This cookbook is pretty good, but seems to be focused on mostly recipes from American Chinese restaurants. This is not to say it isn't good - The Uncle Tommy's Roast Turkey recipe is terrific - but probably isn't your best bet if you are looking for an authentic cook book. I can recommend Land Of Plenty by Fuchsia Dunlop if that's what you're looking for. In this book you will find plenty of recipes that you will recognize, and the directions are clear and straightforward. We enjoyed the BBQ pork, and beef chow fun, but didn't like the recipe for Hot And Sour Soup as much as Ms Dunlop's. We have also found the organization of the cookbook can make it difficult to find recipes. Check out the table of contents, and if the recipes sound like what you want, then this is probably the right cookbook for you.A couple of notes:• This is Chinese cooking, so do all of your prep first, and use a lot of heat when cooking.• To get started, you will need Thin Soy, Black Soy, Bean Paste or Sauce, Hoisin Sauce, and Chinese Fermented Black Beans, which are not the same a domestic black beans.
I am pleasantly surprised that this book is full of classic authentic Cantonese recipes. I grew up in a very old fashioned Chinese household. Dinner was exactly as Grace described along with the life lessons. It literally feels like it was written by an older family member. To be honest, there isn't anything exciting about the recipes. They're simple day to day meals except for a few under Celebrations. Even for the holiday recipes, they're boring to me simply because I grew up eating the same foods and never did enjoy the holiday dishes. In my opinion, they appeal more to the older generation. Also, many of the dishes simply do not suit the younger generation's palate. I noticed that in this book and another by a different author, it states to use baking soda in meat dishes. Most Chinese families that I know will not use baking soda in their food because too much of it will cause stomach aches and it leaves a bad flavor in the meats regardless of beef, pork, chicken or shrimp. Many Chinese restaurants use baking soda to tenderize meats. I can always taste it. It leaves sort of an ammonia scent in the meat. Corn starch or tapioca starch works just as well and no smell. I suggest leaving out the baking soda in any recipe that calls for it. Also, food is a very subjective topic. To me, Grace's recipes provide the basics of those particular dishes but as you become more familiar with the dish, you will alter the recipe to suit your own preferences. I found that I had to alter some recipes to make them more modern and add a layer of flavor. This is a great book for beginners to traditional Chinese food but not for experienced home cooks. However, I must give credit to Grace Young for an amazing job translating the essence of Chinese cooking into English. She truly left no secret out!
If you're looking for the real deal Chinese household comfort foods, look no further - this book is legit. The recipes are simple enough to follow for the experienced cook, but beginners may find some of the techniques a little bit daunting. This is something one must learn through trial and error. For the Chinese American kids who want to cook like their awesome grandmothers, this is a good guide to start. Most of the ingredients and techniques are spot on, although I did spot a few recipes that had ingredients not included in the recipe, but showed up in the picture. I'm guessing this is because Chinese food is highly adapted to personal taste and individual family's takes on the dish (take the Jai recipe for example).It was really great seeing all the information on the various soups and their medicinal purposes - I've made the Apple Fig Pork soup several times now - it's great with fall here and winter approaching! All in all, this is a fantastic book to add to the recipe book shelf in your house. Highly recommended.
I bought the book and thought the e-book would be the same...wrong. It has the text but hardly any of the photos. So when you want to know what a particular ingredient or dish looks like you're out of luck with the e-book version. It's best to get the book.
I am amazed that I have found this cook book is an excellent cook book of Cantonese cooking. Simple method such as growing bean sprout and making a cake in the streamer are delightful and delicious. Though not too many photos of the dishes but the description is simple but clear and easy to follow. I specially enjoy the many dishes using steamer. The recipes include every day family cooking and banquet style cooking.This cook book written include introducing author family member on each chapter. Each share their wisdom with the reader but one can easily skip over and goto the recipe directly. This book is well done and great for people who want a real taste of Chinese family meal.

Great resource. Will purchase item again. I am now in the mist of the planning stages of our destination wedding.
For me, this book did nothing but waste my money. This book should have been entitled The Everything Destination RESORT Wedding Book because most of the information said "your resort should include..." I am not planning a resort wedding, and this book did NOTHING to help me. Save yourself the money, hit up the internet and do the research yourself. This book has nothing that you can't - and won't - find anywhere else. If you feel you need some book or magazine on destination weddings, pick up one of the many wedding magazines that are focusing on them rather than chucking out the cash for this. This book is especially unhelpful for those planning weddings within the continental US - just because it is still in the same country doesn't mean it still can't be a destination.
