In this, the first of four volumes, he traces history along two tracks: the first is Japan’s story, spanning the years between the great Kanto earthquake and the start of WWII; the second is the story of the author and his family growing up in a port town far from the drama taking place in Tokyo. Using a series of narrators to keep the story flowing, Mizuki prevents the account, which could have easily been a mere list of tragic incidents, from becoming dry, repetitive, or confusing. Shigeru tells and illustrates his autobiography as a child of the period of Japanese history he is also telling. He reason for this history as picture book if that Japanese students tend to receive a very sanitized version of Japan’s role as aggressor in more than the 15 year period that the Imperial Japanese Army engaged in a number of incidents in neighboring Korea and China. As a graphic history, rather than a graphic novel it is a superior effort. Writer, artist Shgeru Mizuki is one of the top names in Japanese Manga. That is he is both an artist and a writer and became one years after losing his writing arm as a soldier in World War II. This is an easy recommendation for fans but a slightly less enthusiastic recommendation for a more serious minded reader.It is a fairly old story that Japan has not done a good job of teaching its 20th Century history to its students. They are aware that their country lost World War II but may have a little or no appreciation for the aggressive way their country helped to initiate the war and the often vicious method employed as warriors and conquerors.Showa is the name for the period of Japanese history corresponding to the reign of the ShÅwa Emperor, Hirohito, from December 25, 1926, through January 7, 1989. Mizuki also lived through this period and his intention was to tell his life’s story as context for also telling something closer to the truth about how Japan acted during this era. He begins with a great earthquake in 1923 and follows with a series of episodes as the Japanese economy follows the world’s economy into what he calls the “American Depressionâ€.Much of the narrative is carried by a famous Mizuki character called Ratman. Vaguely akin to America’s Donald Duck but a more serious guide rather than a trickster. The narrative begins as mostly disjointed recollections and simple facts about certain events. The absence of analysis can make it hard to understand why we are being told things, but this is also the time of a very young Mizuki who may have only had a vague awareness of the larger events of his country.Towards the end there may be some analysis but never much and never at any depth. We are shown that the Japanese Army empowered itself to launch invasions and conduct military incidents seemingly despite or without any direction from the civil government. Ministers and opposing voices are assassinated with a regularity that has an almost casual feel to it. In a few years there are reported several attempted military takeovers, backed by killings and no one seems to have been held accountable in such a way as to thwart or deter the next plotters.If the historic content is lacking the artwork is not. Important people, events and iconic images are reproduced exactly using a technic developed to achieve photo realism. Other images are more impressionistic and typical of Japanese graphic novels, but this is a style all the author helped to develop.As a study, Showa is uneven and lacking in depth. As a Graphic History, autobiography and demonstration of the serious capabilities of manga it is more than worth reading. I will be seeking out a copy of the next collection of this 3 volume series.
This book is an incredible feat- a combination of history of Japan and a very personal autobiography. Mizuki manages to combine both with a dramatic presentation of a country spiraling into economic despair and blinding nationalism. He is unsparing when it comes to the country's misdeeds, and gives a sense of what people were thinking on the ground. His mix of drawing styles, tone, and narration are jarring at first, and his historical narrative is dense with facts and people, but once the reader gets used to the transitions, they really serve the overall historical picture in a way that any other medium simply could not.It seems that no one is harder on Japan, and on himself, than Mizuki. This is a man that does not look at his childhood through sepia-tinted glasses. He is the first to show the failings of his youth and those around him.This book is an immense challenge to translate, and Zack Davisson gives this work the translation it deserves. With cultural notes, historical notes, stylistic notes, and explanations about things that the average Japanese reader would instinctively know, the reader is guided in a way that only enhances the reader's appreciation for this work.I can't wait for the next volume!
