About the Author
Winn L. Rosch has written about personal computers since 1981 and has penned nearly 1,500 articles about them¿a mixture of reviews, how-to guides, and background pieces explaining new technologies¿published in newspapers, magazines, and on the Web. He holds three patents on computer technologies and has won two awards for his writing. He has served as a contributing editor to more than half a dozen computer magazines (including PC Magazine) and as a technology reporter (now columnist) for the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio's largest newspaper. His books and articles have been reprinted in several languages (among them French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish). Besides writing, Rosch is an attorney licensed to practice in Ohio and holds a Juris Doctor degree. A member of the Ohio State Bar Association, he has served on the association's computer law committee. In other lifetimes, Rosch has worked as a photojournalist, electronic journalist, and broadcast engineer. When deadlines don't loom too close, Rosch has been known to ambush people to collect their images on photographic film, some of whose faces result in oil paintings. Although Rosch has abandoned his efforts at creating a perpetual motion machine (it kept him up at night), he is now putting the finishing touches on his latest creation, the world's first perpetual stillness machine.

There was a lot arcane science surrounding the new technology, and we the end-user, were left to sift through a lot of confusing acronyms and terms that made little sense outside the realm of computing. But we (my fellow computer geeks and I) managed to struggle through, but we still dreamed of a reference book that would be a one-stop guild to the world of personal computer hardware. Then along came "The Winn L. Rosch Hardware Bible"."The Winn L. Rosch Hardware Bible", first released in the early-1980's, is the definitive guild to computer hardware from processors to printer, hard drives to hardware interrupts, memory to mice, from networking the telecommunications, from ZIP drives to Zero Insertion Force sockets, this book covers it all. Now up to the 5th edition, scratch that 6th edition, there has been a copy of "The Winn L. Rosch Hardware Bible", on my reference shelf since the early 1990's.The 5th edition of "The Hardware Bible" is a heavy tome, checking in at some 1,415 pages and 26 chapters. The book also ships with a CDE-ROM which contains the entire book in Adobe .PDF format, as well as a large collection of trail and freeware software."The Hardware Bible" covers everything you will ever need to know about (IBM) personal computers. I bought my first copy on the occasion of building my first computer when I was living in Hawaii back in 1991. I had an old Gateway 2000 i386 machine I bought while I was living in Germany. The computer came complete with Windows 3.1, installed on a 40MB hard drive. I wanted to upgrade to an i486 processor and a larger hard drive, but I was unsure how to go about this seemingly monumental feat. That is where "The Hardware Bible" came in. I read the book from cover to cover and in so doing gained the knowledge necessary to upgrade my computer, by replacing the motherboard, processor, memory and hard drive.A true measure of "The Hardware Bible's" usefulness to me is that I use it to design curriculum and teach A+ classes; the book has every (hardware) piece and aspiring A+ certification seeker could want. In addition the book and accompanying CD-ROM contain a plethora of images for me to use in slide presentations and handouts to the students."The Hardware Bible" also includes a host of lists and tables that present troubleshooting information in an easily referenced format. For instance, the book covers the very tantalizing subject of PC BIOS Interrupt 10(Hex) Functions in a table format. This can be found in chapter 17 Display adapters. There are also a number of other tables dealing with the minutia of display adapters, but this information can come in handy when dealing with older PC systems and adapters, especially when it comes to troubleshooting.It is clear that the author knows his subject well. Winn L. Rosch, a former Photo-Journalist, and licensed lawyer, takes this a step further however by devoting devotes a fair amount of time and text to discussions of common software technologies as they relate to PC's, such as image compression technologies. This is something competing books fail to do."The Hardware Bible" also comes in handy when I want to refresh my memory about a certain subject matter, because the book is that in-depth ands useful. I have been building, maintaining and upgrading my own computers since 1997, and I have had Wynn Rosch's Hardware Bible in my library as an invaluable reference during all that time. I know some people say that the Word of Rosch is not always completely up to date. It may not be, but neither am I. I've seen too many pioneers with arrows in their backs. I never jump at the latest and greatest in computer technology. I wait until new things prove themselves out in usage. This latest edition of the Word is now helping me in my double task of replacing an old, tired HDD and phasing out the cumbersome ZipDrive I have been using for backups. All I need to know is there in black and white just as it always has been. Great book!

In over 15 years of I work I am always looking for new material and books relating to the latest technology both hardware and software.This is the first time I have looked at the Hardware Bible and as a Computer Technical Instructor this book has already come in handy for a couple of A+ classes I am teaching.While the book is not written to any specific exam, I found that is would definitely help with the A+ and CST exams. The author's extensive hardware knowledge is evident throughout the book.One thing that impressed me throughout the book was the author not only gives detailed information about the most current technology, but also gives you a firm background on older technologies as well.While the book is the "Hardware" bible, there is far more than just hardware information, you'll also find TCP/IP and the internet, as well as memory management included in the overall coverage.I found this to be a fairly complete text to work with. You can also register online and find both the 5th and 6th editions available. About the only thing that wasn't included was a cd with hardware utilities, but looking at what you do get this is a minor drawback. Overall this book is a certainly worth the look.