I found this book very helpful, especially when trying to pick a part of the WORLD to get married in and what factors we should consider. Unlike some other brides, I had not thought much about my wedding prior to getting engaged, except that I knew I wanted a destination wedding.This was my bible, especially for sticky situations like inviting kids, who is expected to pay for what, etc.I would recommend this book for people who are having a destination wedding outside of the U.S. And yes, you can find some of this stuff on the internet, but for me it was more handy to have in one book.Good luck!

I was extremely disappointed with this book - especially with the quality of the writing and the unsatisfactory organization. I found it difficult to follow the explanations of subjects that I already understood. It was essentially impossible to follow the discussion of material I was trying to learn.Alternatives: I found "Inside the Vacuum Tube" by John Rider to be an excellent and well written introduction to vacuum tubes; yes, it is over 60 years old, but I know of no better place to start learning the basics of tubes. For someone who knows basic principles of electronic circuits, I suggest "Valve Amplifiers" by Morgan Jones. Neither of the books I am recommending require a knowledge of calculus.
Highly recommended. This is an excellent book on the topic of vacuum tube audio. Especially well written and thorough treatment for anyone from the unknowing neophyte to the DIY project builder. Once I made my way to the triode and pentode coverage in the book: I had to have one! (Warning! Tubes can sound far better than what you are probably familiar with, and they require more maintenance. But: I'll never go back to solid state...)
The blueprint for the publication is just great. The tube preamplifier project is paramount for audiophiles, except for the choice of some tubes that can't be easily found requiring some rewiring on the socket soldering for equivalent tubes, hence.
The book is... strange. In fact it is a practical guide to build a few schematics from the RCA manual. The explanations and schematics seem to be simply copied from the manual (without any specific references). The author did not even change the terminology and the design goals, coming probably directly from the 1970s. He for example uses "PWB" instead of "PCB" and "inverse feedback" instead of "negative feedback". Aside of this nitpicking it seems strange that he talks extensively about the advantages of the negative feedback and power saving in the tube equipment. While it was actual at the time the RCA manual was written, today they are not the main goals of a tube audio designer. Speaking about the design. There is none. After reading the book you will not be able to design a new schematic or change an existing one much. For this I recommend excellent books by Morgan Jones. However the book contains useful information about building equipment but again, the Jones' book on this subject covers more material and makes you think in the right direction. The book may be useful for those who want just to build "something with tubes" with minimum hassle.
Firstly, any book on vacuum tube audio is or should be welcome, there aren't enough of them. It takes lots of effort to write and produce such a book, so that is the first star from me. Unfortunately, this is where the problems start (from the very start).1. The first two chapters (almost 50 pages) are not necessary.2. The title of the 1st chapter is totally wrong, it is NOT an overview of Vacuum Tube Audio Applications at all, but a weak overview of AC and DC principles, you will not learn much from such a superficial scan of hodge-podge topics such as "Dimensions of Hearing" and "the Atom" A drawing of an iron (FE) atom in a book on building tube amps???3. The 2nd chapter is better, but again, not deep or practical enough, and as such, not necessary.4. Some sections of Chapter 3, such as "Electron Optics" again have no place in a book of this kind. The computer "drawing" of a triode's construction on page 60 is weird, totally wrong or impossible to understand! The family of plate curves and transfer curves on page 78 show only the linear parts of the curves, this is NOT what real curves look like, misleading!5. The choice of circuits used as examples in Chapter 4 is strange, only one type of phase inverters is shown, and the section on "protection measures" does not mention any such measures, simply talks in general terms about maximum grid dissipation.6. Chapter 5, Interconnection, Layout and Operating Environment" is a total miss, a very shallow overview of an otherwise important topic.7. The language used throughout the book is very strange, very bureaucratic, such as: "A vacuum tube suffers wear-out because of a predictable chemical reaction" and then it continues "The cathode is the heart of any tube" without saying what that chemical reaction is and why is it important and why is the cathode the heart of any tube. Again, so is the heater, and the anode, and the grid ...8. Chapter 6 is so-so, but the photograph on page 148, showing 25 or so Heathkit instruments is weird. The caption says "Test equipment for audio project construction". You don't need most of these to build an amp, you may need a few basic ones to test it (such as a dummy load, a function generator, a multimeter and perhaps a scope).9.The choice of tubes in Chapter 7 again is strange. No 6L6, no EL34, no 6BQ5, no 6SN7 or any other commonly used tubes.10. Page 189 is the REAL start of the book and this is where in my view the biggest problem with the book becomes obvious, and that is its unsound methodological approach. For instance, the first power supply project is a regulated power supply. Why not start with an unregulated supply (90% of commercial amps do not use regulated power supplies), measure its performance, listen to both amps, then compare it with the regulated power supply IN THE SAME AMP? That would show the readers the benefits gained so they can decide if the prize is worth the price (complexity, cost, etc)11. The first of many PCB (or what the author calls PWB) designs is given here. Using PCBs in hi-end audio in my view is wrong, it over-complicates things, point-to-point wiring is much easier for constructors. PCB have only one advantage, and that is faster mass production. They have no place in making a one-off amp!12.There are quite a few errors and omissions in the book, to many to list here, one is on page 214, where a simple phono preamp diagram shows the use of a guitar jack at the input!?13. On page 254 the author says "Hammond (and perhaps other manufacturers) describes this as "ultra-linear operation." With billing like that, the author had to try it out." It seems the author had never heard about UL circuit or theory of operation before, patented by David Hafler (of Dynaco fame)and Herbert Keroes in 1951.14. The literature suggested again is very weird, you will not find books by Morgan Jones or the "Radiotron designer's handbook", but you will find books such as "Maintaining Electronic Systems" What the &%$@?In conclusion, I cannot recommend this book to anyone, despite my best intentions. It does not contribute anything new to the field, and should be read (but only the second half, after page 189) as one person's experience in building two of the designs from the RCA tube manual, nothing more and nothing less.
