Many Christians struggle with assurance in many ways. Some struggle with it because they do not feel saved. Others because they have a sin that they keep repeating after asking God for forgiveness and repenting from it. Still they are some that struggle with it after a sermon they heard from their pastor which promoted legalism rather than grace. Can a Christian know they are saved? How can we have assurance we are saved? This is what Greg Gilbert covers in his latest book, Assured. In this book, he gives our four sources of assurance based on the Word of God: The gospel of Jesus Christ. The promises of God. The witness of the Spirit. The fruit of obedience. The gospel is the message that God has saved sinners from their sin and has given them eternal life. In His Word, God has promised that the ones who are His will never be forgotten or let go despite out sins. The witness of the Spirit is God's Spirit testifying with our spirit that we are His children as taught in Romans 8. The fruit of obedience is our outward expression of our love for God as we seek to do what pleases Him. Jesus said the one who loves Him, is the one who obeys Him (John 14:21). At the end of book, Gilbert addresses besetting sins. Those are the sins that we seem to not get rid of no matter how mature we are in the faith. Gilbert tells his readers while it is discouraging that these sins are still within us, we must not lose heart. This is not an indication that we have lost our salvation. Jesus promised that no one, not even ourselves, can snatch us from the Father's hand. Finally, Christians should always strive for assurance. The way to do that is to be constantly reminded of the promises of God in the gospel. We must also do the things that please God and not walk in this journey alone, which means Christians are to be faithful church members. Get together with a family believers that will walk with you and you walk with them in our journey to be more like Jesus. Greg Gilbert has been one of my favorite writers for some time. I have enjoyed every book he has written and Assured is no exception. The book is short and easy to read that will be a great tool to go through a fellow believer who is struggling with assurance of their salvation. This is will also be good for you if you are struggling with assurance as well.

Questions like these and others are what Greg Gilbert answers in a helpful and winsome way in his latest book, Assured.What I enjoyed most about this work is Gilbert’s constant, clear focus on the gospel of the Lord Jesus. Unlike many authors who drive people only to check for good works to find salvation, Gilbert urges readers to focus strongly on the gospel first. The first question that a doubting person should ask is whether or not they believe the truth of the gospel. Do you believe in Christ? Do you know of your own sin? Do you believe that Jesus died to pay for your sin and rose again? Do you desire to surrender your life to Jesus in faith? Such questions are more important than other measures that often leave us doubting.Gilbert is not at all promoting an easy believism in this work. On the contrary, he is quite clear that genuinely saved people will have lives that show that genuine faith. The point that Gilbert is strongly making, however, is that our focus should be far more on Christ than on self as we seek to be able to rest in God’s grace.In this work, Gilbert will deal with the issue of assurance from a variety of angles. Gospel is first and foremost, but the author does not ignore the witness of the Spirit, good works, or the promises of God. He also addresses several mistakes that people often make that make assurance more difficult. Gilbert does not ignore the big problem of besetting sins but deals with the concept in a biblical and pastoral way.I read through this book quite quickly, and I found it both helpful and enjoyable. This would be a great book to work through with a friend who is struggling with assurance, or even for you to read if you have your own doubts. It also might be a helpful tool for a short Sunday School series or home study.Note: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for agreeing to post an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I have an individual in my congregation that struggles with this very topic. I decided to read this book in hopes that I would be more equipped to walk with him through this season of life. The arguments that this man is using are the exact arguments that Greg Gilbert answers in this book. I am excited to be able to share with him this book and go through it together. As I was reading I was filled with joy at the beauty of the gospel that the author displayed. My eyes were constantly cast onto the majesty of our savior. This is a space mission to find a known but unknown alien race called the Volcryn. They are known on paper and mouth to mouth folklore only. No one in present memory has ever seen one or it’s starships. The Volcryn are only superstition and legends. Some ancient races think they may have been or are still God or Gods. The whole team is put into place to search for, and find these aliens and make first contact. The interaction between the crew is interesting, but the interaction with the crew and the captain of the Nightflyers is fascinating and bizarre. The captain is a very strange and arrogant person. The 5 women, 4 men crews jobs, background and personality traits seem to be lacking due to the fact no one knew each other before this mission. They are learning and making it up as they go along. There is however some major problems on this ship, someone or something is killing the crew. The paranoia, fear and anger builds within the crew. There are some great twists and turns. This is a fast and good read, I enjoyed it.
