People conflict their own bias with the goal of this book. The goal of this book is to teach all the beginner's level knowledge in politics. It's the same as taking a level 1 or 2 politics course in college. Obviously doesn't get too into depth, but that's not what it's meant to do. 1 star reviews against the information in the book is generally due to a fervorous idealogy. People need to keep their personal political preferences in check when submitting reviews.
As a Ph.D. in political science who formerly taught this subject at the college level, I was eager to see how the entire spectrum of political thought over the ages would be covered in a single volume.The effort in itself is admirable. Making this type of knowledge accessible to a popular audience is challenging, in more ways than one. Being interesting, concise and accurate all at the same time is certainly not easy. And it is inevitable that the process of selecting which information to present and how to present it will subject any such collection to criticism.A close look at many of the entries does indeed reveal some rough spots, to say the least. And the ideas are not always as easy to understand as they are clearly intended to be. Typographical errors and vocabulary issues also detract from the presentation.Though it wouldn’t be appropriate to consider this book any kind of definitive reference work, however, it can certainly serve the very positive purpose of exposing readers to a wide array of ideas and whetting their appetite for more detailed treatments.At the same time, I was positively impressed with the effort made to include various viewpoints and cultural perspectives. I hate to admit that I'm learning more from these books then I did when I went to school. In not the brightest man but these books make it clear who, what, when, where, and why politics and political change took place
You don't have to be a political Science student to love this book. it gives a succinct description of every political philosophy from Plato to present. this is a great volume for clarifying your own political positions as well as seeing the vast landscape of ideas that are never discussed in school or university. The book describes the human search for ideas that keep us from being beasts, yet at the same time keep the lights on and the water running.
My son loves it!! I love these books by DK publishing because they are perfect for inquisitive minds. We are trying to collect them all!
If you have read any other of the books from this series and liked them- you won't be disappointed in this book. Clear explanations, many subjects cover, and I didn't detect any "political bias" to the best of my knowledge.
Great Coffee Table Book, it's a fun 'intro to topic' book but like just about any textbook has a few errors so I wouldn't suggest for heavy learning purposes, but on the flip side they make the subject matter fun for novices (children, etc.)

This is a thoughtfully written work, full of wonderful photos. World class photos. Alex obviously really knows his stuff, and relates it simply and elegantly. This is not a book full of theoretical details...it's full of practical how-to information. I've been shooting DSLRs for about 8 years now, and have learned a lot in reading through only the first fourth of the book. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned professional, this book offers a lot of great insights and information. For beginners, after reading, you'll want to attend a class to perfect the concepts relayed in the book. Highly recommended! I wish quite a few of the photos were printed larger...many of the photos' finer details are obviously lost in the printing.
As an experienced photographer, my next step is to photograph while scuba diving. Given some basic experience with photography this book will teach you exactly how to take great photographs underwater. In fact, it very well put together, with great photographs and demonstrations of lighting positions. I took my time reading this book. Sometimes rereading sections when Alex cross referenced. I like the brief descriptions of the techniques, allowed me to absorb and understand the rational behind each technique. For this reason, I thought is was simple yet elegantly written and have left it on my coffee table as the photographs themselves teach a mastery of underwater compositions.
A very useful book for someone who has underwater photo experience. For the beginner it may be little daunting. To get the most out of the book you should be knowledgeable and have mastered the basics including actual in-water experience with UW cameras. My best advice would be to get the UW photography instruction book by Martin Edge and be reasonably familiar with that information and techniques contained in that book ( even though is is a little dated) and then progress to the Masterclass book. For me I learned some new techniques I haven't used or tried before and I have been shooting nearly 20 years beginning in the film era.
Not as good as I thought. It left me graving for more photos & pages. Technical instructions for great photos is better using layman's term than those texts which get too technical & sophisticated for beginners.
Love the format of a page or two per topic. These are bite-sized morsels of knowledge that will help you deal with the many very specific problems you face in underwater photography. Something about the format makes it much easier to recall how and why you'd use each particular technique. If you shoot underwater, just buy this book. You'll be happy you did.
Great pictures, good recommendations but not the book I was looking for to actually learn settings and flash better. This is more of a conceptual book.
Author is obviously enthused about the topic of light. Great, easy to read format of 1-2 page subject topics that can be digested step by step. Great format, thought promoting information. Just wonderful!

