As an amateur archeologist it was all exciting to visit places in history. I spent two weeks in Egypt, but at the time I had little interest in the pyramids. I suppose it was due to the fact that so much was written and so much was distorted by Hollywood, and the various religions. I bought Orion Mystery to read on a long weekend but didn't expect to gain much more than I already knew. I couldn't put the book down. Let me repeat that in case you skimmed over it. I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN. I will never look at the sky and at Orion the same again. What a great book to require all high school students to read. it would open their eyes to a myriad of possibilities in any field.
This is a fairly well documented and compelling analysis of the Egyptian pyramids showing a strong connection between their design and specific stars in the heavens. The authors use archeological evidence as well as ancient Egyptian texts and astronomy to prove their point. Well done for a couple of "non- academics"!
Robert Bauval understands Egyptian culture and Egyptian past.He himsef was born in Egypt of an Egyptian mother.He explains very methodically the connection between the pyramids and the stars,especially Orion.The Egyptians believed the soul of the Pharaoh will join Orion.This is probably the beginning of Astrology.Bauval's book was very inspirational to me,and I totally understand his preoccupation with Egypt.I myself am Greek,born in Greece,and when you are born in a place that in essence is a Museum,you become steeped in that culture,it becomes part of your DNA.Greeks and Egyptians have been connected for thousands of years,with Egypt being the mother of three major reliegions: Buddism,Judaism,and Christianity,via Greek philosophy.Bauval's book totally reawakened my interest in Great Egypt.It is a great read.

Earlier interpretations referred back to the Bible and 19th century attitudes about religion. A form of Christianity projected on Egyptians. The pyramids are older than that!

That field is so vast and over studied that a break away theory will often be shunned by the "experts". Bauval did his research in his spare time and often while stationed far from Cairo. His willingness to pursue alternatives to accepted beliefs and his patience in testing his theories is remarkable.
The authors wrote a fascinating tale of archeological detective work and serendipitous discoveries. Bauval is an engineer, who, because of his familiarity with laying out buildings, realized the three main pyramids on the Giza Plateau were strangely aligned, and then by happenstance realized that they match the three stars in the Belt of Orion. This discovery lead to more research and the theory that most of the pyramids of Egypt are laid out according to stellar configurations.
Mr. Bauval is a maverick along with many other disciplines challenging the archaeological malpractice that been done by un certificated people who can read hieroglyphics but are not engineers or architects. the book and his you tube presentations are fascinating....

My unfamiliarity with the designations of British officials aside I found this work to be informative, very relatable, and extremely relevant for the current time. As a black American we often don’t know how “blackness†is treated in other parts of the world because we are so subsumed with the treatment here. In a sense this book starts as a bit of an origin story and then transforms into a nostalgic conversation you could have had with anyone in your family.
Racism is a big issue here in America. However, I shouldn’t be so naive to think it’s only an issue here. This is something that should be talked about everywhere. I enjoyed this book for giving me insight on the issues that are being dealt with in the UK. I’ve become more aware, and I want to share this book with others. It’s a must read for those who deny the harsh reality that is inequality. The fight against racism is far from being won.

I bought this book because I love Marjane Satrapi and was trying to find something similar. This book didn't really fulfill that need, as it's a less involved story and more of a snapshot of what it was like for two kids to wait for their parents to come back from visiting their grandmother during the war in Lebanon. Not really the engrossing read I was looking for, and sometimes a little confusing. The artwork is interesting, though.
I love this book! I took a class on graphic novels in college last semester and this novel is the only one that I finished and actually liked! A great read and would be a great resource for a classroom!
Awesome story and way more fun to read than traditional story books. Has a comic type of layout that is easy to follow and illustrates the scenery as you read. Very interesting time to live in Beirut.
Told from a child's point of view, this story blends humor and sadness and love to show how family and friends live in terrible times. Symbolically, when a family chandelier is shattered, everyone knows it's time to move on. Still, the family survives. Must read.
So realistically portrayed, I was transported back in time! I became Zeina, and her neighbours were mine! I laughed, I cried! I forgot it was black and white drawings on paper! It brought to life the optimism of the Lebanese in times of war and their humour in spite of the doom and gloom.
This graphic novel allows us to reach across the gulf that separates our safe western lifestyles from the terrors of ordinary people trapped in a war zone, to witness families surviving against all odds, and the depth of friendships that grow in such desperate circumstances... I love Erin Hanson and have many of her poems framed and posted around my room that I found online. I was so happy to order this anthology and have read it so many times throuth already. I will warn however that it touches on many topics of depression and self harm that could be triggering or uncomfotable for some. This did not stop me from reading it and I think could be very influential and educational to those who do not understand depression. Beautiful work and will buy her other pieces!
Beautiful words. The only reason I give it a 4: some of the poetry is very dark and comes from a place a intense pain and loss. I can relate, but not fully. For those who are going through heartache and loss, this is a great book!
I love this book. It's melodic, it's rhythmic, it's lyrical, it's evocative, it's thought provoking. It's so many wonderful things. It's hard to imagine that it's written by such a young girl who hasn't even been writing poetry for all that long. This is a beautiful book of poetry from an immensley talented poet and I can't wait until she publishes more.
I love Erin Hanson's quality of writing, and this book is filled with great poems. I would recommend this to anyone going through a hard time who wants someone or something to relate to.
I love these poems. I enjoy reading them over and over and often share with friends when I feel their mood fits the poem.
I found the poetry to be a bit childish and lacking debth at times. May be somones cup of tea but just not my kind of read.

About the Author
John H. Chambers was born in Queensland. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and most recently was a visiting professor at City University of New York. He taught history and philosophy at universities in USA, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. This is his ninth book. His books Hawaii (On-the-Road History), A Traveller's History of Australia, and A Traveller's History of New Zealand are also published by Interlink. He lived in Puerto Rico for many years with his wife, Maria G. Figueroa.Maria G. Figueroa is a native Puerto Rican. She taught history at Inter-American University of Puerto Rico. She holds BA, MFA, MA and MEd degrees, the latter two from Columbia University, and she writes frequently on history and curriculum.
