interesting combinations that I've not run across before: Pineapple and jicama, caraway (instead of dill) to flavor cuke slices, Bourbon-Pickled Jalapenos (and I think mine turned out prettier than his because I used both red and green peppers), jasmine tea and star anise with peaches, grape halves with chai tea, coffee beans with beets and cherries with rosemary. There are also four seasonal recipes for kimchi. I like to make kimchi; it's not hard to do, just a bit time-consuming and a waiting period for the fermentation process. UPDATE, Aug. 2013: The simple caraway seed and cuke pickle is the best quick pickled cuke that I've ever tasted. I've made two batches already. The peach pickle is wonderful and the pickle juice is so versatile I've been using as a secret ingredient in savory dishes. The grape pickle is tart and brings contrast to a dish. I've used it successfully in a tomato salad, of all things. I can't pick up the bourbon flavor in the jalapeno pickle and I thinking through how I can rectify that. Bottom line, at this point in time: The pickle recipes are keepers!There is a complex "master" remoulade sauce that runs through many recipes in the book with a little of this and that added to compliment the dish--sometimes it's miso that is added, or maybe corn and chili powder, or kimchi.Here are favorite recipes; some I've made, some are on the bucket list:--The Vietnamese Lamb Chops (honey, bourbon, fish sauce, lime and more in the marinade) is super. (I grilled them; he roasts them.)--There is a fabulous meatloaf flavored with cola and bourbon that he's combined with a pepper gravy and a sunny-side up egg on an open sandwich.--He's made a ham pho that is less complex than the traditional beef pho.--I grew up with pork ribs and sauerkraut, but Lee cooks it in such a way that he takes the simple dish over the top, and then he tops it with a horseradish cream. I may never make my old recipe again.--He's got recipes incorporating country hams and a recipe for a tamarind-strawberry glazed "city" ham.--There is a somewhat simple Poached Grouper that is heavenly.--And, talking fish recipes: My favorite recipe in the book is this one: Panfried catfish; the fillets are not breaded, just fried in butter and oil in a skillet. But it's the vinaigrette that sends me: Red seedless grapes crushed in the blender and combined with bacon, thyme, vinegar and mustard; simply beautiful.--He's made a rhubarb mignonette for raw oysters, and a bourbon brown butter for baked oysters.--His idea for curing strawberries in salt and sugar sparks my imagination.--I've made the Braised Bacon Rice and it is mighty fine.--And his Bourbon-Ginger-Glazed Carrots is destined for my Thanksgiving table.--Because my husband doesn't much care for buttermilk, I halved the Buttermilk soup recipe and ate it all myself: Chilled, with maple syrup and tangerine juice, then topped with bourbon-soaked cherries.--And, a recipe we didn't like: His pimento cheese. We like pickle in ours.There are braised dishes: Short ribs; brisket with cinnamon, paprika, stout, bourbon and peach preserves; turkey legs with sorghum, cider and fresh sage; Cola Ham Hocks; a pork shoulder with Black BBQ Sauce, and lamb shoulder with bittersweet chocolate. He uses ground meats, too: Piggy Burgers with hoisin sauce and a sun-dried tomato ketchup with brown sugar and soy sauce; a rice bowl with lamb and fresh herbs, and an Asian-flavored chicken sausage to work with an orange-flavored miso remoulade in a rice bowl.There are essays scattered throughout the book. He talks about a local soy sauce, his favorite fish sauce (from Vietnam), country hams, frying at home, miso, sorghum, buttermilk, goat cheese and (of course) bourbon.Plus he talks about himself and his escapades and his life experiences. Together the words present a very personable and likable guy--one with a responsible attitude, inquisitiveness and sensitivity. Seems like he likes to drink and party and have fun, too.The pictures are excellent and interesting, the Resources section is enlightening and very helpful, and the index works very well with the recipes and the way the book is put together.I'm done. Sorry it took so many words. I guess I really like this book, and Chef Lee, and his creations.