This story held my interest from the beginning to the very end. Knowing it was based on real people and their true story kept it intriguing. There were a few tedious parts that made it a little hard to get thru...lots of talk of different types of airplanes, but since it was "real life" I guess those details needed to be in the book. It was so interesting to be able to go into a man's mind & his thoughts thru his diary.
What adventures I would have had, travel, romance, mystery, success, facing the unknown all rolled into one fun and carefree life. Guess I was a little to serious about my flying...but for one great read I got to believe my life had taken a different flight path...I so enjoyed, I then encouraged my husband to do the next read. From his background of International Business he enjoyed the excitement of traveling the world through the eyes of early aviators..I encourage everyone to hop in the pilots seat...
A thoroughly engaging read which serves as a reminder of the challenges and daring demanded of pioneer aviators. Highly recommend.
It was well researched and grabbed your attention from the very beginning and kept it throughout the book.
Australian Jessie Miller flees to England in the 1920s looking for adventure and also to escape a loveless marriage. She soon meets the married William Lancaster, a pilot who is looking to top Charles Lindbergh's historic flight. The two devise a plan to set a new aviation record by flying from London to Melbourne as co-pilots. As the pair fall in love during the journey, they will soon realize success and happiness doesn't last forever. In less than a decade after their historic flight, William Lancaster is on trial for the murder of Jessie's biographer and lover, Haden Clarke. This is the true but often forgotten story of one of the biggest scandals in aviation of the 20th century.This is definitely a case of a real life story that made the headlines at the time but because so much time as passed is not quite as well-known today. The first half of the book focuses more on the background history of the couple and on the aviation feat itself and the success and fame they experienced because of it. The second half of the book shows their fall from fame and goes into great detail about Lancaster's murder trial.While the two pilots are certainly interesting and intriguing, the book dragged on a bit when Lancaster was away from Jessie and trying to earn money with Latin-American Airways. It's an important piece of the puzzle, but it was my least favorite part of the book. The trial itself was a good example of how some things were handled so differently back then. Given that I knew nothing about the pilots beforehand, I was actually shocked at how their story was wrapped up. Overall a good read and I particularly recommend if you are a fan of aviation and/or true crime.I won a free copy of this book in a giveaway but was under no obligation to post a review. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
I picked this up because, I thought I'd be reading about people I've already heard about this. That was until i read the first paragraph. I decided to continue anyway because, it seemed interesting. The opposite would soon prove true, though.A good part is the famous trip because, that was quite annoying to read. I gave it a pass at times because, Jessie had a reason to complain. Also, there were amazing moments.That said, it's imperative to not overlook how unpleasant the rest of it is. Not only due to the events leading up to the trial itself, there is Lancaster's last few entries. Granted, the trial was interesting to read, for the most part.All that said, this turned out to be an unpleasant read due to the subject. (That and the author-to a lesser extent.) However, this needs to be considered an imperative read because, this came out earlier this year. Imagine how much longer it would've taken if it wasn't released when it was.
In the 1920's, this is the story of two adventurous pilots - a man from England and a woman from Australia. They are married to other people when they team up to attempt the first flight from Europe to Australia in the era of Lindbergh. This book has crashes, sex, romance and even murder? This story would be hard to believe if it didn't really happen. Luckily for the author, the pair left highly detailed diaries and they were widely covered by the press. A nice non fiction look at the world of early aviation.
This book has it all. Adventure. Romance. And a window into a story that everyone should know about but somehow they don't. This author's clean, punchy writing style makes you feel like you're experiencing the rush of early aviation the way people felt it before it was common to jump on a plane every other month. That alone would make this book interesting...but then there's murder, mayhem, and a trial of the century (amazing how many of those there are) to boot. I'm wondering when this will be turned into a movie...it's inevitable.

