At the beginning of this book George Jones said he would be as honest as his memory would allow. I believe he was. This book at times is almost too painful to read. I was born a Country Music fan. I was lucky enough to see George Jones perform twice alone and once with Tammy Wynette back in the 70's. Now I truly know how lucky I was. I think his wife Nancy was out of her ever loving mind. But I think everyone has a soulmate and when it's your time to meet them, God puts you together. I'm glad that Nancy was able to love George and give him the happiness she could in the time they had. If you want a hard honest look at the life of a recording, touring artist. Buy this book and take notes. If your a fan of this Country Music Legend, this might be a little hard to read. I love the music of George Jones and always will. God Bless Nancy and his children.
Eh, an okay book. You learn more about his younger life than his adult life which appears to have mostly been a haze of drunk and drugged memories. Several times he mentions the singers closest to him, apparently Johnny Cash and Waylon, but one is left with the impression that there was no real camaraderie there, that George simply used and abused them as he did everyone else. One other item that stands out is that George was quite lucky to have never killed anyone, as often as he was shooting his guns (often at people!) while drunk. Still, it is an important tale, a cautionary tale of an enormous talent mostly wasted -- despite the many hits he had.
I have always loved his music. I realized he was a drinker but having several in my family, that was no big deal- except for someone perhaps who lived with him. I always felt people used him and he very likely saw through them. This travelling and the responsibilities for so many people's livelihood could and probably did get to him. Great singer and it was apparent he loved what he did.
I seldom read books because few of them hold my attention strongly enough to interrupt my normal schedule. With "I Live To Tell It All" I truly hated to put it down to go to bed - so I went to bed late. I've long been a George Jones fan. I was aware from all the press he got during his career that he had a hard drinking, drug using, tormented personal life so I was anxious to hear about it from him, the man who lived it. Wow, I had no idea how hard it was. Music, which was what made him tick, turned in to a near prison to him. He did immeasurable damage to himself but the damage others did to him was even worse. His manager tracked him like a hardened criminal, even using a large force of maffia type manhunters - even using helicopters. They basically locked down a complete area of Alabama (I believe it was) looking for him. He was forced to camp in the woods to escape their search because it was so intense - they even had citizens looking for him rather than trying to hide or protect him. One of his manager kept him buried in cocaine in order to control him. Many people in his business life as well as his personal life took advantage of him and lied to him. What a sad way for anyone to live. Music was his life. It also became his captor. Somehow, even though his life spiraled in to total financial and personal devastation, he kept making wonderful music for all of us to enjoy. And somehow, owing to his personal inner strength, and to finally meeting a woman who loved him more than he loved himself, he survived and lived to tell it all to his fans.
This book is so many things to me. I have always loved George Jones. I always knew that he had alcohol and drug problems but I was married to an alcoholic and always felt that i had been through it all. This book surely let me know that I had it easy compared to George Jones and his co-dependents. There were times while reading this book that I broke down and cried. He (Jones) was such a sweet man and he really did not know what he was doing most of the time. In other words, I feel he was very innocent of what he was doing to himself and to others that he loved and that loved him. I could go on and on but no need to do that. It was a wonderful book and probably one of the most truthful biographies that I have ever read. I will be reading it again soon.........
I ordered this book upon hearing of George's death. I've never seen him live and never bought any of his records. Still, I think he had the greatest voice in any genre of music, ever. I agree with George that after the 80's there weren't many noteworthy country artists. If you don't have the look, you'll never make it in the business. Country music isn't country anymore. Miranda Lambert is cute, but she's just a fad that won't be remembered ten years from now. There are no authentic voices out there. I can rarely distinguish one voice from another in todays music. The way they live their over the top lives don't relate to the common working person. George, Merle, Johnny, Hank and Waylon lived what they sang. People that went through the great depression had stories to tell. They were true heroes. George and the others I mentioned told their stories firsthand. They made a lot of money, but that wasn't their driving force. Hard work, broken hearts and the struggle to survive were the roots of the greatest music ever heard. Oh, how I wish those guys would live forever.This book was written in plain country language. And I believe George Jones did the best he could and was totally honest in his telling. He should have died a multi-millionaire, but admits he knew nothing about business, nor any idea how to handle money. I think he died comfortable but not wealthy. He had to work right up to his death to make the money for his cars, houses and past debts. He lived an outrageous life that would have killed most. And that was as compelling as his music. I'm just glad he "lived to tell it all."I hope anyone that loves true country music reads George's account of a poorboy with a magic voice that the world couldn't get enough of.

