The Sword and the Stone was one of my favorite books as a child and I’ve reread it several times as an adult. My paperback copy is getting old and brittle and I could see this version had beautiful illustrations so I decided to order it. I also own The Once and Future King so I was aware White revised the book quite a bit when he included it as the first part of his tetralogy; however, I was surprised to discover in the adventure with Robin and his Merry Men that White had changed the antagonists from the fairies or the Good Folk to the Anthropophagi. Wikipedia said White made some changes when The Sword in the Stone was published in the United States and that must be the explanation. Personally I prefer the version with the fairies so I’ll keep my old paperback just to read that section.I’d like to share one of my favorite scenes since I first read the book:“Oh, flout the boy!” cried Merlyn passionately. “You don’t seem to see anything this morning. What is it that you want me to do?”“Turn me and Kay into snakes or something.”Merlyn took off his spectacles, dashed them on the floor and jumped upon them with both feet.“Castor and Pollux blow me to Bermuda!” he exclaimed, and immediately vanished with a frightful roar.The Wart was still staring at his tutor’s chair in some perplexity, a few moments later, when Merlyn reappeared. He had lost his hat and his hair and beard were all tangled up, as if by a hurricane. He sat down again, straightening his gown with trembling fingers.“Why did you do that?” asked the Wart.“I didn’t do it on purpose.”“Do you mean to say that Castor and Pollux did blow you to Bermuda?”“Let this be a lesson to you,” replied Merlyn, “not to swear. I think we had better change the subject.”To conclude, as a child the anachronisms didn’t bother me because early in the novel Merlyn explains to the Wart that he lives backwards in time and knows about the future.

At first, I was excited we had found this book because we love Harry Potter and Howard Pyle's King Arthur and His Knight's of the Round Table. I was greatly disappointed though, when I scanned through it to find young Wart is sent to learn Wisdom and the History of the World or how man came into being from a .... SNAKE. As a Christian, I paused and said, ok... this is concerning, so I read further. I know different books like Rudyard Kipling's Just so Stories tell tales about the beginning of things. We like Kipling. But Kipling's stories come off as tall tales and just for fun tales. The Snake in this book, however, is considered authoritative about how the earth came about and how man and the animals all evolved from each other. The fish was the first person he says. (Come on... Fish are not people.) He says one individual does not matter, does not have a history. The whole of something has a history, but not a part of it. Like his snake family has a history, but he himself as an individual does not. An individual is too short lived to be of any special significance. That's too much wonky philosophy for my 8 year old. It had such potential. I'm sorry I paid good money for it.

Loved the hardcover! The book had picture pages on the inside which was cool. The only problem I had with this book is that I was reading it along side of a PDF of The Sword in the Stone that I had on my computer. The problem was that the PDF was the story out of The Once and Future King book, which means even though they are the same story, the chapters were off and The Once and Future King version of The Sword in the Stone had more details and additions to the story. This book was published after the original story; it has been revised and shortened.

The Once and Future King, which is built upon and uses text from the Sword in the Stone, is one of my favorite books. Much like the Hobbit is a sometimes silly preamble to the Lord of the Rings, The Sword in the Stone is the less serious story of King Arthur as a boy that sets the stage for the novel, The Once and Future King. And like the Hobbit, while it can be occassionally silly- a deadly serious and powerful story is just below the surface.White was clearly impacted by the struggle to hold views of evolution and a God-centered world view, and was also clearly impacted by the tensions of war torn Europe. He weaves some fun stories of Robin Hood, life in a hawk mew, and light-hearted jousting in with all his explaining and metaphorizing, though. I can't imagine not liking the vivid imagery and exotic story-telling, and if you are a fan of any of the other initialed British writers you'll certainly feel at home with T.H. White. Read the Sword in the Stone- it won't take much time, but then by all means read The Once and Future King one day for the real masterpiece.