When my doctor suggested I try the FODMAP diet, I was very skeptical. I believed my decades-long IBS pain was too great for a mere diet to alleviate. I looked for a book that explained FODMAPs because I had never heard of them. I wanted a book that was published recently so it had the latest info, explained the science behind the diet (I doubted there was much), had step-by-step instructions (I don't enjoy diets or making up menus) and had easy recipes (I don't like to cook). How lucky I was to find Patsy Catsos' updated book. It felt like Patsy was in the room talking to me. Her book is frank, friendly, supportive and straightforward. She understands the pain and frustration of IBS, and of seeing doctors and taking pills for years but getting little relief. After I read the introduction, I skipped to the back and read the science section because I wasn't going on a diet unless it made scientific sense. Her explanations here and throughout the book are honest and easy to understand. Feeling somewhat less skeptical, I decided to try her 7-day diet, a detailed and varied list of exactly what to eat every meal of every day, including snacks. So much easier than figuring it all out for myself! After that, I was on my way. I used every tool in her book. She has done all the planning and thinking, so there are grocery lists, simple recipe and meal ideas with photos, forms you fill out to chart your progress (that was the most helpful part for me)...everything you need. I don't know how to tell you how shocked I was when this "elimination diet" worked for me. It took perseverance, but I did it, and the low-FODMAP way of eating literally changed my life. No more pain, no more side effects from pills, no more devastating IBS symptoms. I bought new clothes, clothes without expandable waists for all the IBS bloating. I eat most anything I want now, but with a few tweaks that have made me pain-free. Read and follow this book. You will not regret it. Patsy's words will get you through. I hope you have exactly the same success I did.
While I think this could benefit from some more recipes, there are really a lot of great recipes in here and I appreciate the side by side comparison with a "regular" recipe and how to make it low-fodmap. It both helps to reinforce easy substitutions for me, but also allows me to simultaneously make something a little more normal for my family so they get what they need. I really can't recommend this book enough if you're new to eating this way. I sincerely wish I had this book when I first needed to do the elimination. I'm so glad I have this now for when I have a flare up and need to knock it back down again. It can seem so incredibly overwhelming and I know I'm not the only person who walked into a grocery store and nearly cried because I couldn't eat anything. This guide will help you learn what and how you can eat and the pain can and will subside. Eating doesn't have to hurt and be scary.
As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) the latest edition of The IBS Elimination Diet and Cookbook by Patsy Catsos is a welcome edition to my teaching tools when working with clients with IBS and the low FODMAP diet. I am thrilled to recommend this book to all my clients with IBS who are struggling with symptoms and seeking relief. The book is laid out beautifully with easy to follow recipes and instructions on how to implement the Low FODMAP diet. A great book for beginners as well as seasoned dietitians. This book is my go-to resource for IBS. The authors reference list at the end of the book is extensive. The author has written a book which is clearly backed by science and evidence based nutrition practices.
Excellent! I tried apps, online blogs & research, other books, and all I got was conflicting information. Even on how long the elimination diet should be. It was frustrating & annoying; I had "gone without" the foods I loved for three weeks and still had symptoms. I called a registered dietician who specializes in the GI issues, & she told me to read this book, do the food plan for one week, then call her back. She said if I follow Ms Catsos's one week plan, I will most likely feel better. Ms Catsos explains why the conflicting information, gives seven days of menus, a shopping list for the week and recipes. The recipes are surprisingly good; fortunately there are many great recipes & her plan has flexibility. She teaches how to modify recipes, what foods should be in one's pantry, and how to reintroduce foods. She explains how to customize the plan. She says not to graze & explains why. None of the blogs or books I read said this. That suggestion alone made a huge difference!
I'm a kindle user but I bought the paperback version because I figured I would want to write and highlight the book. I've been having GI issues and my doctor recommended I try this elimination diet (Low FODMAP). I read most of this book on Sunday, grocery shopped, and prepped a few lunches that day. I'm on day 2 and I feel a little bit better. I'm excited to find out what exactly has been making me feel so horrible. This book is very informative. You will want to buy the paperback version so you can write on the pages. :)I'm not really into cooking so I don't know if I will ever try any of the recipes. They look okay though. The sample meals for a week were a helpful guide.

Amazing indepth and thorough analysis of AbleTrend trading system.
This is an excellent approach to the concept of trading in any market and a particularly elegant method of trading the financial markets. The author has done an incredible work in explaining the "basic" laws of the universe in how to apply them in trading. It is worth every penny of it.
This book clearly defines how to use abletrend for the long term. Overall it shows that abletrend is great software to help you pick those long term trends. This software will not help you get rich quick it will however help you make informed decisions over the long term with an existing strategy. For example I use able trend to achieve 100 pips per day while trading the forex markets. I do not always achieve my goal but 3 out of 5 days I can hit my goal with some real consistency. Overall this system has really helped me trade well for the long term.
It is an interesting book. The author did spend time and effort to develop the system. It is yet for the users to judge if the system works.

