Don't get me wrong, this book is good to read and I will be buying more of David Baldacci's books, but this one was a bit strange. There is a sub plot involving Michelle that has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the story. I kept waiting for both stories to come together, but it never did. It was distracting from the main storyline, in fact, the sub plot could have had it's own book. Both stories are good, with surprises aplenty but it still didn't make sense to me. Overall, First Family is a good book with the main story line being strong and the book flows along nicely. Would I recommend this book to anyone else? Absolutely!
The First Lady Jane Cox knew Sean King many years ago when he was still in the Secret Service. Now, she needs his help and his partner’s Michelle Maxwell to find her niece who apparently has been kidnapped from her home. But just how much help does she really want? Are there compromising skeletons that could be uncovered in their digging?Little do they know that Jane and her husband, the president, immensely angered someone years ago. They have to use all of their wits to avoid being collateral damage in the agenda of a very determined individual, especially because they are getting very little help from Jane. One thing is for sure, the status quo before the abduction gets turned upside down. And there is the call out of the blue that Michelle’s mother has died, possibly murdered, on top of their case. Michelle finally has to confront her past.
King and Maxwell are such a good team. Of the 3 - 4 books I've read involving this team, I like this book the best. It was so interesting and I liked much of the dialogue between Sean and Michelle. They're so comfortable with each other. Their banter is fun to hear and occasionally they ribbed one another - particularly in this book. We also sometimes know their inner thoughts - including dread or fear at times. Very near the beginning, King and Maxwell come across Tyler - a teenager - who was thinking about running away from home. Initially, almost against their better judgement, they take to him and become involved in helping him with what turns out to be huge; at the same time, they know he can't really pay them. As they they become more involved, and some threats were made against them, Sean quipped to Michelle: "In for a dime, in for a dollar." Michelle replied dryly, "I'm just wondering when we're going to run out of change." Eventually their sheltering Tyler and their wanting to understand more about some mysterious events unfolding led them them in several different directions. The plot kept going and going: in the first third of the book it seemed as if nothing was really going to happen. Plus at times too much explanation was given about what they were doing. Then it suddenly picked up. I'm so glad I continued the book. Of course some bad guys were involved; we're kept in the dark for quite awhile about how exactly are the "bad guys".
A lively sometimes believable story of sex and violence. Politicians think they are above the law and usually are. Sam Quarry with a work ethic that made America what it is levels the playing field because his daughter was damaged with disregard. King and Maxwell save the day but later make sure documents of politician malfeasance reaches appropriate hands. Though Sam Quarry is killed it is during the effort to save the youngsters. Ever the teacher, he instructs the children to avoid hatred because revenge is wrong.
Baldacci is one of my favorite authors. Anything he writes, I am eager to read and always enjoy particularly the political plots. This one was intriguing in that he did NOT try to paint the President and the First Lady as perfectly innocent and untouchable but instead as real people with real faults and problems. The picture of the First Lady as responsible for her husband is one that too many women understand too well. King and Maxwell are, as usual, bigger than life in some ways, but that is what we like about them. Their dedication to one another is particularly attractive. King's trip to Maxwell's home town is particularly touching and their dedication to that mystery in the middle of the Presidential kidnapping was a glimpse into their real character. The exposure to the little place in Alabama was a character sketch in itself. My heart understood the Quarry family as well as Ruth Ann and Gabriel and their devotion. In short, the plot within a plot is pure Baldacci at his best and the end is absolutely AMAZING! When I finished the book, I put it down absolutely exhausted but totally pleased with another finely tuned mystery that teased my brain and taught m a lesson. I highly recommend it to readers who love to be challenged and want to feel the energy.
For an author that apparently researches his books, I had a difficult time with the kidnapper. The author makes it a point to tell us several times that the man had no education and then mentions several times that he was a F-4 pilot in Viet Nam. As an Air Force veteran I can tell you that a college education and officer training are a requirement to be a military pilot. These type of gaffes make it hard to stay focused on a book that already wanders around too much. Where were the editors?

I was skeptical about the title, but this was exactly what I needed to get my drawing going. I had been trying to develop some skill on and off for a couple of months, but things weren't really going well for me. I read quite a few different books (good ones, like Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain) and understood things conceptually. But for whatever reason that just didn't seem to help me when trying to draw the simple shapes of things. Most of what I've read talked a bit about lines and shapes and quickly moved on to shading and texture. I appreciated it all, but I was still stuck and very frustrated trying to get the shapes that I wanted to appear on the page. I wasn't seeing any progress at all, and it wasn't enjoyable.The simple approach of this book made everything click for me and it all started with the simple thing everyone can draw well enough for themselves: stick figures. I was just practicing stick figures and getting them right, then I added shapes to my stick figures and am working on getting that right. It's been a week and I am so happy and proud with my progress and know that I will make so much more.There's a couple of things that bug me about the book. It was a really short read for one. The most frustrating was that the text didn't match up at all with the diagrams quite a few times (there's even a mention of a diagram that isn't there). But in the end it was exactly what I needed. It helped me conquer my inhibitions about drawing and really start practicing.
I guess one could say this book is focused, but I think it’s short on how to draw. Mastery is tough to gain in one day... impossible is a better word. Obtain DRAWING IN THE DIGITAL AGE, by Wei Xu. He goes into more detail on observation and the forms that need to be drawn first, and he recognizes the importance of proportions to achieve an accurate drawing. This book gives a terse explanation of how to draw and kind of leaves the reader on his own. Drawing: One Day Mastery is disappointing on many levels. Another good book for learning to draw is Mark Kistler’s You Can Draw In 30 Days. How To Draw Anything by Mark Linley is another excellent drawing book, but he concentrates on landscapes more than humans or houses or monsters. Linley’s Book is more adult oriented. Kistler’s book is appropriate for any age, but he likes to bend his art toward kids. Kistler’s book is more fun and absolutely filled with good tips, but landscapes are not his deal.AD2
Good book. I've tried to sketch before but being that I have no innate talent I never did well. I'm surprised at how one can learn how without necessarily having talent. It is rather a set of skills that even I can learn. My main problem now is overcoming my personal doubts. Progress is slow but noticible.

