I think this purchase gave quite good value for the money and would recommend the book to anyone interested in phonetics, whether as someone working in relevant fields (actors, speech language pathologists, etc.) or just as someone who is curious about the basics of speech production, language change, language learning, and the way various people deal with expressing themselves in the wide variety of languages in the world. The author writes well and has organized his material well. He also writes with good but appropriate humor which, happily, facilitates his explanations of occasionally complicated matters. It's clear that he is writing for a diverse audience and some of the later chapters were clearly primed for those specialists working with people with various types of injury-based speech impediments, but even these chapters were quite interesting, and remarkably clear (for this reader, who has no background or direct knowledge of the field). If I am seemingly so high on the book (and I am) then why not five stars versus four. The answer is simply that I bought the kindle addition and, while the text and larger diagrams were clear and had no discernible problems, a number of the charts laying out portions of, for example, the International Phonetic Alphabet, were extremely difficult to make out, given the shrinking of the page necessary to fit on a Kindle screen. This factor was a bit frustrating (although readily understandable), but still didn't prevent the purchase being extremely worthwhile.

It helped break down phonetics very simply and well to me when I was struggling in the class. Couldn't recommend this book more as a supplement or on its own. It was recommended to me by my professor and I couldn't be thankful enough.
Fantastic book! For me, it's very helpful towards understanding Phonetics and the relationship to phonology. These topics are difficult and complex but this book, however you use it, will definitely make complex issues easier to understand. I intend to use this book heavily as I continue on in my studies.

I'm a fan of good play-along book for drums and these is one of those book that made me a fan. The transcriptions are very good,and it has also the voicings which are very helpfull, the play-along tracks are very good as well and the Amazing Slow Downer gives you everything you need to learn each one of the songs in these book. You could fist listen to a track with drums, slow down and hear every beat with good detail. Then the drumless track lets you play (also at your desired speed) the whole song, so the experience is like having a complete band playing with you whenever you want. It difficult to find musician interested in funk and willing to expend as much time as it's needed to learn the songs. These book lets you do all of it at home, so you're ready to play live when the time comes

My fiancé started drumming in January of this year and wanted to learn a funk song so he chose to purchase this book. The main problem with some of the other books we've looked at is that they don't have notations for the entire song. This book has each song in its entirety, rather than just the most well-known parts. The CD it comes with is really cool because if you aren't quite fast enough to play along, you can slow it down while the pitch stays the same (so it doesn't sound distorted). The tracks are also great for background music while working on fills or funky beats of your own.

not bad! not my favorite funks songs but it'll do for teaching.
I am not familiar with any of these songs. But that makes it perfect to practice improvising to unfamiliar music! You can play a straight beat or stretch out and groove all over the place. And because I don't know how the original drummer played it, I can really have fun with it and not feel constrained to play what someone else played.Of course, they do have the original drum part on one track and the drum part taken out on the next track. So if you want to learn how the original drummer played it, you can listen, read the music that comes with it, and then go nuts.I don't believe that the original musicians played on this CD, but the quality is very good and sounds authentic. The vocal track is missing and that is the only complaint that I would have, but even that is not too big of a deal.This is a lot of fun to play along with weather you are a fan of funk or not. I do not really enjoy listening to funk, but I LOVE to play it!! Who knows, maybe I'll start to develop a taste to hear more!!!This is WELL WORTH the money. You will not be sorry. It even includes the Amazing Slow Downer software that will slow or speed the song without changing the pitch. Good stuff!!
Yes, the play along tracks are without singing, yes the drum parts on the charts can be a little different from the original, but hey !? what's the use of these books, just try to understand the way to play such style I think, so the goal is reached, and quite well. There is a really big effort done on the mix and the sound, it doesn't sound cheap.Furthermore, not having the singing on the part is a good way to force you to stay concentrate and listen to the music another way. This book/CD is definitely a good deal.

Really cute book with great pictures. My 6 year old loves it and was so excited Little Golden books came out with Ghostbuster's books. These are appropriate for all ages and the ghost pictures are great. A must have for anyone who loves Ghostbusters or Golden Books. Note: There are some larger words so these are not ideal for beginner readers.
Reading your kids a bedtime story hasn't been this fun in a while. OG Ghostbusters story is great with awesome illustrations. 100% legit for the Ghostbusters fan. Follows the movie storyline and has a good amount to read per page. Reads through in about 7-10 minutes, depending on your style. My kids love this one

I just got through day 4 and... this devotional is exactly what I needed. Throughout the devotional, I can see how the author's words tie back to different scriptures in the bible. My only suggestion would be to supply more scripture for meditation purpose but.. this is an older work. Either way, it is amazing. There is plenty of space in the book to write in scriptural references. Very scripturally and theologically sound devo that helps open my eyes and brings me to a closer intimacy with God.God brought this devotional to me exactly when I needed it. I'm only on day 4 and I am being changed.The devotional has applicable ways to wait on God, a little different from Abide in Christ by Andrew Murray which didn’t give a lot of practical advice. This is a wonderful book for an Alto Sax player. Has a GREAT variety of songs some are challenging and others are a bit easier. My son LOVES this and it has popular well known songs which encourages my son to play and practice more. He loves the song "Happy" and is really trying to get the song done but he is a relatively new player so it will take him some time. I am so proud him and I am so glad that books such as this are available. The price was right and there really are exactly 101 Movie Hits (all familiar ones at that)!
My teen is enjoying this book! In band she's often playing supporting notes and not the main melody, so she is loving this!
Daughter is in 7th grade & it was a struggle to get her to enjoy much less even practice her saxophone. Now she loves playing! And we love listening!
Great selection...will keep me busy for a while! Would be nice if there were backing tracks to play along to.

