My bona fides: I have professionally negotiated for over thirty years. Do it daily. I've taken approximately 20 hours of graduate study in negotiation and conflict resolution. I occasionally lecture on the subject. My rating: This is one of the two best books anyone can read on negotiation. The other is Cialdini's famous, "Influence: The Art and Science of Persuasion." While there are many good books on the subject, I can't think of any others that are as complete and useful as these.Advice: Remember that negotiation is a practice. You will be best aided by these books by taking a chapter at a time and practice the ideas and techniques. Practice them on your family, on your colleagues and on your friends. (Forget pets. Dogs are too obliging and cats too indifferent.)
My guess is around 70% of my purchases are made on Amazon: it's a lot of stuff, both for home and for my company. This is the first item (across all categories) that I've written a review for. I'm compelled because this book has changed my life, and I suspect it can change yours — What do you have to lose by reading it?I thought I’d learned what I needed to know about negotiation. I went to a prestigious business school and took their negotiation class, learning all about Getting Yes, BATNA, and other fancy acronyms. I’d also had to bargain my share in both work and personal life. Yet, I felt like the tools I’d been given were meant for some alternate reality where people are totally dispassionate, rational robots, doing math in their heads to get to logical outcomes. The negotiations I’d been in with were instead with passionate, irrational (including myself) humans, sometimes getting angry or sad, often making decisions that didn’t “make any sense†(to me). I was pretty sure the negotiation outcomes we were getting to were subpar, both for me and for them: a lot of splitting the difference, mostly to make the negotiations — which felt uncomfortable for all parties — stop.Note, when I mean “negotiationâ€, I’m speaking pretty broadly: from “negotiating" with my fiancée on who should walk the dog tonight, to negotiating with an employee on why this feature needed to be built urgently, to negotiating with an angry customer who’d called me angry about something, to negotiating with my parents on wedding plans, the list goes on. Each negotiation tougher and more emotional than the next, yet with tools that told me emotions didn’t matter. Huh?I don’t remember how I came across Never Split the Difference, but man, am I glad I did. The book exposed me to a whole different way of negotiating, questioning the rational toolkit I’d been given in business school and replacing it with a more human set of tools. This set based on psychology and understanding of normal human emotions. It builds on empathy and active listening skills, layers on ways to label emotions and ask open-ended calibrated questions. It includes polite ways to say “no†without offending the other party, and many more. Most importantly it builds a framework that lets you deeply understand what the other party needs, wants, and desires, and work with them to achieve an outcome where you get your goals met — without ever “splitting the difference†again. And it has worked wonders. Since reading this book, I have:- Forged a better relationship with my fiancée by actively listening to her before jointly finding solutions- Negotiated successful resolutions to emotionally charged topics with parents and friends- Brought angry customers — who felt we had failed them — back from the brink to trusting us again- Forged a better relationship with my business partners by understanding how they value time, silence, relationships, surprises, etc…- Gotten discounts on things that I didn’t think could be discounted, just by using my name- Gotten to the front of the waiting line at busy restaurants- Said no to bad deals, because no deal is better than a bad one- the list goes on.I warn you that this book is the start of a rabbit hole that you might want to keep digging down. I’ve recommended this book to anyone who will listen, personally bought it 29 times as a gift for friends & coworkers alike, taken an online class (taught by the author’s son, a brilliant negotiator in his own right), etc...Negotiation, in the broadest sense as described above, is something I want to become an expert in, because I now understand that every conversation is a negotiation. This is likely the most useful skill you can learn and apply. It all started with this book. Are you too busy to read it?