I'm a grandmother and I've lived my entire life in the Deep South. I grew up on grits, biscuits, and BBQ. The last few years, I've taken an interest in various Asian cuisines, especially Korean foods such as kimchi. I would have never imagined that typical southern cuisine could be fused with Korean influences and result in such unique and bold flavors. Just reading this cookbook makes my mouth water.I usually skip long text in cookbooks, and go straight to the recipes. Not so in this case. For example, I very much enjoyed learning how Lee watched his grandmother making kimchi when he was a child, and the lessons he learned along the way. Every story he shares is interesting and often emotional. It brings a lot to the recipes that follow.While many of the recipes are complex, and well worth the time and effort, some of the simpler recipes are equally full of flavor. Roasted oysters are topped with a simple butter and bourbon sauce, and the results are mouthwatering!I love the way Lee has merged the two cuisines in unexpected ways. For example, in Korea it's common to take several ingredients and roll them up into little lettuce wraps. Here, Lee wraps lettuce around southern cornmeal fried oysters and country ham, and dabs it with a little caviar mayo. It's simple, but elegant and delicious.My favorite chapter must be Pickles and Matrimony. I found wonderful recipes for kimchi, as expected, but I also found pickled grapes with chai tea, pickled beets with coffee, and pickled cherries with rosemary. Each recipe is unique and builds upon layers of flavors in the most unexpected ways.I love everything that I've tried so far, and I'm not finished yet! Other than seafood, I don't eat meat. I was able to take some of Lee's recipes and convert them to tofu and tempeh with delicious results. The interesting combinations of ingredients in this cookbook have helped me to become more adventurous in my own kitchen. I really love this cookbook.
I hope I get a chance to meet Edward Lee someday and thank him for his work. I've never eaten at his restaurant (would like to do that, too) but we share a lot of common favorite foods (kimchi, grits, bourbon, rice with toasted edges, and various bits of pigs) and I've had many a feast reading his insightful words. Chef Lee's inclusive observations on food, cultural intersections, human compassion and keeping tradition alive by making new things have made me cry more than once. Hell, they've made me cry a lot. On a personal level, I'm glad that such an insightful observer not born in my culture (though I would gladly claim him as a cousin if he would let me) lets me know that the things I admire about the foodways and values of the mountain South aren't just nostalgia. On a global level, Mr. Lee's kind of thinking about human understanding and bringing it to a very big table just might be the stuff we need to save the world.
This is the second copy of smoke and pickles that I’ve purchased from Amazon. The first one has been well used and enjoyed. Ed Lee’s writing is beautiful. It’s smart and reflective and feels incredibly authentic. The recipes are great. I usually don’t follow recipes unless it’s something new or something that requires a specific recipe. That being said, I’ve cooked almost half the recipes in the book. It’s worth it just for the lamb bacon! I hope he writes another book one day!

As I started this book i was expecting very little. I was so wrong. The story is written from the POV of the addict and the attention to detail was right on. I too am a recovering addict for 16 years. I related so well to this character and the despair. Definitely worth reading.
This was uncomfortable to read and I hated what was happening at times, but I have been discussing this book with people I know who work with addiction recovery, which has really helped me process my feelings and form a deep respect for this book. It portrays addiction and withdrawal brutally, but without reducing the character to a stereotype. I believe the intent is to humanize people with substance use disorders to people unfamiliar with addiction. Addiction is caused by a mental illness, and something as unpredictable as an injury and a completely legal prescription can start a lifelong struggle that you never expected. I appreciated how Heroine neither villainized nor romanticized addiction.Aside from how it handles the topic, I also really enjoyed the flow of the writing. I've read all of Mindy's books and while this isn't my favorite story, this has my favorite writing of her 3 contemporaries so far. It's easy to read and Mickey is a well developed character and you can really empathize with her hopes and worries.tw: The book starts with this warning: "This book contains realistic depictions of opioid use. Recovered and recovering addicts should proceed with caution." PLEASE heed this warning. There is detailed use of pills, snorting, and needles. The drugs shown are Oxy and heroin. There is a car accident, injury, and brief hospitalization. There is also quite a bit of page time given to discussing poop, which felt appropriate due to the portrayal of withdrawal, but I know that's a squeamish thing for some.*An early copy was provided to me by the publisher for an honest review. My opinions are my own.*
Every parent out there needs to read this book, ESPECIALLY any parent who is reading this review and thinking, “Nah, this wouldn’t happen to my kid.†The opioid crisis is real, it is everywhere, and affects everyone who knows or loves an addict. This book tells a story about a young girl who started off with hopes and dreams, and until she found opioids, she was well on her way to realizing those dreams. It’s so realistic that I wanted to jump into her world and try to save her from making bad decisions. I also think that after parents have read this book, they may want to consider sharing it with their teens. It’s a heavy and dark subject (and yes, there’s some profanity) but heroin is a dark place, the epidemic is real, and it’s in our back yards. I bought this book today and read the whole thing...I had to know what was going to happen. Kudos to the author for writing a book that not only keeps you turning the pages, but is also an eye-opener on a topic that can’t, and shouldn’t be ignored.

