Who Was Coretta Scott King? It was a cool and drizzly day in early spring 1968. Coretta Scott King stepped off an airplane in Memphis, Tennessee. Days earlier, on April 4, her husband, Martin Luther King Jr., had been shot and killed downtown in the city. Coretta was now a widow at age forty-one. She was heartbroken and tired, but determined. Martin was the leader of the civil rights movement to give black Americans the same rights as white people. He had planned to lead a protest march in Memphis. Now he was gone. But the march was still being held. Why? Martin would have wanted it. Coretta knew that. And she knew she had to be there, too. She’d always been by his side when he needed her. And he needed her now to carry on. Some friends urged Coretta not to go. They feared her life would be in danger. She didn’t listen. At the march, Coretta and three of her children linked arms at the front of the crowd. And they began to walk. The protesters—as many as forty-two thousand by one estimate—marched for about one mile. People lined the street as they passed. No one cheered or waved or shouted. They were too sad. At city hall, there were many speeches about Martin. Then came Coretta’s turn. She talked about his life as a husband and father. Finally, she said, “How many men must die before we can really have a free and true and peaceful society? How long will it take?” After, her oldest daughter said, “Mommy, you were real good.” Coretta hoped her presence had given people strength. Being there gave Coretta strength, too. She felt more determined than ever to carry on the cause of civil rights. She’d always been Martin’s partner in the struggle for equality. Martin believed that he and Coretta “walked down this path together.” That was true. Coretta Scott King had believed in peace and justice—right from the very beginning. Chapter 1: The Scott Family Coretta Scott was born on April 27, 1927, outside of Marion, Alabama, in the small town of Heiberger, Alabama. Sometimes the area is called the Black Belt because of its rich black soil. But in the 1800s, the term had another meaning. It referred to the black slaves who had once worked the cotton fields on large farms called plantations. Their lives were harsh, filled with backbreaking work and cruel treatment. Slaves were considered property. Like a horse or a piece of furniture. They had no rights. White owners could whip them, sell them, or work them to death. After the Civil War ended in 1865, all slaves were freed. Like many others, Willis Scott stayed right where he was. In Alabama. In time, Willis managed to buy his own land. Over the years, generations of Scotts farmed those fields, working hard and raising families. In 1920, Coretta’s father, Obadiah “Obie” Scott married Bernice McMurry. They built a small, plain home with two rooms: a kitchen and a bedroom. Soon, they had a family: Edythe, Coretta, and Obie Jr. Slavery had ended over sixty years ago. But life was still difficult for African Americans. In Alabama, and other parts of the South, black people were segregated from white people. That means laws kept them separated. Obie worked at a sawmill, where logs were cut into boards for building. By the time Coretta was born, he had saved enough to buy a truck. Now he could work for himself, hauling trees. Then, in 1929, when Coretta was a toddler, the Great Depression hit. It was a time of great hardship throughout the United States. Millions of people lost jobs. And Obie lost work. The Scott home only had a fireplace for heat and no running water or electricity. But the Scotts got by. They ate vegetables from their own garden, and had eggs from their own chickens. Everyone in the family worked hard. Coretta didn’t mind. She liked being busy. As soon as she could walk, she’d follow Grandfather Scott to the fields to help. At around age six, Coretta started tending the family garden. By ten, she was working in the cotton fields. She felt proud of her cotton-picking skills. Strong and strong-willed, Coretta boasted she could pick cotton faster than any boy her age. Coretta had fun, too. She was a tomboy. She loved being outdoors. Nothing scared her—not hitting wasp nests or baiting fishhooks with worms. Indoors, music filled the Scott home. Coretta’s parents had one of the first Victrolas, an early record player. They owned books, too. Her parents read nursery rhymes and fairy tales to Coretta, Edythe, and Obie again and again. Faith was important to the Scotts, and much of Coretta’s life centered around church. Every Sunday, men put on suits and women wore their best hats and dresses. The Scott children had to walk four miles to go to Sunday school. Grandfather Scott would open the service by singing a hymn. Coretta loved the music. It all gave Coretta a sense of pride and history. But there was a whole world outside Heiberger. It was filled with different rules for black people and white people. In elementary school, Coretta saw that for the first time.

Poorly arranged. Difficult for students to read if looking for information specific to Scott-King. Too much historical background information (albeit interesting) about the times which interrupts chronological facts about Scott-King. I purchased this for middle school, but found that weaker students were distracted by the additional information which could have been offered as foot notes or in a separate section.
I think this is a fun book and it’s what I keep as one of my favorite black history book collection.