WHY THIS BOOK MATTERS: We negotiate or persuade dozens of times a day. Then there’s the big stuff that changes the course of life: getting a raise; landing a job offer; buying a car or house. Most of us had no formal training in negotiation, or were taught incorrectly. This book is your secret weapon for mad success.MAIN CONCEPT: Tactical empathy: “This is listening as a martial art, balancing the subtle behaviors of emotional intelligence and the assertive skills of influence, to gain access to the mind of another person.â€IS IT FUN TO READ: Finished it in a day. The book’s full of riveting life-and-death hostage negotiations, and Voss spins a damn good yarn.OKAY, BUT IS IT USEFUL?: I highlighted 109 passages and took 20pp of single-spaced notes. There is so much crazy useful stuff in this book that it would be a bargain at 100x the price. For example, Voss advocates getting to “No†before getting to “Yes.†To those schooled in academic negotiation, this may seem heretical. But it makes all kinds of sense: letting your adversary say a solid “no†gives them a feeling of safety, security and control -- a great starting point to a negotiation. The technique of asking calibrated open-ended questions is pure gold (e.g. “How do I do that?†or “What’s important to you about that?â€) Funny thing is that I’ve been teaching that technique for years, but only now understand *why* it works so well (thanks, Chris!).Then there’s the step-by-step protocol for negotiating your salary and the 6-step Ackerman bargaining model. There’s mirroring: you repeat people’s words verbatim, so they feel understood. There’s labeling, where you identify the emotion behind what people are saying, thereby deepening empathy. Great quote: “Good negotiators, going in, know they have to be ready for possible surprises; great negotiators aim to use their skills to reveal the surprises they are certain exist.â€What I really like about this book was that its techniques were honed by real-life negotiations with actual bad guys. During his 24 years as FBI Lead Hostage Negotiator, time and time again Voss got people released from the grips of determined terrorists and kidnappers. If the techniques work in those critical situations, surely they’re good enough to help you negotiate a raise. In the end, this is a book about not just being good at negotiation, but being great at life. “Never Split the Difference†is serious wisdom, every bit of it earned, conveyed with great humor, storytelling and insight. Read it to be a more effective human.-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., Happiness Engineer; Speaking Coach, KNP Communications; author, The Tao of Dating: The Smart Woman's Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible

Amazon.com Review
If you haven't already read Tikki Tikki Tembo, you've probably heard at least someone recite the deliriously long name of its protagonist: Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo, by now a famous refrain in most nursery schools. In this beautiful edition--complete with line and wash illustrations by artist Blair Lent--Arlene Mosel retells an old Chinese folktale about how the people of China came to give their children short names after traditionally giving their "first and honored" sons grand, long names. Tikki tikki tembo (which means "the most wonderful thing in the whole wide world") and his brother Chang (which means "little or nothing") get into trouble with a well, are saved by the Old Man with the Ladder, and change history while they're at it. Tikki Tikki Tembo is a perfect book to read aloud, but don't be surprised if you find yourself joining the ranks of its chanting followers. (Picture book)

“Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo is the full name of the firstborn son in the Chinese family of this story....This old folktale of what happens when the boy falls into a well...should make excellent read-aloud material....Bright, active, and delightfully expressive.†―School Library Journal“Just right for storytelling and tongue-twisting repeating, and . . . for reading aloud.†―Kirkus Reviews“On spacious, uncluttered pages the artist has extended the story with wonderfully droll ink-and-wash drawings that combine imaginative beauty with a true Chinese spirit.†―The Horn Book

Great book. This is fun to read and has a nice lesson. As a reading specialist and English teacher, I wish the critics and book banners would go away. So what if it is not completely authentic. It's a fiction book not a history or cultural lesson. It makes me wonder what these people read to children because if everything has to be totally accurate, animals don't talk, and then there is Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny...get it?
In a nutshell: Tikki Tikki Tembo as retold by Arlene Mosel is a fabled Chinese fable about two little brothers. The oldest one is purportedly given a long impressive name meaning “The Most Wonderful Thing in the Whole Wide World†as he is to inherit his parents’ beloved possessions. His younger brother is considered some sort of back-up and is given a short name (Chang) which means “Little or Nothing†or Clueless Playmate or something. Wiki-the-source-of-all-truth-pedia, states that the book is controversial because it may be a Japanese story told about China and does not portray Chinese culture accurately. I plan to seek guidance from my Chinese family members on where this story lands on the offensiveness scale. So,the boys are monkeying around and Clueless Playmate falls into the well. Golden Boy runs to his mother and they get a ladder-wielding-tree-napping-old-man to save him named “Old Man With The Ladder.†He pumps the boy’s leg like a water pump to revive him which must be some sort of olden time CPR.Of course the little boys are monkeying around in the bathtub AGAIN, I mean near the well, despite the close brush with death and this time Golden Boy falls into the well. His brother runs for help and after repeating John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt four or five times, almost passes out from exhaustion, leaving his evil mother childless. Fortunately, Old Man With The Ladder comes to his senses and rescues Golden Boy with the same water pump CPR procedure. And the story concludes that this is why Chinese families name their kids little, short names.Families can talk about: How would you feel if your name meant Little or Nothing? Do you know what your name means? Why is the mom so mean and dismissive of the younger brother? Why don’t the little boys mind their mother? Do you mind your mother? How confident are you about that answer? What is your game plan if you fall into a well or deep water? What should you do? And if you see your brother fall in? Why do you think swimming lessons are important? Which is more fun to say: Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo or John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt?