A very deep and meaningful read, but also an exceedingly difficult one if you are not already versed in the basics of modern Japanese history. This book is not always in chronological order and simultaneously covers both the author's childhood and the history of Japan during this period. As such it can get pretty difficult to keep track of what is going on in Japan and in East Asia in general at the time, and how that plays into the overall narratives of the two stories. That understanding is crucial to the story, and while the author tries his best to insert explanations through lecturing cartoonish interlocutors, it was still written for an Asian audience with more proximity to and education in the events of the book. You may have a hard time keeping up if you're totally unfamiliar.
This is an outstanding comic. It combines a very strong survey history (absolutely everything with politics and the military, as well as a bit of culture) of the time with the personal stories of the author's childhood.The art is fantastic. Mr. Mizuki utilizes different styles for political/war scenes than for his personal stories. Additionally, he does a wonderful job drawing Japanese streets and the interiors of homes and businesses. It is a great view into the time period.Mr. Mizuki's historical survey shows the xenophobia of the Japanese military, the turmoil of the government, how the depression affected the farmers and common people, how the military used the depression and xenophobia to put a foothold in China, how the military created incidents with the Chinese to justify their invasions, and how the Japanese people suffered from the aggression of the military, weakness of the government and greed of the war profiteers.But the absolutely delightful part of this book are the childhood stories of Mr. Mizuki. He and his friends walked a total of 25 miles one hot summer day to try donuts (they were 3 yen each...they had 10 yen, so they couldn't take public transportation). The boys fought battles, threw poop at each other, studied the population of random cities, collected newspapers, and tried to make sense of the world around them (they were often confused by their families and teachers' reactions to the major events). Mr. Mizuki wrote that he slept late all the time and was usually late for school. He eats a lot, can't see well, does very poorly in school and college, gets fired from multiple jobs, and struggles early in his life. He is unsparing on himself. His family is poor, and his grandmother is a lovely lady. What is stunning is how his childhood in 1920s Japan is similar to mine (USA, 80s) and others. The imagination, feelings and struggles are universal.A wonderful book.

This book has been very informative regarding treatment for various offenders; juveniles, sex offenders; mentally ill; mentally retarded, etc. Valid research and resources are offered indicating outcomes of success and failures for programs in jails, prisons, and the community. It is quite interesting reading.
It looks like I bought the same book twice. I did, but I was thinking there were 2 editions, 1998 and 2001, and I was trying to get both. The book arrived very quickly and in great condition.
This is a really informative book, although I'm using it for school I know that this is one that I will be referring to throughout my education.
It was a book for school and it served it's purpose.

Outstanding book on Tibetan Buddhism. A bit long, especially with the history of it, but one can always skim through it. The part about the actual philosophy/religion was truly enlightening for me. I came away with knowing about the subject then I ever imagined. The author clearly has a passion for Tibetan Buddhism and some of the personal anecdotes really moved me. High quality book, written with an effective prose, tremendous content.
This is the first volume in Reginald Ray's two-volume introduction to Tibetan Buddhism. It focuses on the more conventional aspects of the tradition while the second volume (Secret of the Vajra World) deals with the more esoteric tantric components. Ray begins with a description of Buddhist Cosmology and he explains how Tibetans view that cosmology and integrate it into their daily lives. This helps to eliminate some of the dry scholasticism so often found in various introductions to religions. The fact that Ray has been a Buddhist practitioner for many years as well as a Western academic allows him approach the subject sometimes as an insider, a Buddhist who has participated in rituals and meditated on teachings, and sometimes as an outsider, a professor who can describe Tibetan history and Buddhist teachings in the more conventional academic way. I found this approach to be very effective, and Ray is able to maintain a balance somewhere between writing a love letter to his personal religious tradition and writing about Tibetan Buddhism as though it were a mysterious phenomenon from an alien world.I thought this book was organized very well. After the introduction on cosmology, it begins with a section on the history of the spread of Buddhism to Tibet, including a short discussion of the forms of Buddhism in India during the times leading up to both the early and later transmissions of Buddhism to Tibet. There