Marshall Trimble is a great historian. This is just one of his works. The format is user-friendly in that if you are on a road trip you can find out about the history of the area you're visiting. Also makes great arm-chair reading. I've lived in Arizona about 56 years and I've learned a lot about my state from Trimble. Since it has a 1986 copyright date, I wonder if an updated version would be good . . . I'd buy one.

I met the author. Very interesting fellow. We use this book on every road trip and it is so nice to know the history of the places we are driving by or visiting. A must if you live and travel in Arizona!

Shipped quickly with Prime. The box the flash cards is in is very thick and sturdy. The cards themselves are a bit thinner than I assumed they'd be so I don't let my kids handle them since kids are rough with everything! They were very affordable though so I'd purchase again regardless. The words themselves are exactly what we needed and better than I hoped for! My daughter is terrible at spelling and vocab in general. I love that these have the example sentence underneath. I'm able to say the word, read the example, ask her to guess what the word means, then try to spell it (then show her the card to help you remember it for next time). And there are soooo many words that come in this pack that after receiving, I haven't needed to purchase any more flash cards. It's been about 2 months now. I think these will last all school year. My daughter is in 6th grade but reads at a 3rd to 4th grade level. I wanted to give her a little challenge with these and they're perfect.
I am concerned my sons are not getting vocabulary and spelling words at the elementary school level. I find these cards a great way to supplement what I feel is an important part of elementary education. My husband goes over them after dinner and they have picked up on them quickly. We also have them practice spelling the words. When I was in elementary school, we had vocabulary tests, spelling bees, etc. I'm a great speller today and I attribute it to a solid foundation started in elementary school. My boys are awful spellers and they get marked down on essays because of this but it's never been a part of the curriculum. How the times have changed!!!
Good flash cards for expanding kids vocabulary. Seems like many of these words are beyond what a standard 5th grader is expected to know. These have helped my son learn more worlds which in turns increases his reading comprehension.I'd buy higher grade cards if available.
These cards are amazing. The word in the front with a sentence to give more context and on the back the word appears again with how to pronounce it as well as a definition. The cards are not thin contrary to some reviews and the box is an nice way to see how many they’ve learned along the way. I highly recommend these cards!
I would love to give these cards 5 stars but I cant for the price of the cards these cards are extremely flimsy feels like construction paper. However the concept is good so I dont regret my purchase.Update- 9/26/2012 Although these cards are flimsy they have been extremely helpful .I suggest buying the grade 3 through 5th grade vocabulary these cards have improved my childrens reading , writing and comprehension.I hope you find this helpful.
These are what you see. My only complaint is that ever flash card is on very flimsy paper. It feels almost thinner than normal printer paper. The problem with that, is it's not really possible for my son to just take these and go through them himself for practice.
Just make your own cards. These aren't very sturdy and there's no directions on the best way to progress through the set. I spent rearranging cards to follow a more logical learning route.
cheap thin paper is not good for flash cards. should be card stock by definition...... these will wear out and be ruined very quickly