I remember this book from childhood and loved it. The name of the little boy is oh so fun to say BUT as an adult the message of this book is horrifying. The mom is absent and neglectful of her younger son, the prized first son is left permenantly scared, and no one learns a lesson except to give the first favored son a short name...I’m sorry what?!? This book did not stand the test of time for me. But I would love to see it revised with a different ending. The illustrations are lovely and well tiki tiki tembo is super fun to say.
One of the most read books when I was a kid. Wanted to share it with my kids. This is a story about two brothers who care for each other. The youngest tries to get help for his big brother who has fallen in the well, but because of the older brother’s super long name he has difficulty expressing the emergency to adults to get help in time.
I read this as a child growing up, it was my favorite book. Of course like most people as you get older you throw away or get rid of things from your childhood and teenage days. When my niece started kindergarten I knew reading was going to be required and i wanted to share with her my favorite story from childhood, so i purchased this book to read to her and hope she will appreciate it as much as i did. Well needless to say she does share my appreciation or enjoyment of this book, but it matters not because i still enjoy this book as an adult.
When I was a child I loved this book so I knew I had to purchase it to read to my children. My daughter has memorized Tikki Tikki's full name and enjoys reciting it with me. This is a classic book! The moral of the story may be a little politically incorrect these days but I don't dwell on that part and if a parent wanted to, they can skip that last page. It's such a fun book to read.
My mom read this to me as a kid, and it was one of my favorites. As an adult I’m not sure how I feel about the cultural messages in the book, but it’s definitely fun to read out loud and the illustrations are pleasing to look at
I ordered this for my boss's granddaughter because it kept coming up in conversation and how I could still remember the kid's whole name (but not his brother's short, simple name, I kept thinking it was Chris, believe it's Chang). The artwork is fun and the book is so absurd, but nostalgia.

This book completes our set. They are easy to read, contain interesting, off beat information you wouldn't find in other history books: they're awesome. We have/are using them as part of our US History curriculum. I am using them with a high schooler and he loves them.
Super series and super book. Makes history come alive. However, this is the most boring of all the books. Having lived through many of the events, I find her writing balanced but boring. One MAJOR complaint against the later books is that she confuses democracy with affluency equality. They are very separate, and she blurs lines there that can become dangerous for the mindset and worldview. Otherwise, EXCELLENT book and series.
The is the BEST series by an amazing storyteller. Author Joy Hakim writes in such a way that middle school --and upper elementary students can read and appreciate history. I would purchase every book she ever wrote and will write. A+
My 16-year-old son reads his books for fun! He loves how it is written in the story like form with lots of interesting facts and pictures :-)
very good reading all must read
I read it with my 10 year old son to,learn American history

I purchased several books on Vue.js and this book is one of the best. It offers clear explanations and the book's topics are presented in a way that builds a good understanding of how to use the framework. The author clearly describes the code and what it is doing. I recommend this to anyone that is new to Vue.js.
Easy to read and understand. Author does a great job of introducing topics in order of foundational steps. I’d recommend this book to anybody looking to learn VueJS.
All in all this is a pretty good book. I've got 8 months Vue experience and so of course there is plenty of room to learn, and in chapter 3 I learned about a good use case for the beforeUpdate lifecycle hook, and in the next chapter I learned about v-model modifiers. Furthermore there are sections on routing (which I have passing exposure to) and VueX (which I have no exposure to) that I'm looking forward to.The book is not without it's shortcomings however. For one it does not sufficiently define its audience. Early on the impression (introduction?) is given that the reader's level could be as minimal as a beginning web developer, but this is contradicted by the needless reference in chapter one to "functional programming idioms", which is a decidedly advanced topic, but then later the author(s) decide they need to explain the ternary operator, which is intermediate at best.Furthermore the book propagates misinformation about the Virtual DOM. It is *not* especially speedy; google for "Memoized DOM" to read more. Also there are some technical errors. In chapter 2 there is a flawed use of parseInt that doesn't account for a string value such as "123-abc" being transformed to the number 123. Or there are bad examples, such as in chapter 4 where the author(s) even mention that they will "assume ZIP Codes in our app don’t start with a zero". Since they can though, they should have chosen a different example. Finally, earlier this autumn the creator of Vue spoke at a conference about the upcoming version Vue 3.0, so this book may become dated fairly quickly.