I'm actually posting this review on behalf of my wife (to my shame I must admit I have not yet read the book myself personally , bad on me especially since I'm a Muslim :( ) ... my wife watches Nouman Ali's lectures all the time on youtube but I bought this for her anyways just in case she liked it anyways... turns out she loves the book despite already having seen so many Nouman Ali lectures :) .... basically, a great gift for the Muslim in your life :) ... if you haven't had a chance to watch Nouman Ali yet (and again to my shame I haven't watched nearly as many of his lectures as I should :( ) check out "amazed by the Quran" on youtube by Nouman Ali (use those search terms)... he gives an extremely short 15 minute series of lectures which even the most time challenged of us can listen to even if it's not all the lectures in one sitting :) ... I HAVE watched those "amazed by the Quran" lectures and they were wonderfully uplifting and spiritually helpful ... I think that watching even one of those will give you a good idea of whether or not you'd enjoy reading this book if you're considering purchasing it for yourself.
Like others have said, this is a collection of Nouman Ali Khan's khutbahs which have been transcribed into a book. If you love his speeches and his preaching style, but have always wanted to see the Arabic written out, then this is a Five Star book for you. However, if you are unfamiliar NAK, and don't read the book in his "voice," then it will seem rambling and poorly written, as the editor did not take many strides to adapt the book into a more literary form. They changed some of the verbs which would indicate that you were listening to a speech, to verbs which match reading a book, but other than that, it is still just a transcription of Khan's speech. He sometimes can change directions or go on a tangent to come back to his original point, which does not work well written out. If the editor had done some more work, I think this issue could have been overcome.One great perk of having his speeches written out though, is that you have time to investigate and fully appreciate the Arabic. Or rather, this is what should be the best part of the book. However, the transcription jumps back and forth between Arabic script and English transliteration of Arabic, which I found confusing. I am student of Arabic, but jumping back and forth made it hard to understand sometimes which word he was referring to from the Qur'anic passage. This is another area that an editor could have been of some help. Maybe including the Arabic script along with the transliterated English inserted into the transcription. Or even better, maybe having a glossary of terms for each chapter to best understand the point that Khan is trying to make. NAK is known for his commentary of the Qur'an, which dwells mostly on revealing meaning through the grammar and syntax of the Qur'an. So I would have appreciated more of that in this book.I enjoyed reading this book, because I enjoy listening to Khan's lectures. However, as some one else pointed out, some of these same lectures are available online (you can check the Amazon preview for a Table of Contents). I'm not sure if everyone will appreciate this book. If you are not familiar with NAK or his speaking style, you should probably just check the lectures out online, unless you just really like reading out transcripts of lectures. In that way, maybe this would be a great resource for deaf readers. All and all, I was excited to see a book by Khan, but wish it had more substance, because as it is, it is not a very valuable addition to my library. I don't think I would re-read it.
I rarely write reviews but this book has particularly driven me out of my comfort zone and has forced me to write a line about it.It’s a masterpiece, if you are stuck at self help section and got gloomy about life then this book can immediately get back you to the right track and ease your burden, if you are stuck with the leap of faith the this book shall lift up your spirit, if you are drowning in the midst of hatred and attitude then this book will help you to love and help you nevigate towards a purpose.. loved it..Ustad Nouman has nailed it..
I like listening to his speech, so I purchased this book. Unfortunately, this is not a book at all. It is the transcription of his speeches. It is good, but it does not give you the same taste that a book gives you. That is why I am giving 3.
As the title suggests, this book touches issues in everyday life. The writing flows smoothly, although I should say this is more like a written version of Khan's sermon. Those who are not familiar with Khan's lecture style might find it slightly off-putting. This book contains interesting insight to the ayahs, I wish I had some basic quranic arabic to appreciate this book more. With less than 200 pages, this book could be finished within days but I'd recommend to take a pause after reading each chapter and give time for reflection.I'd recommend this book for1. those who want light-read-book about life lessons in Qur'an2. those who have basic quranic arabic or just want to appreciate quranic language3. those who've gone through a tiring day

That was a year before I shipped out for Vietnam.A few years after I returned, I remembered his words when we found out he had passed and I bought the book. We had two kids, paycheck to paycheck, and no savings. I read the book and it hit home; hard. Slowly, week-by-week, we started to build savings. Now, we have a good retirement, well off and secure. This book started it off.Easy to read and understand, timeless message. This book should be required reading for all school kids. It doesn't espouse greed like Think and Grow Rich. It simply teaches that you already have the ability to grow your prosperity from what you already have.READ THIS BOOK and change your life forever.