You really can't imagine walking in someone else's shoes, not with this story. No matter how we try to understand how they survived this was a mystery and a miracle. I understand that now. For the first half of the book I couldn't recommend it. Now I can. I think the first half of the book had important facts, but the second half has the heart and soul of the repercussions of the event. I feel the author did a wonderful job of writing enough details so that you felt you were there and not too many details to overwhelm you or wear you down with information you didn't need. He did an amazing job of reminding you about details of each person and their character. He was giving background information for each person, including family members, so that you could keep track of the changes. I think the reviews I read gave me too high of an expectation for this story. After having finished it I understand how involved a reader could be after learning details of the emotional struggles as the rescue took place and following their return to their home life. This does not mean the story will be appreciated by those who expect more action or for this story to change the readers life. Although it should make you appreciate simple things in your daily life.I do recommend going online and look at a map of the mine before you read this.
With just a few hours to go before their long-awaited deliverance, a few of the miners look back in wonder on their nine-week imprisonment in the bowels of the collapsed mine, the San Jose, in the mountains of Chile. Together, they'd feared certain death, spent weeks preparing to die, then watched what scant food they had slowly disappear.Soon, amazingly, it would actually be over.One of them looks around at the would-be tomb and feels a generous kind of wonder, a near reverence that transforms the dark pit of death into sacred ground. He actually writes a letter to leave behind, and signs it: "'Mario Sepulveda lived here from August 5 to October 13," then, with the note, adds some pictures he's recently given through the portal created when a giant drill finally bore its way down to them and opened up what seemed miraculous communication. Mario Sepulveda is awed by what he's been through. He's on his knees in reverence.Raul Bustos will have none of that. Bustos gathers rocks and flings them, one after another, into the abyss as if striking a beast now clumsily sauntering away into the darkness. He scribbles obscenities on the walls in permanent markers, blaming the mine owners for the misery he's gone through. "I wanted it all to go away," Bustos told Hector Tobar, who chronicled the entire story in Deep, Down Dark. With every bit of his being, Bustos wants the mine to disappear from his consciousness and the world's: "I didn't want anyone else to see it, to come and say later, 'See, look, this is where Raul Bustos slept.' It was all very private, and it was mine.""The earth is giving birth to its 33 children after having them inside her for two months and eight days." Victor Segovia, at the very same moment, looks back at what he and the others had gone through and sees something else altogether. Segovia had been the main chronicler of the miners' experiences, his memories and insights the only day-to-day written record of what exactly happened to 33 men trapped in the heat and night of a collapsed mine all of them believed would be a graveyard.Finally, Victor draws a heart inside his diary and writes "I LOVE SAN JOSE," because, Hector Tobar says, "the mine is like him: flawed and neglected but worthy of respect and love."How three men react to the very same awful experience--just over two months of near starvation in the dark neighborhood of death--is a marvel because we are, all of us, somehow perfectly unique. There are no clones. One of the men makes the tomb a cathedral, another a veritable hell, yet another casts the darkness as a lover. All three men are thoughtful; all three men are deadly serious. All three men have undergone an experience unlike anything anyone else in the entire world has, and now all three are about to be delivered into life up on the surface of the earth, into light, and love.But when they look back, what they see couldn't be more different."What a piece of work is man," says Hamlet. They'd gone a long ways down the road toward death. And then returned.As amazing at it sounds, their story, as told by Hector Tobar in Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine and the Miracle that Set Them Free, as amazing and truly unique as it was, is our story too.No one reading these words spent all that time buried in the earth, fighting for life, looking for meaning. Yet, strange as it sounds, all of us do. What makes Hector Tobar's book so moving and memorable is that somehow we are there in the mine with them, all of us.
Even though you know how the story ends, you don't know until you read this book, how the men were affected by their time trapped underground. The author does a great job of giving the reader a picture of what it was like from the miners perspectives based on a journal kept by one of the men and interviews with them and their families (obviously done after the event, by skillfully woven throughout the telling of the story). The mine's collapse is recounted in such a way that you feel the fear and dread the miners experienced. There is a large cast of characters (33), but the author does an excellent job of describing their personalities and emotions; their fears and hopes. It's a powerful story and sad. Even though they all survive (and I'm not giving anything away if you're familiar with the news accounts), all is not necessarily well when they return to their lives above ground. A must read if you're interested in the human spirit and how people persevere in times of disaster. These men are quite remarkable!
It's difficult to admit that twice I cried in reading a story who's plot had been spoiled by the evening news years ago. But this book tells a clear and intimate story of how these working class men -- and their families on the surface -- persevered through their ordeal. As the view first focuses on some of the entombed, and then to introduce their family, and then on to events that include others, and then to their families, this well planned portrayal is detailed yet never droll. The followup on lives after freedom tells of the ongoing traumatizing effects on those involved, as the world's attention moves on and assumes that all will be well.

This is a very very nice high class well put together book by GM and pricey Automobile Quarterly publications.lt came out in 1983 and starts in 1772. And yes it has my man William C. I got this book for my 2 year old after he loved the DON'T PUSH THE BUTTON. book!!! He loves this one just as much! I wish there were more of them. He has both of these memorized already and wants to read them all the time.. As I am writing this he went and got his to compare it to the one on the screen.. These are Great books! These are a must have if you have little ones!
My three-year-old LOVES this book. It's not too long, but it's interactive. He has to do something every page (push the button, etc). Books like these are our favorites, because he's involved in the story. It could be a few more pages long, but that's not a deal-breaker.
My kids love this book. We really enjoyed Don't Push the Button so there was no hesitation in buying this book. We have a lot of fun reading it together and the kids love acting out the different motions and sounds.
If you have a 3yr old get the book! You can make this reading adventure so much fun by acting out each page! So much fun and laughter and I highly recommend.
Love this as well as the "Don't Push the Button," and "Don't Push the Button Christmas Edition." These books will have little ones from 2yrs. to about 5 year olds giggling. Great gift item for small children to teach them that books can be fun.

My daughter loves this book! If you just read the book and do not want to be interactive do not get this book. It is not a book to read at bed time. It is a book that will let you play and be silly with your kids. She loves that he changes colors and you have to touch and shake the book at points. It also reinforces colors and counting which is always good in my book.