I've read a few of Manning's "In Action" series mainly because they go through creation of a real-world (or close enough) app. Each chapter builds on the other. Vuejs In Action mildly differs from this approach given how the book is structured. It is in that structure that it reads more like a cookbook, since each chapter has small coding exercises to illustrate the topic being explained. However, it doesn't follow the In Action format I'm accustomed to.The book's app is that of a pet store, but the presentation is choppy due to the aforementioned cookbook structure. I would have like each snippet explained and then code used to support that as it relates to the app being made. It should build upon previous chapters. The layout of this book is not like this.Check out the book's GitHub page to get an idea of what I'm talking about. You'll see all the various snippets, but none of them really build on each other as with MongoDB In Action and Electron In Action, to name a couple.

I would like to believe Chua’s thesis, that the interest-group warfare we have right now is something — she calls it Tribalism — but when something is everything then maybe it’s nothing. Her fascinating and well-written descriptions of the various groups into which American democracy is dissolving make very good reading — must-reading, for anyone interested in The USA or The World, in this Age of Trump and Age of Asia. But whether it all boils down to Tribalism, or to anything else understandable or manageable, much less a characterization of how things-political will proceed going forward, well, I’m still a sceptic — still it seems like a dissolution, to me, simply a mess now, and Trump simply a bottom-feeder opportunist taking advantage.I hope I’m wrong and she’s right, as I’d love to believe that we somehow can bring order out of all the chaos she so elegantly describes. But I fear it’s just chaos, in fact — that her Tribalism is simply what’s left-over when systems fail, the primal soup from which we emerged in the 15th century to found our nation-states, and to which we seem to be returning now that our Terrible-20th century Long War and Pax Americana are gone.Everyone everywhere needs to read her book, I think — it is that good, and that general, and all of us around the globe need some reassurance now that we do not face just-chaos, in our 2 great paradigm shifts from Manufacturing to Digital, and from Empires to Asia — but as we grasp for straws, and I fear Tribalism may be one such, we must remember Yeats’ warning that this may be, only,Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,— and that Trump and various other similar disasters elsewhere may be our own “rough beast, its hour come round at lastâ€. I’d still prefer liberal democracy, a 2-Party System, multilateral treaties and foreign policies, and universalized Human Rights, over the tribalized-world Chua appears to be recommending here.
Another great book by Amy Chua that helps explain overlooked and misunderstood cultural forces across the world. Particularly fascinating, the chapters on Iraq and Afghanistan, while concise, cover an amazing amount of material. Adding a vital new dimension (tribalism) to the way Americans should think about our foreign policy in the Middle East, Chua is essential reading - along with George Packer and Steve Coll - for anyone who wants to be considered informed on the subject of America's most recent wars.Subtly provocative, Chua's analysis of domestic politics transcends political parties. Instead of taking sides, she makes clear-eyed critiques of the ways both parties have contributed to our current polarization and divisiveness. Members of BOTH parties will no doubt be challenged (and perhaps even angered!) by different parts of the book, but republicans, democrats and independents alike would all do well to read the book and think deeply about Chua's argument. The book is filled with fascinating statistics and studies that will make you think differently about things like occupy wall street, the rise of Trump, immigration, and economic inequality. And though Political Tribes is truly harrowing at times, I definitely found it to be, ultimately, a hopeful book.
Amy Chua was a child in Han Chinese dispersion. She understands tribes. Her 2003 book, World on Fire, showed superb understanding. This book, politically current (it notes Bannon left White House), gives better insight than media coverage. She describes our stress, clearly shows its causes, and ends by asking "is there a way out?" Her answer, optimistic, is in a short Epilogue. More than a must read, it is also a must think. My thinking focuses on tribal attacks against peaceful interactions forming her optimism. Tribal attacks need to lose. That may need more from us than "wait and see", so readers need to think. In thinking, there is optimism. America's history showed early tribal conflict, with Hamilton's faction seeking British institutions, so bad that Jefferson left retirement to become our third President and block Hamilton's attacks made through Washington and Adams. We had other tribal conflicts. Some were handled well on the first try. Others needed several tries. Some yet unresolved need another try. America survives. It is too important for human freedom not to survive. We are still the only example of bottom-up partitioned Presidential democracy, where 13 States diverse in economy and religion agreed in 1787 to share defense, diplomacy, and treasury, then over many years added 37 more States diverse in economy and religion asking to join that sharing. States are peers, with Constitutions and governments. Americans can and do choose partitions. The world needs a partition example to survive. Every stressed country in Amy Chua's chapters needs partitions to keep tribes from excess contact fueling their fires. America needs new kinds of partitions keeping fire breathing attackers like bots from contact with people who interact without fire. Those people are Amy Chua's optimism. Her book points the way. We can't only wait and see.