George R. R. Martin had this idea that science fiction should have its horror classics. First off, science fiction does have its classic horror representatives. Remember Frankenstein? But moreover, any genre can support horror. Think of the great horror stories in classic literature - Turn of the Screw, for one. The horror initiates in the personalities of the characters. So, in addition to having a good, strong plot you have to have well developed characters. This isn't the case here. The characters act inappropriately (engaging in light banter after horrific events, for example) and their dialogue is unconvincing. One of the main characters (d'Branin,the brain), included the phrase "my friend" at least once in every sentence he spoke - kind of maddening after a while. So all in all, it wasn't very effective in getting any synergy between the two genres.
I was familiar with Martin's work because of the HBO series based on his acclaimed fantasy saga 'A Song of Ice and Fire' so I knew that there would be twists and turns. However, these aren't what you'd expect. Written in a more direct and simpler style than ASOIAF, 'Nightflyers' isn't packed with vivid descriptions of the dark entities haunting our characters. And that's good because otherwise, it would spoil the surprise. That being said, fans of cosmic horror and mystery will enjoy this book and the madness experiences by each character as they come to a realization that (like in many Lovecraftian tales) is too much for them to bear.The story plays out like a haunted house in space. While not being as long as his other stories, Martin have us multifaceted characters that we can like and dislike at times.This is also a cautionary tale where we are reminded of humanity's inner demons, and how sometimes it is not aliens we should be wary of.
Not at all what I was expecting, but very good nonetheless. It kept me guessing all the way throughout. I even stayed up until I only had an hour until it was time to get up for work reading.
This is a solid collection of 1970's science fiction from George R. R. Martin. I found all the stories enjoyable, especially the title novella.Nightflyers--A group of scientists are tracking the oldest known alien vessel through deep space. When they begin to die one by one, they blame their enigmatic captain. This is an outstanding character-driven piece with strong science fiction and horror elements. (It was made into a forgettable 1980's movie, then again into an even more forgettable cable television series in 2018.)Override--In the far future, a miner controls a team of animated corpses to dig for valuable swirlstones. However, when a business rival uses an override device to usurp his control, his day at the office takes a turn for the worse--he must fend off a zombie attack. This is one of three corpse handler stories the author wrote. This one had a strong premise, but the idea would not reach its full potential until "Meathouse Man".Weekend in a War Zone--This story posits a near future where people pay to fight in wars on the weekend. It's all fun and games, but the bullets and the deaths are real. This is a decent entertainment but feels slightly derivative."And Seven Times Never Kill Man"--An excellent portrait of two cultures at war with one another. One is a group of humanoid settlers who follow a militaristic form of Christianity warped by centuries of intergalactic conflict. The other is a primitive tribe that exalts art and pacifism. The author purposefully leaves many questions unanswered, but this story defies the easy answers and still has enough meat on the bone to satisfy.Nor the Many-Colored Fires of a Star Ring--Kerin and Jenny are researchers on a star ring, a ship whose purpose is to temporarily open a wormhole to allow colony ships to pass through. The Black Door station opens onto an uncharted vacuum that is an enigma to science. Perhaps they are on the far side of the universe where the light of the Big Bang has not yet reached. Perhaps they have been flung into the far past, pre-creation, or the far future after the universe has collapsed onto itself. They are experimenting to create a sustaining wormhole, but when they lose control of the energy within the vortex, they might just initiate a new act of creation--or destruction--with unpredictable consequences. This is a philosophical story full of grandiose ideas, part of the author's early Thousand Worlds series.A Song for Lya -- Two psychics travel to an world much older than earth to investigate why humans are being drawn towards an alien religion that always culminates in suicide. This is a strong story, with an outstanding premise built around two questions: "What is true love?" and "Does human individuality create an inherent sense of isolation?" My only complaint is that it drags on a bit too long with too much repetition. Won a 1974 Hugo Award.