Excellent guide. Starts with the basis and then progresses to actual projects.

This review originally appeared on herestohappyendings.com.Fire Color One was an interesting little book with a unique plot that combined a teenage pyromaniac, the love for art, and a father and daughter being reunited ahd sharing secrets. It was also one of those books that I had a bit of a hard time connecting to the main character or the story, even though it was definitely an interesting one. It was a really quick read, and I finished it in a few hours. The twist at the end was one that I didn't really see coming at all, so that made the book quite the delight overall.Fire Color One is one of those that seems to have slipped under the radar for most, and I was really glad that I had the chance to read it (thank you, Penguin Teen!). Before I go through and mention the things I did and didn't care for with Fire Color One, let me start off by talking a little bit about the plot of the book."That's the thing about a good fire. It empties your head completely. It razes everything to the ground so there's nothing left. It's the very definition of calm."Iris has a love for fire. She finds herself setting fires - at first, tiny fires in the park, and eventually it escalates to almost burning down her school. Her mother knows she has a problem, and picks her up and moves her from her home to London, where her estranged father is living. While her mother insists that it is Iris's fault they are moving, in reality, it is because her father is rich and dying, and because her mother and step-father have racked up some much debt, there isn't anything left for them to do.When Iris's mother takes her to meet her father, Iris isn't sure what to expect. She has spent her life thinking that her father had abandoned her and her mother when she was a baby, and while she doesn't like the person her mother has become over the years, she doesn't think she will be able to face her father, either.As Iris spends at first a few minutes with her father, and then hours at the dying man's bedside, she learns more about her past than she could have imagined - including the fact that her mother hasn't been very truthful with her at all. While Iris's mother impatiently awaits his death so that she can claim the house, along with all of the valuable artwork and furniture, Iris finds herself wanting just a few more minutes with the man who hadn't been in her life until now. Just a few more minutes to learn about him, her past, and the secrets that they share.This book seemed kind of short, and while I understand that it might have been written this way to keep the pacing even, I feel like it took away from the ability to really connect with the characters in the story. I didn't have a chance to get to know any of them. To be honest, the only character's name in the whole book I remembered was Iris, because they all just felt sort of bland and not that interesting. I crave a story that's character driven, with plenty of development, personality, and, of course, characters that have dialog that doesn't feel forced, as it did here. I felt nothing for them, and I felt like it made the book unmemorable.However, the plot was enjoyable - a teenage girl who has a desire to set fires who gets swept away to London in order to visit her dying father, even though it's only a ruse on her mother's account so that she can collect his home and all of his artwork, furniture, and money when he dies. This is new, I haven't read anything like this, and I was pretty excited to dive in. The plot was memorable, enjoyable even. I honestly felt like this book could have been spectacular had the characters been developed a bit more during the story.Fire Color One has a great twist at the end - not something that I saw coming, so I was pleasantly surprised by it, that's for sure. When I had closed this book, I had to give the ending a round of applause.The book was a quick read - I read the whole thing in almost a single sitting. I did get rather engrossed in it from time to time, which is why I still gave it three stars. The plot was definitely entertaining and for the most part, really kept me guessing.Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review - Thank you!