It is abut Trend Following, placing stops at a point somewhat above previoous high or low tradijng site, lots of examples, & unfortunately the author writes like one talks rather than like one should wreite i.e. recircles or repeats what has been said. the 268 pagers could be edited down to perhaps 50 pages. Normally retired older patients present their illness story three to five times, a retired Professor perhaps twice, a retired Navy Captain "ONCE" & I hacve been taught to say what you are going to say, say it, & summarize what you said, aas such I find "lwritting like you talk" a time waister.
I am a position trader & use the AbleTrend software on daily & weekly charts. The assistance in seeing clear support & resistance levels, & the guidance & discipline in setting precise stops is invaluable. Losses are small & easy to handle. I naturally get stopped out by the market at the right time & I am perfectly ok with that. Also the system keeps me in long enough to make profits much larger than the losses. I love the clarity & simplicity expressed in the book & in the AbleTrend software. It helps me trade relaxed, clear & without fear.
I expected this to be an infomercial for their indicator, and for the most part that is the case. There is some good info on trend and the logic behind quantifying a trend.There is some very useful I formation on how to trade their indicator that could be applied to a lot of other trend indicators as well.Based on what I read in this book, most people that I've seen trading this indicator, or its many imitators, are using it the wrong way.

I'm pretty sure this book is what you think it is. It's researched well enough, well written, and mostly interesting. There were a few points of interest that I don't remember being covered in the Isaacson bio, which was necessary for me to enjoy this one, as there is a lot of overlap in the way Jobs's story is told in the two biographies. However, this one is mostly a surface rendering, which may suit you, depending on your reading habits. If you want to get a sense of a broader, more compelling narrative, I recommend Isaacson's biography of Jobs. I recommend this one to anyone with an interest in Jobs/Apple and not enough time or courage to pick up Isaacson's tome.
The book is well organized and well written. It provides the reader with an overview of Jobs' life and Apple origin and spectacular growth to become the giant that is today. On the other hand, it's unbelievable that a person with so many character flaws could achieve all the extraordinary goals that Jobs achieve on his life. Perhaps,it was his tenacity, visionary ideals and persistence to pursue perfection, and the way he view life , all traits that help him become a legend.
This book was assigned to me to read for my junior year in high school. I was surprised at how easily the book captured my attention considering I only read books when it is for a grade. I enjoyed the organization as well as the visuals the author provided (I even found myself googling early Apple products and commercials). Overall this is a smooth read and I finished earlier than I thought I would.
Great paperback book my husband wanted.. I read product description and compared to other books on Steve Jobs and this was exactly what I thought it was going to be when I received it. Very satisfied with this purchase.

The kids love this book and its fun to see where you end up st. But it takes a long time to answer all the questions and score them so they needed an adult to help
The book sounds similar to a "Which ________ are you?" quiz on social media. But it's more fun and more complete. And it has 100 percent fewer grammar and spelling mistakes!The Divergent series' fans will really enjoy this entertaining look at the motivations of Abnegation, Condor, Amity, Dauntless and Erudite. Just like sorting yourself into a Harry Potter house, this is a neat way for fans to dive into the stories. I really liked the concept behind this book, but I think it has one fatal flaw. I don't think their system for tallying up the quiz answers was really accurate. I got Dauntless, which didn't feel right to me at all, but that was how the math worked out on their system. They put a specific answer that is supposed to be the "Divergent" answer with each question, and that seemed odd to me.It was fun to play with this, and I hope my students (for whom I really bought this) enjoy it, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for an accurate answer.EDIT: After writing this, I had a student take it, and her answers all seemed to follow the same pattern, and thus her result made sense. I decided then to go back and more closely analyze my results. Basically, all the 2s represent Abnegation, 4s represent Amity, 6s Candor, 8s Dauntless, 10s Erudite, and 12s Divergent. I tallied the number of answers I got for each category. I had 12 Amity answers, 12 Erudite answers, and 10 Candor answers. Basically I'm Divergent. This method made MUCH more sense to me!
It is an interesting book but be warned it assumes gender with many of the questions.