Frankie Manning spread swing dancing's popularity throughout the world while touring with Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in the 1930s and '40s. Dance writer and swing dancer Millman conducted extensive interviews with Manning for a vivid account of his career. Manning became a star in Harlem's popular Savoy Ballroom with his unique style, including dancing at a sharp angle to the ground like a track runner, speed and musicality. In a dance competition, Manning astonished the crowd with the first-ever Lindy aerial, or air step (where the man sends his partner flying). Later Manning toured with jazz greats such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and performed in several films, including Everybody Sings with Judy Garland. After a long hiatus from dancing, he was a consultant for Spike Lee's Malcolm X and coached a new generation of dancers in the swing dance revival of the '80s and '90s. While the first-person accounts of Manning's life capture his vibrancy, humor and charm, the narrative is interrupted by short sections of historical notes; their formality is at odds with Manning's ease and charisma. I'm a swing dancer (lindy hopper) and this book was so helpful and interesting. I didn't know about a lot of the origins of phrases we use now, or realize that certain people knew each other. The writing style is friendly and engaging; I would probably enjoy this book even if I weren't a dancer.

I have been a student and admirer of Frankie Manning's ever since my first dance lesson with him almost ten years ago. Frankie is a legendary dancer, an innovator and pioneer in the dance form called "Lindy Hop" that started in the Jazz Age in the streets of Harlem and continues to this day in clubs, schools and dancehalls all over the world.I've been hearing Frankie tell his inspiring stories for a long time now, but never with this rich detail and the larger historical context provided by Ms. Millman to back them up.From his days as a child at rent parties to the heyday of the Savoy Ballroom to performing internationally with the dance troupe Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, you follow the exciting growth of a young dancer. Then we follow Frankie into the war years and his dropping out of the swing world for several decades. Fortunately in the 1980s, Frankie is coaxed out of retirement and continues to do this day to teach and inspire others about this wonderful dance.Throughout it all, you cannot help but be touched by Frankie's grace, style and humor in navigating tumultuous, often racially-charged situations. I want to be Frankie when I grow up.A great read for anyone interested in African-american history, dance, or jazz.
I was fortunate to have met Frankie twice before I read the book. This gave me the face and voice to put the words to. As I read, it was as if Frankie was there talking to me with all the wit , humor and charm he has in person. Frankie's excitement in telling his stories makes you wish you could have been there with him. Frankie does a wonderful job of taking you through his life experiences in a way that you just can't put the book down. For me the book is about much more than dancing Lindy Hop. It's about how to live your life which is finding your passion and becoming the best, not to become famous or rich, but because it gives you purpose and that gives others inspiration. Thanks for putting Frankie's life into words. He is someone I wish my kids, grand kids and all future generations could have met. I hope this book soon becomes a movie so all the world can once again see Frankie Manning on the dance floor.
Certainly, every Lindy Hopper must read this book. But I think it's a beautiful and important book for people outside of the swing dance community too. Frankie Manning was an unsung hero. He and the other members of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers helped were instrumental in a dance that shaped and influenced our culture and our history.
This is a book every Lindy Swing Dancer should read. If you love Lindy, you should know the history, and most of all, know who Frankie Manning is!!!! I've bought one for each of my dance helpers as gifts of thank you. I got mine the day it was released!

Great book for my son's class!! Saved me $$$
I had to use this for a class. I don't normally write reviews, but I must say this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever used. Everything is over-described, repeated, re-defined, and exhausting. The only thing I can think of is that the author was paid by the page. If you can avoid this book, I would. There has got to be something out there that isn't as dense, boring, and over-contrived.