FIRE, COLOR, ONE by Jenny Valentine is about as different from FUZZY, the book I reviewed last week, as you can get. Jenny Valentine's edgy young adult novel is a serious portrayal of Iris, a young woman caught up in the addiction of pyromania. With some language and an attempted rape scene, it might not be the book for every teen reader. But, it's also a story of healing, friendship, art, and found family.Plus, it's a story masterfully told through many flashbacks. (Disclaimer: since I listened to the audio book provided by Tantor Media, some of the quotes might not be as exact as if I had read the print version.)"I wasn't ready, once I found him, to let him go."That line from the book's prologue summarizes Iris's heartache and grief. Like a pretzel without beginning or end, this prologue is actually the end. From the beginning of the story, the reader knows Ernest, Iris's father, dies from cancer. What we don't know, is how she "lost" him.Enter the masterful flashbacks.As the story moves forward. the reader discovers that Iris, her selfish mother (Hannah) and egotistical step-father (Lowell) have returned to England. You don't know where they came from or why Iris is unhappy until Iris reflects on the fact that,"...when the only person you care about is on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and that person is not talking to you and you haven't had time to say goodbye and haven't had time to say I'm sorry."The reader discovers more backstory as Iris looks around her new sterile room and misses the California landscape, the posters on her walls, and Thurston standing at her window waiting for what they're going to do that day.FLASHBACKSValentine's masterful use of simple flashbacks layer in vital backstory but keep the story moving forward. As a reader/listener I was never bogged down in the past. Rather, these flashbacks always informed what was happening in the present.In this way, the reader learns how and why Iris began to set fires. She says, "Some days inside my head there is nothing but fire." Imagining herself setting a fire relaxes her and provides an adrenaline thrill of excitement and a rush of release. Iris is not an arsonist; she doesn't want to harm anyone or anything. But she is an angry, hurt young woman.Upon his request, Hannah brings Iris to her father's deathbed. Iris does not want to be near the man she believes abandoned her as a baby, but eventually bonds with him over art, music, and literature. As Iris watches her father draw near to death, she hears his story, her mother's story, and finally, the truth of her own story. Valentine fits these puzzle pieces together through one flashback after another.Towards the end, as Iris stands outside her father's bedroom door, she hears her mother talk about how dangerous she is as an arsonist. Iris has moved from not caring about her father, to being worried about what he'll think of her. "I knew there was nothing I could say or do to save myself." As she listens to her mother's betrayal, it's excruciating for the reader who knows that inevitably, Iris will start another fire looking for the calm, peaceful, emptiness it gives her. When her mother came to find her, "The next morning my fire was still smoldering. I was still angry. So is she."Valentine does an excellent job portraying Iris's troubled relationships with Hannah and Lowell. They are wannabe actors and their pitiful attempts at pretending to be people who they aren't is in juxtaposition with Iris's real emotional struggles and Ernest's serious physical struggles. Valentine's portrayal of Iris's grief after her father dies was authentic; it reminded me of how I felt when I lost a loved one forty years ago.When the reader gets to the end (which remember, is the beginning) Ernest gives Iris a huge surprise--after his death. Even within this last twist, flashbacks are folded into one another.STORY INNOVATIONCoincidentally, at the same time that I listened to FIRE, COLOR, ONE in my car, I listened to THE HOUSE GIRL by Tara Conklin on my phone. (Well, not exactly at the same time, but you get the idea.) Although this a totally different book (adult fiction with two POV: Lina is a white, modern lawyer; Josephine is a black runaway slave in Virginia before the Civil War) from FIRE, there have a lot in common. Both center on art and involve mothers who abandon their children in one form or another. There is a similar close POV (in FIRE it is first, in THE HOUSE GIRL it's a tight third) with well-chosen details showing the characters, their nonverbal language, and vivid settings. Like FIRE, THE HOUSE GIRL heavily uses backstory to propel the story forward. Much of this backstory comes from documents that Lina uncovers as she searches for a plaintiff in a civil rights reparations case.Conklin is as masterful as Valentine in weaving a story together. Both authors do not present books with a linear plot path of Beginning-Middle-End. The books reminded me of this recent article on Writer Unboxed in which Heather Webb wrote,Story—and innovation—is king. To keep readers coming back to the blessed book, it’s imperative to stand out in all the noise. Maybe this is why writers are experimenting with stylistic changes. Readers are demanding something sensational that really grips them, and even changes their view of the world. Writers can’t sit back on their laurels. They must STRIKE OUT and be unique, as well as create a story that’s universal. (You know, because that’s so easy.)There you have it. Two books which demonstrate exactly what Heather Webb described.THE NARRATOR and THE GIVEAWAYGemma Dawson, FIRE, COLOR, ONE's narrator, does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. I'm always impressed when a narrator does both male and female voices and flips between different accents without a hitch. It was interesting that Iris spoke as if she was British, although she spent most of her life in the United States. Perhaps it was because she ended up coming home to her British father.I am offering my copy of FIRE, COLOR, ONE to one of you.