I buy this book by the case and give it to all the young people (14-25) in my neighborhood. It's an easy read and gives seven basic principles on saving and investing money. I was raised on the 10% rule and have passed it on to the next generation. It is written in parable form, so it's interesting as well as instructive. I highly recommend this book of wisdom for the youth in anyone's life.
I've read this book many times and I try to read it every year so as to refresh my memory and ensure my path. When I first read this, it was an amazing epiphany and I immediately took action. I was broke, about to lose my house, and looking for a way out of the hole I'd dug myself into. The rules within this book works well! I live in Hawaii now, in a nice suburban house, without worry of money. I am always surprised when I'm handed my next paycheck because I no longer count the days to each. Many thanks to the writer, the translator, the archeologist, and of course, the Babylonians!
I read this book years ago. As a result I listened to one piece of advice and now will have a comfortable retirement.Because I was a Christian I believed that I should tithe 10% of my income. I was tithing on my net income, not my gross. In my heart I knew that I should be tithing on my gross iincome. After reading this book, I decided that I should tithe on my gross, but in addition I should tithe (10%) to myself as well. That retirement is what got me through the crash in 2008 and has allowed me to purchase a small retirement property.
Just thought I should write this review as a warning to others. The Richest Man in Babylon is one of my favorite books. It's a great "back to the basics" look at finances. When I'm off with my finances, I dig out my copy of this book. I thought about doing a study group with some members of my church. So, I wanted to check this one out because the "Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century" part of the title led me to believe that it would be a more modern version maybe removing the thee's and thou's... kinda like an NIV vs KJV of the Bible. I WAS MISTAKEN!!!It's both taller and wider than my current beat up version but the font they used is soooo small that I couldn't bring myself to make a detailed comparison- unlike the cover and back cover which are huge in comparison. They jammed 160 pages into 88 POORLY!!! I've never sent a book back before, but this one must go back!!!So get the book, but not this version!!!
First off, this was probably the 20th book about (finance, getting rich, making $, etc) I read. That's fine.But for me,This book along with the millionaire mind are head and shoulders the two books that have made the biggest impact on me.
3 stars does not mean it is a bad book. Definitely worth a read, especially if you are interested in personal finance without the droll of a finance textbook. Three stars means that the beginning of the book was far stronger than the end, and after halfway the information started repeating a bit and the anecdotes were not as compelling as the beginning ones. However, this book was definitely unique and a quick read with lots of good information that still holds truth now.
This book should be on the summer reading list for every school. I read this when I was younger, and again recently. I read it to my 8 year old daughter. Sometimes a narrative like this is what people need to really understand things. For example, I could say "use money to acquire assets that will make more money, not liabilities or things that just depreciate." But that's just one sentence, and we might all soon forget it. When you take a set of concepts and put it into a story, it gives people a scaffold to hang their understanding on. That's what this book is. It's been around forever, and it is still highly recommended, and there is a good reason for that.As for this edition, I found it to be fine. I wanted the original text, and this met the criteria.

I love reading this book to my kids. It's sweet to have them cuddle up to me (daddy), read in Spanish, review Spanish vocabulary, and look at the pictures. My children have loved this book since age 1, and even my 7 year old still loves to cuddle up and read it. A classic.
Purchased not the mommy and daddy versions of this book for twins birthday party this weekend. The last page of the daddy book is a misprint and from the "I love my mommy because..." book. Are they all misprinted? I would really like the correct one that says "daddy" at the end.
I used this book for complete a DIY Father's Day gift (idea from Pinterest), and replaced all of the pictures with photos of my husband and son that represented whatever was on the page (i.e. photo of dad lifting up kid for "He is big and strong"). It came out super cute.If you print out 6"X6" photos they fit perfectly, with a few stickers added on the edges to cover some of the larger pictures. You can also print out 4X6 and include a 6X6 background sheet as well.