Ray comes across someone down on their luck one night and takes her to ER to be checked out. Sylvia is actually a doctor whose brand new ex just left her, without ID, money or extra clothing. This story has the suspense element and starts up pretty quickly. Much of the story is between these two, and her getting over her brother’s death years ago, or the guilt thereof and the suspense angle of who could be after her. We get to see the other Macalister siblings and spouses in this one too, though a minor part. Easy to get into and keep the pages turning.
Ray rescues Sylvia thinking shes a drunk rather than a women who slipped in puddle of beer and was stranded by her ex boyfriend . Sylvia carries immense guilt for her brother's death and can' t believe someone as wonderful as Ray wants her. Alexa weaves a love story filled with our need to rely on the Lord and accept His forgiveness and trust He will guide us if we listen. Can't wait for Elizabeth's story.
After reading the first 2 books in the series, I couldn't wait for this one to come out. It was incredible! I am not normally a big fan of suspense, but I do like how Alexa handles it in her stories.
All the books in this series were wonderful. After the first one on Melinda, I had to read the others and I must admit that the books were all interesting. I wish they were longer though with a little more suspense.
A great book that kept me wondering what was coming next. DR. Sylvia Barron was stranded at a gas stop by her boyfriend and she doesn't have her purse or clothing. Then she falls in front of store and gets hurt plus lands in beer.Ray Macalister a nurse that was there came to her rescue and took her to the hospital. He took her back to his place because she had no where to go. His sisters who was in the last two books were not happy. They didn't trust her because of the way she looked.The story goes on with them becoming friends and Sylvia opening up to Ray about her past which she hasn't done before to anyone. Mean while someone is out to hurt her. Sylvia is sad about her past and trying to work through it an Ray is trying to help her. Showing that there is a person who cares and helping her to get back to trusting God and seeing He was with her all along.It gets very interesting when they keep seeing a black car and she gets threats on her life. I am not going to tell you more for I don't want to tell the wonderful story. All I can say is only always trust in God.Enjoy your read for this is a wonderful book.
Alexa Verde’s book Seasons Of Amor:Ray is a amazing man who is always helping people in need. When he leaves the gas station he is shocked to see the lady on the ground moaning. Sylvia can’t believe that Kent would just take off and leave her stranded. When she falls in a muddy pool of beer she can’t get up. Sylvia can’t believe the way Ray just picks her up out of the mud to help her. The characters in this book are all very special people who feel like your family. You won’t be able to stop reading this book. This book is truly a wonderful inspirational story. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.
Both elements combine in this story of God's amazing gift of second chances. I have enjoyed reading the continuing saga of the four Macalisters as each finds their forever love. I can't wait for Elizabeth's story! Did we get a hint that it might be the P.I.?
Faith filled suspense story by a super author. Great addition to the series. The meeting of Sylvia and Ray was a surprise, but sure works for this story. Clean and spiritual. Highly recommend. I received a copy from the author. Opinions are my own.

This calendar is so cool!! It is the size of most wall calendars, so size was perfect. The print comes out perfect does not look cheap. I would normally not pay this much for a calendar, but this was a gift and I knew it would so be worth it. I really liked it and wish I would have ordered one for myself. The price of these just skyrocketed, so it might be a little too high for now. I only knocked down one star because mine came with a crease on one of the coroners.