are sections on the various "schools" of Tibetan Buddhism, the Nyingma, Kadam, Sakya, Kagyu, Gelug, as well as a section on the Ri-me (nonsectarian) movement of the 19th century. Ray stresses two trajectories within Tibetan Buddhist practice, scholarly monastic traditions and non-monastic tantric lineages, and compares the emphasis on each within each of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In fact, this dichotomy undergirds his entire discussion of Buddhist history.The next section contains a detailed discussion of the view and practice of Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism, respectively. Ray describes the view that is cultivated in each of the vehicles and then describes how that view influences one's meditation and ethical activities. It is important to note that Ray emphasizes that this division is merely a didactic convention and that, within Tibetan Buddhism, "Hinayana" does not necessarily refer to "Theravada" Buddhism. The final section introduces the gradual development of Buddhist philosophy by using the traditional framework of the "Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma." These three turnings are the Abhidharma system, Madhyamaka philosophy, and teachings on the Buddha-nature. This is likely the most difficult section of the book for those relatively unfamiliar with Buddhism, but Ray does an admirable job succinctly presenting the tenets of each system. He also briefly summarizes the debate among some Tibetan schools as to whether the second or third turning constitutes the final, ultimate teaching of the Buddha.Again, this book is a comprehensive introduction to Tibetan religious thought, both its history and practice. It does not focus so much on Tibetan culture, but that is not its aim. Whether you want to learn about Tibetan Buddhism from scratch or wish to augment what you already know, I highly recommend this book. Perhaps the best praise I can give is that I plan to read the companion volume, Secret of the Vajra World, another 400+ page book, very soon.
This is volume one of a two part work on Tibetan Buddhism by Reginald Ray. It is well-written, extremely comprehensive and thoroughly researched. There is an overwhelming amount of detail for most beginners, however.If you are looking for a detailed scholarly work or a good reference to contextualize other reading, this will meet your needs. However, you may want to try an "Introduction to Tantra" by Lama Yeshe for a more accessible introduction to Vajrayana.If you are completely new to Buddhism, then I would recommend Huston Smith's "The World's Religions" for an excellent, but short overview. If you purchase this book, you will have added the bonus of being able to read a similar introduction to Hinduism which I think is important for understanding Buddhist thought in a similar way that grasping the essentials of Judaism are important for a full understanding of the origin and development of Christianity.It is very difficult to "get" Tibetan Buddhism without understanding the unfolding of the Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. While this volume does an excellent job of doing this, it is also HUGE. The disadvantage of some of the short books on Tibetan Buddhism is that they sometimes don't do a great job of contextualizing the various Buddhist traditions and how they unfolded in time and/or geographically.If you merely want a taste of Tibetan Buddhist thought, then you may want to look at the book "The Art of Happiness" by Howard Cutler and the Dalai Lama. This presents some Tibetan ideas on everyday issues along with some commentary by a western psychiatrist. This book is not an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism as such, however.If you click on my name, you can read my reviews for the books I mentioned above or scroll down to them if you look up the books. This is the best book I have ever read as far as each and every Tibetan tradition of Buddhism goes.This book offers insight into the major traditions and various branches of Buddhism and also a small look into the lives of various Buddhist saints and how they were able to become who they became.A great read and very very informative.
Contains pretty much everything one would first want to know about exoteric Tibetan Buddhism than can be said clearly in under 600 pages: descriptions of the major schools, biographies of their most influential figures, explanations of the relevant teachings from each of the three turnings of the wheel of dharma, Tibetan cosmology, the importance of the Bodhisattva vow, etc. I personally came away feeling like all the right decisions were made on what to include and what to keep out, and all done in a very readable manner without ever seeming to become bogged down in detail. The author also uses some descriptions of personal experiences to great effect, and I got the impression that he's a highly committed practitioner who's really seeking to benefit others with this book.
This book was very informative. I wish I'd read it a couple of years ago as it would have saved me a lot of time and $ for other books on Buddhism I've bought and read that didn't lay it out in such an understandable way as Reggie Ray did. I'm awaiting the mail today for his next book.