Interesting story- the first two acts of adolecense and train hopping were intense and interesting.But God, once he arrives in America, everything goes downhill. Sonia Nazario is probably giving the actual description of what happened, and what reality is like, but it was a really slap-in-the-face third act.SPOILERS....Ok so once he gets to America, he picks up different blue collar jobs which is fine and all, but quickly becomes an alcoholic/druggie who is abusive and irrational. He becomes the exact stereotype of people who don't want illegal immigrants in the country, by freeloading off the welfare system essentially. I bought this book years ago so I can't remember exactly everything, but it still infuriates me that this was supposed to be a book that would let you see "the other side" of these issues. The first 2/3 of the book make you emphasize with the kid, but then throws it away and confirms the stereotype of the lazy/dangerous/freeloader immigrant that I don't even agree with.Do yourselves a favor; when he gets into America, put the book down, and walk away.
I learned so much from this book. I had a hard time reading it at first, but became very interested from the sociological viewpoint when the author explained how the children who had taken the train, and their mothers felt about each other after years of separation. I was also interested in the interviews at the end with Enrique, and with the author, Sonia Nazario. I got a mental picture of immigration in our country which is every bit as profound a migration as is happening in Europe with the war in Syria bringing more immigrants than they can handle. The immigration to our country is also similar in numbers seeking asylum. I hope that we can welcome our natural immigrants as people who will enrich our society, rather than hinder it. Californians have accepted and assimilated immigrants better and longer than many other states. It can be done.
I found "Enrique's Journey" to be one of those books that is hard to put down. It is very well written, comprehensive, and tells the story in such a way that the reader sees more than one person's perspective. For instance, when Lourdes initially explained her reasoning for leaving her children behind (extreme poverty etc), it made sense despite the fact that most mothers here could not imagine having to make such a choice. For young Enrique, however, all the poverty was difficult yes, but losing his mother during his childhood was a loss that he didn't see as "worth it" and it created emotional scars that are likely long lasting. I have never been one that was against immigrants--although I did feel that they should just go through the process legally! It is not that straightforward it turns out. The countries put many barriers in the way to achieving a legal and safe immigration process--some of those barriers for good reasons, and some only perpetuate the bias against those who may look, speak and act differently than we do here in the United States. This book is an excellent read about what Mexican, Central American, and South American immigrants to the United States go through: their living conditions in their own countries, the struggles and tragedies they endure to come to a better way of life, and the continuing struggles once they reach our country. It definitely made me more aware of the entire situation. I am passing it on to my daughter. She is contemplating using it for a book club read.
I cannot write enough good things about this book. This book is another example of my conviction that only seasoned journalists should be allowed to write and publish books. Like William Rempel's book At the Devil's Table, Sonia Nazario's fine book has pulled together a myriad of relevant details and important facts in order to deliver a flawless performance telling the story of not only Enrique but the thousands of other children who leave Central American countries every year embarking on the dangerous journey that takes them though Mexico searching for their parents who left to start a better life in the US. I am not a particularly fast reader, but the unfortunate problem with books like this is that they are so compelling, gripping, and well-written that you cannot put them down, blowing through the entire book until you no longer have a good book to read. The author covers the subject in depth and breadth and suggests some solutions, although I suspect these are intractable problems that will always be with us.
Excellent book about a 12 year old boy from Honduras who sets out on his own to find his mother in the U.S.It is a true story, written by a journalist, who interviewed him and visited all the places along the way. His plight in crossing Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico and all the suffering, hunger, beatings, assaults that he experienced along the way left me speechless and gave me a better understanding of what the immigrants trying to cross into the U.S. go through. Enrique never gives up in spite of being caught many times and being sent back to Honduras. He tries again and again because he misses his mother who left him and his sister with their grandmother when Enrique was 4 years old. She left seeking work as a domestic in the U.S. in order to be able to send money back home so that Enrique and her sister could buy shoes so they could walk several miles to school.

This is an overall decent product, but because of the reliance students place on Gilbert's being superb, mistakes should not be allowed for.1) The capsule summary clearly misses important info that you would want in the capsule, some of which is captured in the full text, some of which isn't2) The full text has clear missing info when checked against the UCC. I am referring to testable material.The examples/context in the text are also lacking.The one positive about this book is the organizational structure. Overall, its decent to use, but can be a pitfall if relied upon.
I purchased this outline about six weeks before my secured transactions final. I wish that I had purchased it at the first of the semester because it provided a very good summary of Article 9 and related portions of the bankruptcy code and other related statutes. This book made the subject much easier to understand than the UCC does on its own. It also has a reference table that corresponds with several of the most commonly used text books on the subject. I'll reserve total judgment until after I receive my grade, but I'd say that I'm glad I purchased it and I'll be looking to gilbert for other subjects in the future.
This book explains UCC Article 9 Commercial Law cases in an concise and easy to understand fashion and allows students to see the reasoning behind the high court cases.
This commercial outline was the perfect review for my secured trans class. The organization of the book was great, and I liked how it broke down topics in a clear and understandable manner. While it certainly doesn't cover all of the intricacies in article 9 (still have to look at the code), it does a good job of showing the bigger picture and serves as a great review.

One of the things I have always liked about Mike is that he is not a traditional government bureaucrat as he often refers to throughout the book. He is an excellent writer and draws the reader in from an early stage, during those meetings with Vladimir Putin where he accuses Ambassador McFaul of directly of fomenting revolution against him you feel as if you are in the room with him. Mike also does a great job of providing not only his career context but a broader historical context that incorporates the post World War II and Cold War international order and clearly lays out the steps to how Russia got be where it is today under Putin and his vital role in it. He covers everything from his time as a student in the former Soviet Union to Donald Trump and election meddling, it is a great read!
This is an excellent account of the events in the US -Russia relationship, written by one of the principal actors in that relationship. McFaul stepped out of a long academic career as a Russia expert to work for Obama’s campaign and the White House as a Russia advisor before becoming the US ambassador to Russia.The book is a reminder that seven years ago, the US enjoyed good and productive relations with Russia under Medvedev. McFaul is able to walk the reader through the long series of events that took us from that relationship to the contentious and difficult one we have now.The book is also a fascinating inside look at how foreign policy is made and how an ambassador does his job.
It is entirely clear why Russia, now run by the autocratic Putin hated America, its democracy, and subverted the norms of international behavior after reading McFaul’s masterpiece. From the Georgian war and annexation of Crimea, Putin clamors for the perceived glory of the Soviet past and will stop at nothing in his attempts to undermine his adversaries. His abuse of power and destruction of his enemies, by whatever means to preserve his kleptocratic Oligarchy undermine the safety and security of the entire free world. Were it not for Russian intervention in the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections, the sanctions would be far more severe. The murders of Boris Nemtsov, Sergei Magnitsky, Alexander Litvenenko, Anna Politkovsnaya, amongst 36 other men and two women opposed to Putin and the two nearly fatal attacks on Vladimir Kara-Muza and Alexei Navalney point to a mad man who will stop at nothing to hold onto power. Even two linked to the Steele dossier, Oleg Erovinkin and Alex Orono point to “inconviences†for Putin. This book is a fine companion to Gary Kasparov’s Winter is Coming, Malcolm Nance’s Plot to Hack America, Isikov and Korn’s Russian Roulette, Bill Browder’s Red Notice and James Comey’s A higher Loyalty. The harassment of Mcfaul and his children during his ambassadorship to Russia and the devastating impact of Putin and his internet trolls and bots on the foundation of American democracy paint a very dark portrait of Putin locked in the Soviet past and resentful toward all after it’s demise. Mcfaul provides a clear-eyed view of the true, but unrealized potential of the Russian Reset and the primary person responsible for its failure, not Mcfaul, Clinton, nor Obama, but Vladimir Putin himself.
A little ‘full disclosure’ may help to explain this reviewer’s critique of this work. I developed an interest in Communism and in the Soviet Command Economy in the years of intense anti-communism in the 1950’s and 60’s and majored in Comparative Economic Systems specializing in Eastern Europe because I wish to see through the prevailing wisdom of the time critically. I hoped not to judge but to understand the why and wherefore of what was developing in that region, the underlying ideology a given, neither a ‘threat’ nor a ‘promise;’ the Soviet Union the prevailing model. To find a publication that moves into the present of a non-Soviet democratic Russia – exciting.Michael McFaul’s love is ‘Liberal Democracy’ a somewhat fey item immersed in mythology sometimes reducible as in Russia and elsewhere to “electoral†democracy with uncertain outcomes.*The book is a loose treatment of Russia in the post Soviet period centering on McFaul’s experiences as a participant and witness of the Washington foreign-policy establishment up close. A tragic mistake.The result of America’s desire to remake Russia was to create a broken economy of Crony-Capitalism with Chubais becoming one of the richest men in Russia, joined by other oligarchs grabbing what they could. They live on, those who have not crossed Putin. **It was not Communism not Socialism but Capitalism to the delight of Washington. Michael McFaul’s telling of that story is that it is democratic; there are elections, a parliament and so far term limitations but not (yet?) ‘Liberal Democracy.’Looking at results independent of overlaying ideology I see little too cheer regarding Reset. Elyse Zorn Karlin, curator of Maker & Muse, is a jewelry historian and co-director of the Association for the Study of Jewelry & Related Arts. She is freelance curator and author of several books on historical jewelry. Emily Banis Stoehrer is the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator of Jewelry at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She was the co-curator of Hollywood Glamour: Fashion and Jewelry for the Silver Screen (2014) at the MFA. Sharon Darling is a retired curator and museum director with a special interest in Chicago decorative arts. She curated the seminal exhibition Chicago Silver and authored the accompanying book, which presented new research on the Chicago Arts and Crafts movement. Jeannine Falino is an independent curator, a museum consultant, and an adjunct curator at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. She was co-curator of the recent exhibition Gilded New York: Design, Fashion & Society (2013) at the Museum of the City of New York. Yvonne Markowitz is the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. We went to the Dreihaus Museum in Chicago for this exhibit and this book was on sale there in the gift shop. It's a nice reminder of our day downtown and this glorious house turned museum. Very good narrative accompanies the outstanding photographs. I was inspired to see the actual exhibition at the Driehaus Museum in Chicago. I learned so much about this time period and many women jewelers of the era.