The print is high quality, and I like how they include holidays, but some of the artwork of Frida is just... terrible. Maybe that's my fault for not looking closer at the images. For example, January has Frida with a mustache drawn on her finger, taking an iPhone selfie. It all just seems out of taste, but I can live with it.
I have ordered the Frida calendar several times in the past. It is a special gift for my Daughter-In-Law who is from Mexico. She is always so pleased to receive a gift about her Mexican ancestors. The drawings are lovely!

A great guide for night sky photography. Simple and to the point. Not a lot of "filler". Perfect size to take on the go. I have been in the photography business for over 30 years and this book taught me a few new things, yet it's also a great book for the not so experienced photographer. If you want to get out there and shoot the night sky...look no further! Jennifer Wu nailed it!
Very nice overview with practical information on how to plan and prepare for night photography. However, there are a number of key topics that are missing or only lightly touched upon. In planning for a night shoot the use of apps such as PhotoPills are an essential tool in conjunction with GPS apps. The guide only provides a high level pass at post processing and doesn't discuss tools such as stacking images to increase the signal to noise ratio. And, the guide doesn't talk at all about using tracking devices with your camera. So, a good basic overview for the novice.
I always loved photography and planned on one day getting a nice camera and taking some wonderful shots of the sky but when I did they looked nothing like the ones I see online so I bought this book and while I'm no where near a pro thankfully I can now take some beautiful pictures showing the milky way, I can paint with light, and I can make star trails.
Jennifer Wu is an amazing nature and landscape photographer, truly an artist. She has taken some of the most beautiful photographs of the night sky including the Milky Way galaxy, the aurora borealis, and the moon (go to her website and look at her portfolio). Now with this book she teaches how to take extraordinary nighttime landscapes with your DSLR, capturing the beauty of the night sky and revealing more majesty than our eyes can see! This book is detailed, and organized to answer all your questions, it provides important information about post processing using Photoshop and Lightroom working with the RAW files to achieve the highest quality. After reading this book, I went out on a perfectly clear night before dawn and took some of the most amazing photographs I ever have. This book has opened up a new world of photographic possibilities to me. If you have looked with awe at beautiful night landscape photographs such as those taken by Jennifer Wu and wondered exactly how to do it, wonder no longer, this book explains everything!
This book is really good. I doubt anyone could do better. Everything you can think of is covered. Very few people will master everything in this book. That being said, it is written in plain English and easy to understand. There is just a lot of stuff. You will never have to buy another book.This is really for a serious photographer. Someone with a sturdy tripod, an SLR (preferably full frame) with high ISO, and a good wide angle lens or lenses.
I am a novice photographer and have never taken any formal courses or training in photography. My interest in photography is as a hobby and as I am a physician I have limited free time so I needed a nuts and bolts guide to get me on the right track. Right out of the box I took this book and my camera gear on a long summer weekend to Beaufort, NC where on a clear night you may still see the Milky Way and wanted to take some long exposure night shots. I spent some time reading this book and dog-eared the pages I needed and once I was set up I was able to shoot manual bulb exposures using my DSLR that I would not have easily done fumbling around on the internet trying to find simple recipes for shooting particular night sky phenomena. I was able to shoot the Milky Way (looks way more impressive on an HD TV than I ever thought it would), star trails, and have since captured several long duration exposures of the International Space Station over my home in Raleigh. One I knew how to set the camera up the only thing I needed to know was what I wanted to shoot and when.Admittedly, these techniques are quite simple once you understand how to set-up the camera. The thing I lacked was a "guru" who could simply provide the "secrets" on how to take the shots.This book met my needs and as the title indicates, it is a field guide.
Fabulous, easy to understand field guide for night photography! Jennifer covers many, many aspects of night photography - not just star trails and the moon... Very informative, includes "settings to start with" for most applications. She goes into enough detail so that you can understand and implement the technique, but in a way that is not so technical that you are confused. This is an excellent reference and field guide that will always be in my bag as my "go to" reference for night shooting!