People conflict their own bias with the goal of this book. The goal of this book is to teach all the beginner's level knowledge in politics. It's the same as taking a level 1 or 2 politics course in college. Obviously doesn't get too into depth, but that's not what it's meant to do. 1 star reviews against the information in the book is generally due to a fervorous idealogy. People need to keep their personal political preferences in check when submitting reviews.
As a Ph.D. in political science who formerly taught this subject at the college level, I was eager to see how the entire spectrum of political thought over the ages would be covered in a single volume.The effort in itself is admirable. Making this type of knowledge accessible to a popular audience is challenging, in more ways than one. Being interesting, concise and accurate all at the same time is certainly not easy. And it is inevitable that the process of selecting which information to present and how to present it will subject any such collection to criticism.A close look at many of the entries does indeed reveal some rough spots, to say the least. And the ideas are not always as easy to understand as they are clearly intended to be. Typographical errors and vocabulary issues also detract from the presentation.Though it wouldn’t be appropriate to consider this book any kind of definitive reference work, however, it can certainly serve the very positive purpose of exposing readers to a wide array of ideas and whetting their appetite for more detailed treatments.At the same time, I was positively impressed with the effort made to include various viewpoints and cultural perspectives. I hate to admit that I'm learning more from these books then I did when I went to school. In not the brightest man but these books make it clear who, what, when, where, and why politics and political change took place
You don't have to be a political Science student to love this book. it gives a succinct description of every political philosophy from Plato to present. this is a great volume for clarifying your own political positions as well as seeing the vast landscape of ideas that are never discussed in school or university. The book describes the human search for ideas that keep us from being beasts, yet at the same time keep the lights on and the water running.
My son loves it!! I love these books by DK publishing because they are perfect for inquisitive minds. We are trying to collect them all!
If you have read any other of the books from this series and liked them- you won't be disappointed in this book. Clear explanations, many subjects cover, and I didn't detect any "political bias" to the best of my knowledge.
Great Coffee Table Book, it's a fun 'intro to topic' book but like just about any textbook has a few errors so I wouldn't suggest for heavy learning purposes, but on the flip side they make the subject matter fun for novices (children, etc.)

This is a thoughtfully written work, full of wonderful photos. World class photos. Alex obviously really knows his stuff, and relates it simply and elegantly. This is not a book full of theoretical details...it's full of practical how-to information. I've been shooting DSLRs for about 8 years now, and have learned a lot in reading through only the first fourth of the book. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned professional, this book offers a lot of great insights and information. For beginners, after reading, you'll want to attend a class to perfect the concepts relayed in the book. Highly recommended! I wish quite a few of the photos were printed larger...many of the photos' finer details are obviously lost in the printing.
As an experienced photographer, my next step is to photograph while scuba diving. Given some basic experience with photography this book will teach you exactly how to take great photographs underwater. In fact, it very well put together, with great photographs and demonstrations of lighting positions. I took my time reading this book. Sometimes rereading sections when Alex cross referenced. I like the brief descriptions of the techniques, allowed me to absorb and understand the rational behind each technique. For this reason, I thought is was simple yet elegantly written and have left it on my coffee table as the photographs themselves teach a mastery of underwater compositions.
A very useful book for someone who has underwater photo experience. For the beginner it may be little daunting. To get the most out of the book you should be knowledgeable and have mastered the basics including actual in-water experience with UW cameras. My best advice would be to get the UW photography instruction book by Martin Edge and be reasonably familiar with that information and techniques contained in that book ( even though is is a little dated) and then progress to the Masterclass book. For me I learned some new techniques I haven't used or tried before and I have been shooting nearly 20 years beginning in the film era.
Not as good as I thought. It left me graving for more photos & pages. Technical instructions for great photos is better using layman's term than those texts which get too technical & sophisticated for beginners.
Love the format of a page or two per topic. These are bite-sized morsels of knowledge that will help you deal with the many very specific problems you face in underwater photography. Something about the format makes it much easier to recall how and why you'd use each particular technique. If you shoot underwater, just buy this book. You'll be happy you did.