I have a plethora of educational research texts which offer a few pages or portions of a chapter to this concept, but differing uses of the term "conceptual framework" across the texts has left me confused. Reason and Rigor has finally turned on the light bulb for me! They explain how they use the terms "conceptual framework" and 'theoretical framework" and how others may use those terms as well. I read the book cover to cover in less than 24 hours after I received it and have already went back to areas where I lighted particularly helpful content. I am finally able to move forward with a study that has been dragging. I highly recommend this text to anyone making the shift into social science research.

About the Author
Irene Aylworth Douglass grew up on a ranch in Reno, Nevada, where she loved riding horses and became a skilled rider. She attended the University of Nevada before her marriage and years later served as an elected member of the Alumni Council. Her husband's job took them to many states including the assignment to West Pakistan, the location for her book, "An American Woman in Pakistan . . . Memories of Mangla Dam." During those nomadic years, she attended five colleges and universities, studying sciences, writing, and real estate, which led to a long career selling real estate and businesses in the San Francisco Bay area. Now retired in Northern California, Irene enjoys singing in choral groups, water aerobics, and two book clubs as well as fulfilling her long passion to write. "An American Woman in Pakistan . . . Memories of Mangla Dam" is Irene's first book.

This book was written by a classmate of mine from the Reno High School class of 1957. I didn't know Irene well until around 2005 when she visited the town I now live in and we visited for several hours. She told me at that time she was writing a book about her experiences in Pakistan in the 1960s. Having dreamed about writing a book for years, as probably all avid readers do, I admired her for actually working on a book. So when her book came out this year on Kindle, I ordered it right away. It blew me away. It had been 40 plus years since she had gone through this experience but she made it sound so fresh, with her wonderful descriptions of places, people, events, feelings, along with much history of Pakistan. I was also amazed that she was only 22 years old when she arrived in Pakistan and, yet, she was so capable, strong, flexible, inventive, and confident. I don't think there are many 22 year old women who could have accomplished as much as she did for her family, friends, and community in a strange country that was so far from home. I admire her so much more now. Irene is a wonderful woman and I thank her for sharing this adventurous time in her life. The Kindle edition does contain some errors, i.e. punctuation mistakes, a word left out here and there, etc., but these should not detract from the overall delightful experience of her memoir. I was fortunate to live and attend school in Baral Colony while my father worked on the dam with countless others. As stated in this wonderful recounting, this job, this place, those people have left an indelible mark on my heart. We found lifelong friends and learned about a culture outside our little corner of the world. My experiences during those days of my teenage years, helped shape my life forever. And I,like many others, cried when it was time to go back to the States. I'm forever grateful to Mr. Guy for giving our family this wonderful education, and many thanks to Irene for bringing it all back to life!
I so enjoyed this! While reading, I knew it was written for my mom's sense of her time there and not me, the teenager they brought. It allowed me to remember so much! It also was the reason I made my husband accept a job in Venezuela! Great book Irene!
I am reading this book because I know the author. We attended the same high school. I admire her for leaving home and going to a completely different culture. She did this at a very young age. She really handled it well. Good job Irene.
Irene writes in such detail about life in Pakastan in the 60's. There's a good balance of cultural information combined with the nitty gritty of living in a foreign country with two small children without all the amenities she was used to in the States. The reader is brought right into the everyday life of "foreigners" living in a different country.
A fascinating story of life in Pakistan. Irene's descriptions of the sights & smells transport you there. Nice pictures are included too.
An excellent memoir describing a woman's experience dealing with a totally different culture at a time in our history when very little was knownabout Americans living in Pakistan.
Having lived in Pakistan during the time period covered in the the book, I LOVED it! I thought that Irene did an excellent job, and totally recommended the book to everyone! A wonderful read!

I have been thinking about opening my own small business based around hand-bound books for a while and have been stumped on one specific part of running a business: Marketing. In that analogy, content serves as food and entertainment. I actually followed the procedures and I am well off.Overall, It is an easy read and is not difficult to understand at all. I do think the level of detail presented is best for beginners. The first thing I felt like I would have liked a little different is how the chapters were laid out. I knew a decent few ideas but the book breaks into so much further than I realized on my own. This was truly helpful. My main take-away is to have intentional marketing message set up on a scheduler and that posts should "tell a story that only you can tell" to be most effective.