In my opinion, this is not a book for dummies. This is a book for ordinary people, like me, who want to know the basics on mutual funds and other similar investments. One thing I liked about this book is that it hits the sweet spot: it’s not too simplistic or too complicated which can make other investment books useless. Another good thing about this book is that it provides a list of funds which have low fees, good management, and match specific investment objectives. On top of all that, this book is not painfully boing; I actually enjoyed reading it which says a lot for an investment book. So, in short, you are not a dummy if you read this book; reading this book is without a doubt a smart thing to do before you invest a cent, or another cent, in a mutual fund or ETF unless you are already a mutual fund expert.
I just retired and life has been a whirlwind. I know it;s late to start the investment game and the banks are paying next to nothing on what little money I have. But it is time to make a move and enjoy what so many other brave people have done. I was terrified of loosing what little money I have my cousin gave me the push I needed to get started. He suggested this book and I am so grateful he did. Investing is such a scary thing in todays economy and this book gave me the information I needed to begin playing the game. Mutual Funds for Dummies calmed the fears and was an invaluable took in choosing between minimal and middle of the road risk accounts. I feel confident in my investments and have been watching the money grow over the past week! I'm sure there will be bumps in the road for my investments but so far the accounts I invested in are making profits much more significant than a bank. At the rate my money is compounding I;m sure I can weather a financial storm and still be ahead of the local banks offerings. I wouldn't have made the conservative investments without the information in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels apprehensive about investing outside of their local bank or for beginners of any age.
Mutual Funds for Dummies - Eric Tyson As an individual who has traveled down the well trodden pathway of mutual fund investment and have stumbled and admittedly lost my way this book has proved to be extremely valuable. Certainly much of the practical investment psychology offered in this guide is just plain common sense - the one thing that many of us through out the window or never give thoughts too. Let me summarize: determine your goals, study the risks and rewards, steel yourself for the ups and downs of the market, periodically review your investments, made carefully adjustments to your portfolio as required and sit back, take some deep breaths and relax. This is your typical Dummies book as far as basic format is concerned - including those wonderful Tennant cartoons. Author Tyson writes with authority on the subject and provides a mini encyclopedia of mutual fund information that I believe many seasoned and novice investors will find useful.
My 21 year-old grandson was interested in learning about the stock market, and starting an investment strategy. He had 4 months of overseas deployment with USMC recently, so had some time to read. These books, Personal Finance in Your 20s For Dummies, Mutual Funds For Dummies, and Investing For Dummies, got him a good baseline of knowledge. He said on return that he read each one 3 times, shared the books with others, and even had his squad leader ask him to present training on how to set up a financial management and investment program.
I found this book to be very informative. It covered mutual funds of all types as well as basic investing principles. I definitely recommend reading this book before investing in mutual funds. The reason I gave it 4 stars is the lack of updated information. The main area I found this to be a problem was where it talked about money market funds. According to this book, money market funds return about 4%. They return 0.02% these days, making the chapter about money market funds somewhat misleading at the current point in time. This doesn't mean that the book is intentionally misleading, just that what was true of particular funds at the time of its writing is not necessarily true now.
Lots of good ideas but spends a lot of time SELLING mutual funds. Needs to state the facts and let the reader make up their mind what they want to do with their money, not sell the product. He also spend more than ample time slam dunking going to a regular broker and assumes everyone is dumb or incompetent to buy/sell stock on their own.Generally explains what and how mutual funds work. Although I started this book, Mutual Funds for Dummies, in self-defense when a financial issue came up while settling the family estate, I found I actually liked reading it. Not only is Eric Tyson clear and uses real-world examples, he defines vocabulary which is important for any field of study.As an early techie, no one could understand me when I babbled off about mounting diskpacks, aseembler language, and integer strings unless they were also in the field.Knowing the relevant vocabulary lets you "get" what you see on the news, in your investment statements or hear from professionals.I can check the impact of my operating expenses (now that I know what they are and what their impact is) against those funds the author mentions and can have a "more adult" discussion with my broker.Mind you, I'm no dummy. The nuts and bolts of investing have just come to me late in life which is perfect -- now I have the time to study it, and spend the profitable results.Thanks Eric.

This book was a required text for my EKG reading classes in my last semester of nursing school. I liked how it broke everything down to the basics and it was not wordy. Very easy to read and understand. I bought the kindle edition and loved that I could put it on my little kindle instead of adding another book to my ever growing backpack of nursing books!
It was for my granddaughter, she is school to be a Paramedic.
The college bookstore where my granddaughter goes to school did not have this text book in stock. Fortunately, Amazon was able to provide it to us before her class started. The book has been very helpful.
I read Understanding EKGs by the same author prior to reading this book and was able to interoperate basic dysrhythmias. I then read this book and now have a good working understanding of 12 lead EKG interoperation.
There are grammatical errors, I never trust a book that has grammatical errors.