Richard Susskind is Honorary Professor of Law at Gresham College, London, IT adviser to the Lord Chief Justice, and an independent consultant to professional firms and national governments. He is Chair of the Advisory Panel on Public Sector Information, a law columnist at The Times, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the British Computer Society. He studied law at Glasgow University and has a doctorate in law and computers from Balliol College, Oxford. His views on the future of the legal profession have influenced a generation of lawyers around the world. He has written several books, including Expert Systems in Law (OUP, 1987), The Future of Law (OUP, 1996), and Transforming the Law (OUP, 2000), and has been invited to speak in over 40 countries. He was awarded an OBE in the Millennium New Year's Honours List for services to IT in the Law and to the Administration of Justice.

The experience base underlying my comments are as a recovering attorney who has served as a practice development consultant to law firms around the United States. These comments are primarily directed to those who are invested in, depending on your point of view, the legal industry or profession.First the good news. Before reading Susskind's work, you'll need three packs of sticky notes in different colors. Use one color to mark the things that you already agree with, another for the things you disagree with and the third - the big pack - for the new ideas you hadn't considered before. Since tradition is only helpful to the extent the future will be like the past, it is not so much in his specific predictions that Susskind's work benefits the legal community as much as the fact that he makes the velocity of change undeniable.The metaphorical image of lawyers Susskind paints is a bunch of guys in `bespoke' suites, standing on a beach toward which a huge wave is approaching, arguing with each other who will bear legal liability for the tsunami. Those who value the profession and their role in it will heed the warning and move to the high ground. These will be those who recognize that the legal profession is the servant of society - not the repository of its order or wisdom.In `minding the gap' between consultant speak and difference between theory and practice, the footnotes alone - most of which are web sites exemplifying what he's discussing, are worth the price of the book. The author would have earned more money from this work if he had simply asked the readers to send him a dollar every time they looked followed up on a footnote and said to themselves `now I see what he's talking about'.The bad news is that the author's experience clearly focuses this book on the net sum of his professional experience, which, apparently, is serving the largest `white shoe' firms in Great Britain. Since, using economic terminology, the law is a `lagging phenomena' - this exacerbates the differences in `legal culture' between us. The significance of this is inversely proportional to the `listening skills' of the reader. To the extent that most lawyers spend the time they're not talking thinking up what they're going to say next - this is a problem.Overall, the book gets a thumbs up. The author does American lawyers the favor of not only saying that changes are coming but outlines some specifics as to what those changes might be. Getting to higher ground in time is up to each individual and firm.
Please note the question mark in the title.Susskind, a British information-technology consultant and futurist, is not necessarily predicting the end of the legal profession in this thought-provoking but overly long and convoluted book. He is predicting that within a couple of decades, lawyering will have changed in ways that the typical law firm partner of 2009 can hardly envision.The engine of change, as far as Susskind is concerned, is the Internet and information technology in general. Susskind points to 10 "disruptive technologies" - among them ideas as prosaic as automated document assembly and as visionary as the provision of legal advice through open-source technology - that will alter the face of the profession."Information technology is now part of the universe of lawyers," Susskind writes. "It is not a parallel universe. Disruptive legal technologies are too important to be left to technologists ... they are applications of technology that challenge the old ways and, in so doing, bring great cost savings and new imaginative ways of managing risk."Susskind believes, for example, that except for the most customized, top-of-the-line engagements, legal work done by top firms in the United States and the United Kingdom will soon be largely standardized through the use of intelligent document assembly programs, the deployment of more paralegals and nonlawyers, and other innovations. Even high-end corporate work, he says, can benefit from standardization. The result will be lower costs to clients, a broader availability of legal services to the public, and possibly the end of the big law firm as we know it today.Susskind is quite aware of the cutting edge of legal marketing. One of his "disruptive" techniques is "the electronic legal marketplace," which he sees as including online ratings of individual lawyers, online auctions, bulk purchasing, and readily available price comparisons. He foresees the multi-sourcing of legal services, increased confidence by clients that they are getting the best value for their money, greater choice, and of course lower costs.The book can be slow going (Susskind has not learned how to write in short paragraphs), it can be repetitious, and Susskind's examples are taken almost entirely from British life, law, and experience and will be quite foreign to the American reader. For example, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, a government agency that Susskind regards as a key player in the legal Internet, sounds merely quaint to American ears.Regardless, anyone who wishes to understand where the profession has been and where it is going should read this book.
I'm a lawyer and bought this book when one of my clients told me she was reading it as part of her book club--which is comprised of high-level executives. Indeed, the very title had me worried! That aside, I found this book extremely insightful and quite helpful to me as a legal practitioner. It explores ways in which we can use technology to enhance efficiency in obtaining or rendering legal advice. While many lawyers might cringe at the possibility of being replaced by an algorithm, those of us who truly value their clients' interests and are sensitive to cost effectiveness can adapt many of the concepts presented in this book in improving their own customer service. This is a "must read" for lawyers and clients alike.
Provocative and inteligent in a general view. Unfortunatelly, the author forget the civil law universe and, thus, his conclusions don't apply entirely to "lawyers" at all, but to a specific system of justice with proper features.

I purchased this book to augment my reading list for a Master's in International Relations course on Chinese culture and politics and it proved to be priceless. Although I have a limited academic background in Chinese history and philosophy I found this book to be quite accessible. That does not necessarily mean that it was always an easy read, however with effort a relative newcomer to the topic can gain much from this book.