I made and used my “absolut accurate†woden self made star tracker .It was imperative to manualy rotante it for at least 2 or 4 min, to get waht we have today w/ ISO 8000 30sec f2.0 !!!Great begining book!

I've had 2 surgeries in the past four years for my back/neck pain. Beforehand I could not even put a pair of socks on without screaming in pain. The procedure in this book is the most incredible and amazing thing I've ever done for my body.... spent hundreds and thousands of $$$$ for 'fixing' my back. This is your answer. DO IT..... This is an older book . In my case it explained the pain well and by following the very simple exercises described in the book I was quickly relieved of pain. Over the years I have given several copies of this book away because it helped me. However I always keep a copy in case I get in trouble again I would not want to be without one.
Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty!No joke... as far as I'm concerned my back pain is essentially cured. It took me 3 attempts to get the exercise right . You must follow the directions exactly and rest 24 hrs between attempts. Immediately after the 3rd attempt , I was able to bend down without my knees buckling, and get up from a squatting position with strength in my legs.No pain in the morning. But I do have some pain if I sit in one position for awhile--can deal with that.Physical tx and chiropractic have been helpful but only remedial. This one exercise in the book cured me. Follow directions about diet and water intake.I'm now telling all my friends. Purchase any of author's books as well. Best Rx for staying healthy in case we get national health insurance when we will not have access to anything.This is an update(November 10,2008). I don't even think of my back anymore.I can sit in any position for any length of time. I still drink alot water but stopped all exercises because I have no pain. If the pain returns I will resume the exercises. This book is the best of all self-help medical books on the market!. A true miracle. Another update(March 17,2009). We had a bad winter and was able to shovel snow without any pain whatsoever. Of course, I did use proper posture. Still no back pain of any sort and that includes from any posture for prolonged time period, Also I can walk as much as I want.Hello again.It is November 21,2009). This past summer, I began getting 'twinges' in my back. No pain mind you, just a twinge or two. I figured my disc was starting to bulge again.So to play it safe, I did the exercise just once and the twinge vanished immediately after. Still no pain or twinge as of today.I am watching my diet and am drinking just water (except one cup of coffee in the morning) As I said in the beginning of this review, I am cured. Wouldn't you know it, national health care in probably going to crush us but water to the rescue (until that also is taxed along with botox...not funny!)Hello again and good-bye after this last update. Today is Dec 14,2009. Here in Michigan it has snowed and iced x3 so far and all in the past 7 days. The snow was fluffy one day and slushy and heavy the other, the third was 1/4 inch of melting ice and heavy. I was able to do my snow shoveling by hand without any pain.I have not had any twinges since this past summer. Let me repeat. My back pain is cured because my disc(s) are back in place using this simple exercise. Try it, you'll like it. Au revoir mes amisOoops... spoke too soon. My lower back is still cured, though!!Today is March 25, 2011...No misprint- 2011- and still no back pain or bulging discs.... By anyone's definition, I am still cured. She still had some lingering but mild pain after the third procedure so I did not do anymore. 2 days ago I asked her how her back was, since she never said anything more about it. She said she has been pain-free for some time now. Nice!!
I love this guys books. This is only the second book of his that I've read. ("Back Pain" and "Your Bodie"s Many Cries For Water") He's very practical and his methods simple to do yet effective. Natural methods never stop amazing me. Dr, Batmanghelidj will open your eyes to some very simple methods that can greatly improve your health.
Impressed with the premise, makes a lot of sense. I had read many years ago about the necessity of water, but this book really brings the point home. I know no one that drinks as much water as they should, and honestly, it only makes sense to drink lots and lots of water to keep everything working as it should. Book also includes some very effective lower back exercises that work. Glad I bought it.