Great pictures, good recommendations but not the book I was looking for to actually learn settings and flash better. This is more of a conceptual book.
Author is obviously enthused about the topic of light. Great, easy to read format of 1-2 page subject topics that can be digested step by step. Great format, thought promoting information. Just wonderful!

This story held my interest from the beginning to the very end. Knowing it was based on real people and their true story kept it intriguing. There were a few tedious parts that made it a little hard to get thru...lots of talk of different types of airplanes, but since it was "real life" I guess those details needed to be in the book. It was so interesting to be able to go into a man's mind & his thoughts thru his diary.
What adventures I would have had, travel, romance, mystery, success, facing the unknown all rolled into one fun and carefree life. Guess I was a little to serious about my flying...but for one great read I got to believe my life had taken a different flight path...I so enjoyed, I then encouraged my husband to do the next read. From his background of International Business he enjoyed the excitement of traveling the world through the eyes of early aviators..I encourage everyone to hop in the pilots seat...
A thoroughly engaging read which serves as a reminder of the challenges and daring demanded of pioneer aviators. Highly recommend.

Australian Jessie Miller flees to England in the 1920s looking for adventure and also to escape a loveless marriage. She soon meets the married William Lancaster, a pilot who is looking to top Charles Lindbergh's historic flight. The two devise a plan to set a new aviation record by flying from London to Melbourne as co-pilots. As the pair fall in love during the journey, they will soon realize success and happiness doesn't last forever. In less than a decade after their historic flight, William Lancaster is on trial for the murder of Jessie's biographer and lover, Haden Clarke. This is the true but often forgotten story of one of the biggest scandals in aviation of the 20th century.This is definitely a case of a real life story that made the headlines at the time but because so much time as passed is not quite as well-known today. The first half of the book focuses more on the background history of the couple and on the aviation feat itself and the success and fame they experienced because of it. The second half of the book shows their fall from fame and goes into great detail about Lancaster's murder trial.While the two pilots are certainly interesting and intriguing, the book dragged on a bit when Lancaster was away from Jessie and trying to earn money with Latin-American Airways. It's an important piece of the puzzle, but it was my least favorite part of the book. The trial itself was a good example of how some things were handled so differently back then. Given that I knew nothing about the pilots beforehand, I was actually shocked at how their story was wrapped up. Overall a good read and I particularly recommend if you are a fan of aviation and/or true crime.I won a free copy of this book in a giveaway but was under no obligation to post a review. I picked this up because, I thought I'd be reading about people I've already heard about this. That was until i read the first paragraph. I decided to continue anyway because, it seemed interesting. The opposite would soon prove true, though.A good part is the famous trip because, that was quite annoying to read. I gave it a pass at times because, Jessie had a reason to complain. Also, there were amazing moments.That said, it's imperative to not overlook how unpleasant the rest of it is. Not only due to the events leading up to the trial itself, there is Lancaster's last few entries. Granted, the trial was interesting to read, for the most part.All that said, this turned out to be an unpleasant read due to the subject. (That and the author-to a lesser extent.) However, this needs to be considered an imperative read because, this came out earlier this year. Imagine how much longer it would've taken if it wasn't released when it was.
In the 1920's, this is the story of two adventurous pilots - a man from England and a woman from Australia. They are married to other people when they team up to attempt the first flight from Europe to Australia in the era of Lindbergh. This book has crashes, sex, romance and even murder? This story would be hard to believe if it didn't really happen. Luckily for the author, the pair left highly detailed diaries and they were widely covered by the press. A nice non fiction look at the world of early aviation.
This book has it all. Adventure. Romance. And a window into a story that everyone should know about but somehow they don't. This author's clean, punchy writing style makes you feel like you're experiencing the rush of early aviation the way people felt it before it was common to jump on a plane every other month. That alone would make this book interesting...but then there's murder, mayhem, and a trial of the century (amazing how many of those there are) to boot. I'm wondering when this will be turned into a movie...it's inevitable.