I bought this book for my husband on behalf of our special needs daughter for father's day. He LOVED it. I saw him getting misty eyed because our daughter can't talk, walk, etc. She's like a baby & she can't buy anything but I wanted to get it for her and I signed her name in it, wrapped it up really pretty and sat it in her lap. He opened it carefully & his eyes got soooo big. Get this beautiful book. It's hardcover and very loving. Something like this will definitely open up the heart of the roughest man, especially if he's a father. I wish there were more saying in the book but the message overall is clear.

Using this to introduce our daughter to Spanish since one set of grandparents only speak Spanish. Very cute and simple to read. Great pictures too! My daughter loves it and dad loves reading them to her. Also helps me out with both English and Spanish words since I don't speak Spanish.
This book is truly great! I also have the "I Love My Mommy Because..." book to go with it, but there's plenty of Mommy books out there. Yes, I truly value the love my kids have for me, but I'm thankful they have a father that loves them just as much as I do. This book is a great representation of the love that my kids have for their Daddy and all he does for them. It's a nice read for my husband to them, and my kids love it when he reads them books. It's a nice gift, and it's one of my kids' favorite books.
we have both the mom and dad versions of this book. they are different. i was afraid the story would be the same in both but one says mom and one says dad. but there are different reasons to love mom and dad in each book. it is a board book so great for my toddler. we love that it has both languages so either my husband or i could read it to our son without having to buy 2 books as we do with so many others.we also like all the animals in the books. it tells you what each animal is called its baby version, e.g. cub. so you can use the book in a variety of ways with your child, e.g. read it, teach the animals or ask him/her to point animals out to you.
Bought this story and I Love My Mommy Because... for a baby shower gift for a couple who will be raising their baby bilingual. The story is beautiful using animals in nature to describe all the things moms and dads do for their children. Having both languages will allow both parents to read to their new baby.

I found this book to be interesting and informative about Laura ingalls Wilder's life. The way the writer pointed out bits of history was helpful in getting idea of how things were done in that time. I enjoyed reading this book.
This is a good book to read aloud to children or people who are not familiar with Laura. Good pictures.
Anything about Laura Ingalls Wilder is good, and this book is authentic, too.I loved it, and would recommend it to others.

I'm going to sum up this book as succinctly as possible:I'm a professional bartender that has remodeled his kitchen to be as much a chemistry lab as it is a place of cooking. I have a HUGE library dedicated to bartending books... in addition to cooking, gastro, flavor-profiling, pairing, etc. I love the food and beverage industry, and I believe that a bartender is as responsible for creating an enjoyable meal as a chef. My personality is front-of-house while my mentality and drive (and sometimes my personality, too) is back-of-house.This book is perfect for people like me that are always on the look-out for ways to bring new techniques to their libations, not to mention a thorough explanation for why things work they way they do... which is wonderful for inspiration.However, this book is also perfect for someone that simply wants to know how to make the magic happen at home.1) Dave Arnold is a genius. Certifiably, not hyperbole. It takes a unique and gifted soul to bring this level of thoughtfulness to his trade, and a generous spirit to pass along just enough of that information to make someone incredibly dangerous if they're on a first-name basis with their welding shop (like me: former iron-worker). What he has to say about everything is worth paying attention to... especially the giant chapter on ice.It's funny to say it, but embracing 25 pages on solid water has made me a much better bartender than the hundred of other pages detailing elevated techniques.2) Outside of understanding how ice and dilution actually work to make or break a cocktail, there is very little in this book that pertains to bringing an extra bit of flair and wonder to your bar. Tossing bottles is for kids that work at TGI Fridays. Real flair is about making the creation of something that's liquid unforgettable look effortless.This book is all about preparation. The first part is education. The second part is experimentation. The third part is learning how to set everything up in advance so that the actual mixing, building and shaking is as smooth and consistent as possible.3) This book will force you to be a better bartender. I don't care if you're a professional or home-based booze-hound: this book will force you to elevate your knowledge and ability just from the kind of humble enthusiasm Arnold communicates for the bartending trade.Not only am I a better, more educated bartender capable of applying the various techniques and technologies discussed in Liquid Intelligence to the recipes bound within it, I've also gained the confidence to seek out my own individuality using these lessons.I have a ten-pound bottle of liquid nitrogen in my kitchen, now... and I'm sourcing a carbonator.And then there's the red-hot poker I know just enough about electrical engineering and fabrication to injure myself perfecting.4) This book has made such an impact on me that I've begun carrying my own tools to my job. I immediately knew which one she was talking about and she was gracious enough to give me her copy.  