Dr. Batman is my hero..... I went to the doc to get some pain meds and she sent me to the hospital to get an MRI and they wanted to operate but the neurologist said he would see me the next day . He gave me three choices,surgery,cortizol shots,or 18 months to 24 months to recover from 3 bulging and one ruptured disc #5. After a month in a chair laying on one side---- at the library I found the Body's many cries for water....gave me some HOPE , which I had lost. The first day...my back was improving...my emotions were improving and I felt better. Then I ordered some of his books online and they are GREAT! The back book is very helpful to understand what I am up against. The cancer book was very encouraging. Cancer can bring fear to anyone who doesn't understand there are some safe treatments available.And of course ,I had to buy the bodies many cries for water book. I will be ordering some more books soon and recommending them to friends , neighbors and family members.....Keep your mind open and receive the answers to your questions ,and receive hope , help, and healing. Haven't used pain meds for 30 days...just salt and water.

I attended AACN's NTI critical care conference in 2007, and had the privilege of attending lectures by Thomas Ahrens. After studying tons of material in preparation for the exam, this was the last book I purchased. It should have been the first and only one I purchased. Ahrens simplifies complex concepts in an interesting manner, and covers material you WILL SEE on the exam. This book was the most helpful resource I utilized! He presents hundreds of scenarios and practice questions, which were priceless when I sat for the exam. I passed the paper-and-pencil, full-length CCRN exam on the first try. Great prep indeed from Ahrens - a valuable and brilliant critical care expert.Tip: If you want in-depth info (down to the cellular level), try using the "Core Curriculum" from AACN as an added source. Although Ahrens' book is the most in-line with the actual exam, if you desire advanced pathophysiological data, you will require another source.
I would have to say that this is the best CCRN review book out there. It is easily readable, comprehensive, and includes many practice questions to help you determine if you understand, can apply, and can remember the material. I have bought other review books, but unfortunately, they have been in outline forms and not as valuable. They get boring quick too! I have no problems with the little bits of extra infomration included in this book that may or may not be on the exam as it helps you comprehend the other information and serves as a review. I have bought other books that only have questions for review and I must say that I tried some of them without this book and did so so, but not great. After reading the sections of this book, I went back to those questions and others I had not done and did much much, much better, as I had reviewed the information and had a better understanding of the material! I certianly think this is a good book for anyone planning to take the CCRN exam or wishing to brush up and learn more about critical care nursing in general! I definately believe this book is the book I need to help me pass the CCRN. I am planning to take the exam in September- I will leave and update to how I do after! Thanks again for this book.
Great book to learn however I would not recommend it. It goes into a lot of cool to know things but not needed in my opinion. Would recommend the pass ccrn practice questions instead and the videos of the funny female nurse everyone illegally has.
I too thought that the first chapter was hard to get through--the cardiovascular section is extremely thorough and has quite a bit of information that really isn't addressed on the exam. The remaining chapters, however, were much easier reading, and the explanations are so much better than what I have found in other books. The book also has an extensive collection of practice questions, and while it does not give rationales for the correct answers, it does direct you to where it was covered in the book. I used several resources to study for the exam and this one was by far the most complete. I am currently in a graduate program working on my CCNS and I still use this book all of the time as a reference for my assignments.
The book is dense and dry. In addition to that the CD that was included did not work on either computer in my house. Luckily i purchased two study guides. I would recommend Barron's over this one. I am now on the phone with McGraw Hill and the support is lacking. too late for me to get my money back.
An awesome reference book for all things critical care. It definitely goes into way more detail than is needed for the CCRN exam, but is an incredibly useful tool.
Good book but way more depth than you need for the actual CCRN book, in my opinion. The practice questions are helpful, but way more difficult than the exam. The cardiac practice test questions can be helpful. I watched the Laura Gasparis videos, studied a comprehensive 80 page review of systems I found online, and went through a CCRN practice question book online twice, relied on my experience with PA catheters and MICU patients and was able to pass the first time. Don't think you need to study before signing up for the test because you might put it off for years. Just sign up for the damn test so you can buckle down and make yourself study! Highly recommend buying a CCRN practice test questions book