I've been wanting both of her books for awhile now and I finally splurged and got both of them (the Polaroid Manipulations book that concentrates on the SX-70 manip process).When I first flipped through this book I was blown away and amazed by the content. This book is the number one resource for helping you along with your Polaroid transfers and emulsion lifts. It is HIGHLY informative. The author guides you step by step and even provides some background information on how the processed were discovered. She also offers a lot of inspirational material in an advanced techniques section of the book. At the end of the book there are artist galleries with drop-dead-gorgeous work!I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to get into the alternative processes with the Polaroid medium. Don't hesitate... get a copy today!
I wish all 'how to' books were as good as "Polaroid Transfers".Kathleen Thormod Carr knows her stuff. I would venture to say that anyone who reads the book cover to cover, assembles the necessary equipment (not a lot), and spends a rainy day indoors on this project will get good results before the day is through.Just know that although her techniques are obvious and easy to follow, your own polaroid images will have a life of their own.I suspect that 'Carr's First Law' should be that "the worst pictures will transfer easiest". Good luck with your best images.Buy the book. Read it twice. Make some excellent transfers. Impress your friends. :-)

Whenever I get ready to work on Polaroid transfers or lifts, I have this book by my side. I refer to it all the time. I took a class in these processes, but when I get ready to work, this is the book I refer too.Great inspiration and examples are included, but MOST valuable for the step-by-step instructions.
This book made the process look easy and had many ideas of how to do the process and use the process. If you are looking for an artistic view, ideas and concepts to utilize your Polaroid / Fuji Pack Film this book is a must read.

This book could be an effective tool to discuss behavior with toddlers and preschoolers. I read the Kindle edition on my Kindle Fire and it fell short of the mark because the formatting was way off and the pictures displayed as tiny images. Most adults would use this book as a read aloud; the rhyming is not always smooth. Perhaps this is not the case in the print edition.On the other hand, young children will laugh at how young George has a whiny, grumpy, bad-mannered dragon named Joe as a pet and companion. When George decides to misbehave so that Joe can see the error in his ways, it provides a powerful example to show young children how irritating poor behavior appears to friends and family. I would hope that the Kindle edition be cleaned up to make that edition an informative and fun book for three to five year old children.
This is a cute book. My 5 year old quotes it now when he starts getting upset. The only thing I don’t like is that it used the word “fabâ€. My son is learning how to read and it just seemed silly to me to use “fab†instead of “fabulousâ€. I’d rather not have my 5 year old describing things as “fabâ€. Personal preference.
I felt that this ebook was well-written to teach our young ones to learn to have patience and not get angry and fly off the handle when things do not go their way (s) at times by using a pet dragon named Joe Also for using nice sized print that was very easy on o'er eyes and using very bright and beautiful colors that kids really enjoy,do I wish to recommend this for kids ages 3-5 and for five stars. The Angry Dragon is formatted properly so it takes up the entire screen in landscape mode, so is like reading an actual physical open book where you see both the left and right pages at once. The text and illustrations therefore appear on the pages together like they should, unlike a lot of Kindle picture book authors who can't be bothered to take the time to format their work and reading them is like a mess. Some earlier reviews claim the formatting with things such as image size wasn't great, and maybe it wasn't when they read it, but the book displays great now. I always like to take the time to acknowledge those who care enough about their readers and their own work to make sure everyone enjoys it to the fullest potential.The story itself though I didn't think was great. I found the dragon character to be a real jerk and don't really get why the kid would want to be friends with him. If this had been a story where perhaps the dragon looked on as the kid played with other creatures and got teary or something, had a think about it's behaviour, apologized to the kid and begged for a second chance at friendship, then maybe I would have seen the point to it. I also didn't think the kid acted like a kid would either in behaviour or dialogue.
After reading & liking the reviews about this book, ordered it. I was really looking forward to reading it and giving it as a Christmas gift. However, to my surprise, the cover was “The Angey Dragon†but the inside was a completely different story, titled, “The Friendly Flapdoodle.†Not for nothing but I read the story and it was unbelievably stupid.
The illustrations are charming, which is why I gave this book one star. As for the rest of the book . . . the solution offered by this book is a poor lesson for children and not an effective way to deal with an angry friend; the rhymes are often forced; and the rhythm of the verse is awkward. My book-loving preschooler, who picked out this book based on the cover art, lost interest halfway through the book, and he LOVES read alouds. A regrettable purchase.
We like this book! IT's fun, the pictures are fun and my girls like me to read it to them every night before bed. It has a great message that is told in a very simple way. Cute book.
Bought this for my nephews because they are really into dragons. The illustrations were nice but the story was just meh and the punctuation in the book was super messed up and grammatically incorrect. If It wasn’t so close to Christmas I would have returned it and bought something else.

The author went to great lengths in providing crucial and historical evidence of events of Christian white slavery during a time in Europe's and America's history!Charles Sumner provided the list of countries involved in these horrendous acts and was not afraid to list the guilty parties by name.I enjoyed the stories about acts of heroism (Lord Exmouth, Admiral Van de Capellan and John Fox - to only name a few) of the great men involved in trying to liberate the tens of thousands of slaves. Mr. Sumner wrote in some detail how the slaves tried to free themselves.The book is highly informative for any historian and anyone trying to find out about slavery of men or women of any color, religion, or country.On the pages, the ink is somewhat faded (please bear in mind the book was published 1847) in some places or I would have given it a five star but you can still make out a great deal of what was written. A great read!(Where are the movies on this book?)
This is one of Charles Sumner's efforts (published in 1853) to gain support for doing away with slavery in the United States. He is using the outrage about Christians enslaved in the Muslim states of the Barbary Coast to show the inhumanity and un-Christian nature of allowing Black slavery in the South. He presents a powerful history lesson and an even more powerful indictment of slavery anywhere. A very good and powerful book.My only complaint is that Kindle edition as delivered to my original Kindle Fire has no cover art - not even a title page. All I see on my Kindle home page is a blank "cover" with just the percentage I have read. In other words - no title, no author, no subject. And there's no good excuse for this. Interestingly, a download to my newer Fire tablet worked fine.
Wonderful little known history of slavery over the years, with focus on the Christian slaves of the Barbary States of North Africa. I recommend this book for anyone interested in slavery over the years in the world.Senator Charles Sumner was anti slavery, and was the man who was caned until he was unconscience on the floor of the Senate by Representative Brooks of South Carolina the day after he gave an anti slavery speech.This is a very interesting little book where he focused on the white slaves in the North African Barbary states including Morocco, Algiers, Salee, Oran, Tunis, Tripoli and Bacra. He starts out with some history pointing out that slavery had gone on for millennia. People captured in a war were frequently enslaved. Men to do hard work, including rowing gallery ships and the women frequently made concubines. He then addresses the rise of the Islamic religion in North Africa in particular. When Islam expanded via the sword in its early days, it over ran essentially all of Spain. Spain fought for many years to drive the Moors out, and become free of the second class citizenship under Islam. After 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabela re-conquered the last of Spain from the Moors, whom we would now call Muslims, there was an increase in piracy. Ferdinand and Isabela evicted many of the Moors, who moved to North Africa in many cases and became pirates who preyed on Christian ships. The pirates enslaved the crews, in many cases for ransom by their country or family. (He mentions only as a minor note the fact that the Moors were also importing negro slaves from south of the Sahara in much larger numbers than the captured white Christian slaves.) He does an excellent job of tying together slavery over the years. The preying on Christian ships by the Barbary Pirates was a money rising operation against the religious enemies of Islam. At different times the Barbary Pirates preyed on English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, etc. ships, as well as raiding the Christian shores in the Med, and the Atlantic, up as far as Ireland and the English Channel.He also point outs that it continued until the early 1800s, when the US in 1815 sent a squadron over to defeat the pirates get the American captives. However, the real end came in 1816 when the British and Dutch showed up with 5 line of battle ships, 10 frigates, 4 bomb vessels and 5 other small ships, and fired 50,000 shot at Algiers, the largest fortress, and essentially leveled the place. This led to the Barbary Pirates giving up their last of thousands of white Christian slaves and stopping their piracy. He makes the points that negro slavery was ongoing in the world, in particular in the American South and the Barbary Coast at this time, but that it was not addressed when the white Christian slaves were freed.This is a very illuminating book in how Senator Sumner tied together slavery over the ages. The book is extensively foot noted, and reference are provided.
Yes all KINDS of parallels were drawn between white slavery versus black slavery, but I also found the history interesting. This book has piqued my curiosity. North African history in the 18th Century isn't always studied. Give it a try.

I enjoyed this book and the quaint 1850's English. It chronicles the slavery of Christians from Europe by the Barbary states of Africa.
This book provides an excellent level of context for the North African slave trade that was prevalent up through the early 1800's. Though the book focuses on many specific cases of Europeans and several North Americans captured and sold at the slave markets it also points out that Arab and Sub-Saharan slaves were sold in the same way in the same markets without distinction by racial grouping. The North African slave trade in European captives goes back at least to the days of the Roman Empire and only stopped when different nations including the USA, the U.K. and the Dutch sent military vessels to end it in the early years of the 19th century. After that the UK Royal Navy conducted slave patrols around North and West Africa to halt all international slave trading.