I am a more fulfilled woman today, with this book in my hands.In every aspect of Liquid Intelligence, Dave Arnold's character is clear.  He is a scientist who puts on the garb of bartender.  He is a perfectionist in an artists game.  In my mind, there is a range of cocktail artists... on one end you have the artist, someone who pours until the cocktail is 'right', someone who makes a different cocktail every time.  On the other end of the spectrum is the scientist, people like Dave Arnold who practice that the 'right' cocktail is the perfectly balanced one, a blend that can be found through practice and repetition.  People like this create as much consistency as can every be had in the cocktail industry.  On both ends of the spectrum boundaries are pushed in ways the average person could never anticipate.Liquid Intelligence begins you with over 30 pages on measurements, units and equipment.  He then has 25 pages on Ice.  Part 3: New Techniques and Ideas involves things like nitro-muddling, pokers, iSi Whipper, and fat washing.  This is not a beginners cocktail book.  This is not a home-bar cocktail book.  This book is by a professional, for professionals.  While Dave Arnold's writing style is extremely accessible and he does not delve into too much scary molecular science, if read as a beginner or an average home enthusiast, one of two things will happen: 1. you will fall in love with it and but entirely too many things you don't need and constantly be asking for more than the average bar can supply or 2.  you will think cocktail making is some inaccessible science, bordering on wizardry and that you could never hope to be a part of it.  I fall into the first category and freely declare myself to be an impractical person when it comes to the things I want for my bar.  My friend falls into the second category and while I am glad that it led this book to me, I am also saddened by the fact that she felt she was unable to continue on a cocktail journey.  Her husband is a chef and she is a bookworm with a great deal of spirit... there is no reason she cannot explore complex cocktails at home and I have no alternative but to believe that it is this book that deterred her.I am not driven the way Dave Arnold is. His focus and consistency are not my style, but I still found this book incredibly interesting.  It also was extremely helpful for establishing 'Best Practices' in my opinion.  There are many people out there who will be happy to tell you that shaken is better or stirred is better but Dave Arnold took the time to break it down to what is actually happening in the glass.  For those things that we can do at our limited bars, it is best to do them as well as is possible.  Many of the small things I do throughout the day are with his advice in mind, such as icing a drink after all ingredients have been added or slapping mint instead of tearing it.  This book is also jam-packed with pictures for reference.  Arnold ensures that every explanation is as thorough as if you were sitting in a classroom.  He explains why he does everything, which is incredibly helpful for the bartender who is looking to bring a new elevation to their cocktails.Overall, I love this book.  I dream enthusiastically about the day I get to go to Booker & Dax and less enthusiastically about the morning afterwards.  If you are thoroughly entrenched in the alcohol business, either as a home enthusiast or as a bartender/mixologist I recommend it with passion.  If you are not thoroughly entrenched, if you are still hesitant when walking down the liquor isle or nervous when going on shift... maybe wait a while.  Read some other books first, talk to some other bartenders and do your own research.  This is an experience that is best done at the right time, not the closest time.

Although the book was directed toward more experienced coaches, I feel like it will be invaluable to me as a beginner coach to use as a resource and idea manual. I loved all of the examples, the organization, and the way Chad just got to the bottom line with all of the techniques, tools, and ideas. I especially liked section 3 where Chad spoke of 7 language elements we could use for powerful coaching. This opened my mind to all kinds of things I could do to enhance the coaching process and become a better coach. I will keep referring back to this book while I'm coaching to come up with new ideas that will help my clients.
Chad Hall does a great job of helping us coaches think about the language we are using in the coaching relationship. I love the way he reminds us that learning a language takes time and energy. Coaching is not just renaming our present conversations. Also, he adds a great matrix to discuss coaching conversations and gives several elements to think about in our language development. This book is short, to the point, and worthy addition to your coaching library.
Chad Hall does a great job of describing and applying some advanced coaching skills. His style of writing is engaging and humorous and his content is excellent. Although at the beginning he warns beginning coaches away from the content, I think it is a great book for all levels of coaches who aspire to grow to be able to see what coaching CAN be and SHOULD be if done with skill, experience and insight. Took about an hour to read (and I’m not the fastest reader!). Keep these books coming Dr Hall. They are a great resource for equipping coaching excellence!