I think this purchase gave quite good value for the money and would recommend the book to anyone interested in phonetics, whether as someone working in relevant fields (actors, speech language pathologists, etc.) or just as someone who is curious about the basics of speech production, language change, language learning, and the way various people deal with expressing themselves in the wide variety of languages in the world. The author writes well and has organized his material well. He also writes with good but appropriate humor which, happily, facilitates his explanations of occasionally complicated matters. It's clear that he is writing for a diverse audience and some of the later chapters were clearly primed for those specialists working with people with various types of injury-based speech impediments, but even these chapters were quite interesting, and remarkably clear (for this reader, who has no background or direct knowledge of the field). If I am seemingly so high on the book (and I am) then why not five stars versus four. The answer is simply that I bought the kindle addition and, while the text and larger diagrams were clear and had no discernible problems, a number of the charts laying out portions of, for example, the International Phonetic Alphabet, were extremely difficult to make out, given the shrinking of the page necessary to fit on a Kindle screen. This factor was a bit frustrating (although readily understandable), but still didn't prevent the purchase being extremely worthwhile.

Got this for my linguistics class. Has everything I need to get a hang of the IPA, and is in great condition

It helped break down phonetics very simply and well to me when I was struggling in the class. Couldn't recommend this book more as a supplement or on its own. It was recommended to me by my professor and I couldn't be thankful enough.

Fantastic book! For me, it's very helpful towards understanding Phonetics and the relationship to phonology. These topics are difficult and complex but this book, however you use it, will definitely make complex issues easier to understand. I intend to use this book heavily as I continue on in my studies.

Good for prepping you for a phonetics class. I bought it to prepare me for a graduate course I planned to take and I do feel like it is organized well.

I am very impressed with the content and presentation of the material in this title. Very well written, and I recommend it for all students of linguistics - linguists and language learners alike.

I'm a fan of good play-along book for drums and these is one of those book that made me a fan. The transcriptions are very good,and it has also the voicings which are very helpfull, the play-along tracks are very good as well and the Amazing Slow Downer gives you everything you need to learn each one of the songs in these book. You could fist listen to a track with drums, slow down and hear every beat with good detail. Then the drumless track lets you play (also at your desired speed) the whole song, so the experience is like having a complete band playing with you whenever you want. It difficult to find musician interested in funk and willing to expend as much time as it's needed to learn the songs. These book lets you do all of it at home, so you're ready to play live when the time comes

My fiancé started drumming in January of this year and wanted to learn a funk song so he chose to purchase this book. The main problem with some of the other books we've looked at is that they don't have notations for the entire song. This book has each song in its entirety, rather than just the most well-known parts. The CD it comes with is really cool because if you aren't quite fast enough to play along, you can slow it down while the pitch stays the same (so it doesn't sound distorted). The tracks are also great for background music while working on fills or funky beats of your own.

not bad! not my favorite funks songs but it'll do for teaching.

I am not familiar with any of these songs. But that makes it perfect to practice improvising to unfamiliar music! You can play a straight beat or stretch out and groove all over the place. And because I don't know how the original drummer played it, I can really have fun with it and not feel constrained to play what someone else played.Of course, they do have the original drum part on one track and the drum part taken out on the next track. So if you want to learn how the original drummer played it, you can listen, read the music that comes with it, and then go nuts.I don't believe that the original musicians played on this CD, but the quality is very good and sounds authentic. The vocal track is missing and that is the only complaint that I would have, but even that is not too big of a deal.This is a lot of fun to play along with weather you are a fan of funk or not. I do not really enjoy listening to funk, but I LOVE to play it!! Who knows, maybe I'll start to develop a taste to hear more!!!This is WELL WORTH the money. You will not be sorry. It even includes the Amazing Slow Downer software that will slow or speed the song without changing the pitch. Good stuff!!

Yes, the play along tracks are without singing, yes the drum parts on the charts can be a little different from the original, but hey !? what's the use of these books, just try to understand the way to play such style I think, so the goal is reached, and quite well. There is a really big effort done on the mix and the sound, it doesn't sound cheap.Furthermore, not having the singing on the part is a good way to force you to stay concentrate and listen to the music another way. This book/CD is definitely a good deal.