Who Was Coretta Scott King? It was a cool and drizzly day in early spring 1968. Coretta Scott King stepped off an airplane in Memphis, Tennessee. Days earlier, on April 4, her husband, Martin Luther King Jr., had been shot and killed downtown in the city. Coretta was now a widow at age forty-one. She was heartbroken and tired, but determined. Martin was the leader of the civil rights movement to give black Americans the same rights as white people. He had planned to lead a protest march in Memphis. Now he was gone. But the march was still being held. Why? Martin would have wanted it. Coretta knew that. And she knew she had to be there, too. She’d always been by his side when he needed her. And he needed her now to carry on. Some friends urged Coretta not to go. They feared her life would be in danger. She didn’t listen. At the march, Coretta and three of her children linked arms at the front of the crowd. And they began to walk. The protesters—as many as forty-two thousand by one estimate—marched for about one mile. People lined the street as they passed. No one cheered or waved or shouted. They were too sad. At city hall, there were many speeches about Martin. Then came Coretta’s turn. She talked about his life as a husband and father. Finally, she said, “How many men must die before we can really have a free and true and peaceful society? How long will it take?” After, her oldest daughter said, “Mommy, you were real good.” Coretta hoped her presence had given people strength. Being there gave Coretta strength, too. She felt more determined than ever to carry on the cause of civil rights. She’d always been Martin’s partner in the struggle for equality. Martin believed that he and Coretta “walked down this path together.” That was true. Coretta Scott King had believed in peace and justice—right from the very beginning. Chapter 1: The Scott Family Coretta Scott was born on April 27, 1927, outside of Marion, Alabama, in the small town of Heiberger, Alabama. Sometimes the area is called the Black Belt because of its rich black soil. But in the 1800s, the term had another meaning. It referred to the black slaves who had once worked the cotton fields on large farms called plantations. Their lives were harsh, filled with backbreaking work and cruel treatment. Slaves were considered property. Like a horse or a piece of furniture. They had no rights. White owners could whip them, sell them, or work them to death. After the Civil War ended in 1865, all slaves were freed. Like many others, Willis Scott stayed right where he was. In Alabama. In time, Willis managed to buy his own land. Over the years, generations of Scotts farmed those fields, working hard and raising families. In 1920, Coretta’s father, Obadiah “Obie” Scott married Bernice McMurry. They built a small, plain home with two rooms: a kitchen and a bedroom. Soon, they had a family: Edythe, Coretta, and Obie Jr. Slavery had ended over sixty years ago. But life was still difficult for African Americans. In Alabama, and other parts of the South, black people were segregated from white people. That means laws kept them separated. Obie worked at a sawmill, where logs were cut into boards for building. By the time Coretta was born, he had saved enough to buy a truck. Now he could work for himself, hauling trees. Then, in 1929, when Coretta was a toddler, the Great Depression hit. It was a time of great hardship throughout the United States. Millions of people lost jobs. And Obie lost work. The Scott home only had a fireplace for heat and no running water or electricity. But the Scotts got by. They ate vegetables from their own garden, and had eggs from their own chickens. Everyone in the family worked hard. Coretta didn’t mind. She liked being busy. As soon as she could walk, she’d follow Grandfather Scott to the fields to help. At around age six, Coretta started tending the family garden. By ten, she was working in the cotton fields. She felt proud of her cotton-picking skills. Strong and strong-willed, Coretta boasted she could pick cotton faster than any boy her age. Coretta had fun, too. She was a tomboy. She loved being outdoors. Nothing scared her—not hitting wasp nests or baiting fishhooks with worms. Indoors, music filled the Scott home. Coretta’s parents had one of the first Victrolas, an early record player. They owned books, too. Her parents read nursery rhymes and fairy tales to Coretta, Edythe, and Obie again and again. Faith was important to the Scotts, and much of Coretta’s life centered around church. Every Sunday, men put on suits and women wore their best hats and dresses. The Scott children had to walk four miles to go to Sunday school. Grandfather Scott would open the service by singing a hymn. Coretta loved the music. It all gave Coretta a sense of pride and history. But there was a whole world outside Heiberger. It was filled with different rules for black people and white people. In elementary school, Coretta saw that for the first time.

Poorly arranged. Difficult for students to read if looking for information specific to Scott-King. Too much historical background information (albeit interesting) about the times which interrupts chronological facts about Scott-King. I purchased this for middle school, but found that weaker students were distracted by the additional information which could have been offered as foot notes or in a separate section.
I think this is a fun book and it’s what I keep as one of my favorite black history book collection.
very very interesting book for kids. My kids read these who was books all the time. Great book!
Great overview
Love this Book my child took a book report on this book and was the only one who got an A in her class! C:
