Rifkin presents scenarios that address these and many other questions. You may or may not agree with issues and perspectives in the book but its one book you can't afford to pass up.

This book is really two books. The first (Part I -- The New Capitalist Frontier) describes the changing ways that businesses are improving the value and cost of providing goods and services, by doing just what is needed and in a more pleasant way. This eliminates a lot of waste and inefficiency. Also, business has usually provided poor service, so competition is shifting into making better, more memorable service the key element. That book is clearly a five star book. Read all of it.The second book (Part II -- Enclosing the Cultural Commons) focuses on concentration of services being provided globally by fewer and fewer players. These global giants try to find the lowest common denominator in order to expand consumption. On the other hand, it all costs money, and most people in the world cannot afford these services. Does this create a loss for all? That's one fundamental question raised here. Unfortunately, the book focuses on the pessimistic side and fails to consider inherent counterbalances. The second fundamental question is whether 'virtual' experiences (whether on-line or in other forms) harms perception to such an extent that creativity and connection are lost at a more basic level. I rated this part of the book at 3 stars because it was an incomplete analysis, and had few recommendations. The author would have been better off writing two books and developing both properly, than in combining both. You can get most of what you need from the second part in the last chapter in the book. Then you can decide if you want to read the rest of that part.Let me address some of the author's concerns in the second part. Skip this part of my review if you are not interested in these issues.The book seems to ignore the role that family plays in establishing values, cultural norms, and in creating focus. The family does not appear in this book. With more ways for the family unit to be effective with one another, we actually have the potential for an age of enhanced 'authentic' living in our family units.The author also seems to give any credit to the idea that with technology costs plummeting there is no reason why access to the new forms of service may not become more universal than in the industrial economy. For example, there should be enough money to provide funds for the equivalent of electronic libraries in any community that has any way to tax its citizens. These should be one form of universal access. Charitable grants can provide much of the rest (in the same way that Andrew Carnegie helped establish the broadscale use of community public libraries).Next, he ignores the fact that electronic storage makes it easier to capture and maintain diverse cultural influences than ever before. As one bit of evidence, look at the proliferation of personal Web sites and their individuality. These electronic scrapbooks would not have existed before the Internet, even in paper form. Scholars and marketers will be reaching out ever more broadly to find what is unique and helpful in other cultures. Those influences will then be quickly brought into mass culture, where they will provide more benefit than they could as isolated cultures.Finally, there are many benefits of a more common world culture. It provides the basis of better understanding, more ways to share information and knowledge, greater recognition of important problems, and improved effectiveness in resolving those problems. The failure of the Tower of Babel kept diversity going, but at a high price after the ability to communicate with one another was lost.When the Industrial Age began, many argued that important aspects of rural life would soon be lost. An example related to the close relation between humans and their horses. Yet there are more horses in the United States today than there were before the Industrial Age began. Humans seek out 'authentic' experiences that have more meaning for them, regardless of how the whole economy evolves. For example, in this age of mass-produced commodity culture, fine art museum attendance is rapidly growing.Conversely, capitalism seems to be more effective than government in solving most problems that humans have. The book seems to suggest that we need an expanded role for government, just at the time that government is starting to shrivel away because of its ineffectiveness. This is clearly a Luddite argument by the author against the experience economy.Frankly, (and as the author points out) less and less work will be required to provide basic goods and services in the future. People will be healthier and will live longer. If we do not find more interesting things for people to do, life will be poorer. Authentic struggles will be harder to find, so simulated ones will be more valuable. In the same way that a fine novel can stimulate better character, why can't new forms of experience do the same thing?When you are done reading this book, ask yourself what experiences with biological and cultural diversity you would like to have. Then consider how you can most enjoyably experience those. If you act on those impulses and thoughts, you will have solved Mr. Rifkin's problem for him. And he will have done you a service by raising the question. That is a good example of an experience economy working well.Live long, prosper, and enjoy your experiences while being enriched by them!

This was my first encounter with the renowned R. Buckminster Fuller, and during the course of the book, with its odd abstract coinages and grand schemes, I frequently found myself debating the man's sanity. Sometimes he appears to be raving like a mad man, other times he is blindingly brilliant. I emerged with the belief that RBF was indeed sane, an archetypal genius engineer in the tradition of Archimedes and Da Vinci, and an inspiring, visionary character to boot. He was an odd duck, sure, but not a quack.RBF implicitly warns you in the beginning of Critical Path that he's a little different. He thanks his friend e.e. cummings for reminding him that to "be nobody-but-yourself--in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else--means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight." To his credit, RBF committed fully to discovering his original self and offering it wholly to the world. This actualization of individual potential should be what education facilitates for everyone; this should be what a human life is all about, and in this sense, Fuller's life is a model human life.While the content of Critical Path is not always compelling or even accessible, the reader always senses the presence of a grand, visionary mind grappling with the biggest human questions: Who are we? Why are we here? What should we do? RBF is admirably committed to serving humanity on a global scale and solving our significant social, political, economic, and environmental crises.He demonstrates that, contrary to popular opinion, we can all thrive. He exposes how selfishness and scarcity-thinking contribute to a massively inefficient economy and how, by conceiving of the world as one, we can easily provide for all humanity and take care of the environment. Fuller's inventions traveled far. Yet, it's tragic to recognize that, while Fuller and others like him have the vision and techniques to create an Earthly paradise, the power elite lack the will.We still have a long way to go.

Permit me to use this opportunity to lament the death of Prof. Fuller. To my knowledge, as of a couple of years ago, I was the last student of the last faculty member to have served in the same college (of engineering) at the same time as Prof. Fuller. In this sense, I regard myself as the last of the Fuller students. It seems that Prof. Fuller is truly dead, for all that university does now for Prof. Fuller is lend Prof. Fuller's name to a group of picnic tables, the purest insult if ever there were any. Perhaps the new engineering dean will fix that. But what I have done, so, too, must you. Read this book and add your own table of contents in the front pages to help you easily refer to Prof. Fuller's amazing observations as you continue to reflect for months and years after reading. And when you learn of a professor that is teaching similar philosophies, but not using Prof. Fuller's works, then send that person a small case of a good handful of copies of this book. This is the best book I know; however, humanity needs something better. Too bad there is nothing better, and too bad Prof. Fuller is dead.

This book always blows my mind. It's like seeing into the thoughts of a world mover. Check it out. The man certainly fell into the category of intuitive thinker, and his intuitions were mindblowingly accurate in a lot of respects. The same way his Buckyspheres unknowingly complimented the complex nanastructures of fullerenes based off of candle soot structures, the connections in this collection of essays come together to reveal what sometimes seems so complex with transitions in subject so quick, its hard to differentiate from the super associative ramblings of a schizophrenic, and yet, this was one of the most influential men of the 21st century, the second president of Mensa until his death. This book is also good to get a glimpse of what the scientific community used to be, before the streamlining of a post dot com/supercollider media image. This is the era mythified and laughed at in Johnny Quest and later Venture Brothers, one still full of hope and dreams.

I love reading Fuller, and this is a good sort of summation of his way of looking at the world. It's more comprehensive than the Operator's Manual for the Spaceship Earth and less dense than Synergetics. A good middle place to get a view of his scope of thinking.

Bought this when it was published and thought it was great but a hard read. Gave it to a friend so I bought this one to replace the original and it was exactly the same and in very good condition. "R. Buckminster Fuller" was a genius and had a hard time expressing himself without 20 dollar words and run on sentences you won't believe. But this book opened my eyes to the real world and the problems we face. However I am sorry to inform you that we , (the Human Race) hve passed the tipping point of no return in destroying our planet.

He did not have a happy start in Liberia, but after much struggle and a migration to present-day Nigeria, he found success as a merchant and set the ground work for a wealthy and politically established family that has had a great impact on the shaping of the region. The conclusion Lindsay presents is that â€œAfrica, rather than America, offered new opportunities for people of African descent.â€ â€œGo back to Africaâ€ is frequently used as an insult in American media and in historical accounts, but here this concept of returning to the ancestral land gains an economic and cultural strongpoint. Curiously, on the following page, Lindsay contradicts an early assumption she wrote into the book â€“ apparently, Vaughanâ€™s father was born in America, rather than in Africa, unlike the tale Vaughan was told or was passed down in the family. This is mentioned because if his father was born in Africa, his face would have been decorated with Yorubas facial marks that distinguished the main family trees in the region, and so Vaughanâ€™s relatives would have been easier to find than they ended up being.A great, innovative biography, history and cultural study of an alternative migratory narrative. Germs, bacteria, and viruses could fulfill man's desire for gruesome killings - for now!The book starts in 1984 Dalles, Oregon, when an Indian sect, the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, poisons the residents with salmonella. No one died, but nearly 1,000 were infected with a strain of salmonella that the sect had legally obtained, then cultured and distributed by spraying it on the food of the unsuspecting residents. The goal of the sect was to incapacitate the residents in order to keep them home and unable to vote in the coming elections! The authors show how easy it is for anyone to acquire and then scatter biological agents.The authors then describe other instances when biological agents were used, such as the Aum Shinrikyo sarin attacks on a Tokyo subway. They also trace the history of biological warfare, starting from World War II to the present.The authors also show how politics play a role in this biological warfare. Governments trick each other, making the other believe they have no biological weapons when in fact they do! They sign treaties between each other banning the culture of biological agents, but secretly break those treaties. The authors explain the biological agents that governments have cultured for warfare (such as Anthrax, and Ebola). They also make us aware that many scientists around the globe (especially in the former Soviet Union) who worked on biological warfare can now be easily recruited by other countries such as Iran and North Korea. The threat of biological warfare is still rising, according to the authors.Furthermore, they argue, germ warfare is suited to unconventional attacks by terrorists. Germs can kill as many people as atomic bombs, are more discreet to manufacture, transport, and use on targets. They also give time for the terrorist to escape (i.e. leave the country).The question that will linger on your mind at the completion of the book is whether doomsday will be a result of a massive nuclear war, of microscopic biological agents, or of as now an undiscovered and more horrific weapon!

To it's credit, the US got mostly out of the germ warefare biz...but Sadaam's preoccupation with weapons of mass destruction forced the US back in. 2)It shows how the Soviet Union misled the US just as badly as Iraq's dictator did. 3)It goes into stark detail on how deadly these weapons are and how easy it would be for terrorists to develop and use them..and get their desired deadly results. 4)At times it resembles a kind of scientific MYSTERY or THRILLER: it's a whosedoing it with an easy-to-read narrative style. 5)It outlines how researchers discovered precisely who is working on what and what it means -- and does it with a journalistic approach: quotes, facts, but a story with a beginning a middle and an all too possbily frightening end. 6)It is in itself a STRONG argument for eventual military action against Iraq: Sadaam remains the lingering threat, according to the authors. 7)It sets off the alarm -- but leaves room for hope. WHY YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE THIS BOOK: 1)If you're looking for a research document this won't be for you since it is a journalistic work. 2)If you're looking for a pure recitation of each kind of threat and what it means that is probably another book; the info is there but it is woven into the overall theme. 3)If you're looking for a book that says we are just a minute away from buying the farm, this isn't for you -- but you will get a sinking feeling at the horrorific threats out there. Above all: this book was NOT written to capitalize on the present climate...it was written BEFORE the recent tragic events, which makes its well-delivered message even more compelling and credible.

This book is a very good account of the history and possible future of germ warfare, the act of taking bacteria and viruses and turning them into weapons. The book makes the point that whereas the impact of most weapons - including chemical weapons -- are felt only by the people directly "hit" by the weapon, many types of germ weapon involve agents that can spread silently through a population as people infect one another. Among the many alarming things, the diseases that can be spread through germ warfare often cannot be treated, particulary if they are engineered to combine diseases or other resist antibiotics or other drug treatments.The book is very well written and researched, covering in detail the development of germ warfare in the US, the former Soviet Union, and Iraq. Perhaps most alarmingly, it seems that the barriers to producing germ agents are becoming lower over time --that germ warfare could be the "poor man's hydrogen bomb" -- a realtively cheap and invisible weapon of mass destruction that terrorists could readily use.The book covers a lot of ground in about 320 pages of text. It is of course all the more timely since the terrorist attacks on Septmeber 11th and recent distribution of anthrax in the mail. The book opens up some of the most recent US policy involved in protecting against germ weapons, including efforts to beef up the public health system. This is a book that deserves a careful read. Although it is not meant to alarm (and is in no way sensational), the book makes provides the background to realize how dangerous the threat of biological attack really is.

Shigeru tells and illustrates his autobiography as a child of the period of Japanese history he is also telling. He reason for this history as picture book if that Japanese students tend to receive a very sanitized version of Japanâ€™s role as aggressor in more than the 15 year period that the Imperial Japanese Army engaged in a number of incidents in neighboring Korea and China. As a graphic history, rather than a graphic novel it is a superior effort. Writer, artist Shgeru Mizuki is one of the top names in Japanese Manga. That is he is both an artist and a writer and became one years after losing his writing arm as a soldier in World War II. This is an easy recommendation for fans but a slightly less enthusiastic recommendation for a more serious minded reader.It is a fairly old story that Japan has not done a good job of teaching its 20th Century history to its students. They are aware that their country lost World War II but may have a little or no appreciation for the aggressive way their country helped to initiate the war and the often vicious method employed as warriors and conquerors.Showa is the name for the period of Japanese history corresponding to the reign of the ShÅwa Emperor, Hirohito, from December 25, 1926, through January 7, 1989. Mizuki also lived through this period and his intention was to tell his lifeâ€™s story as context for also telling something closer to the truth about how Japan acted during this era. He begins with a great earthquake in 1923 and follows with a series of episodes as the Japanese economy follows the worldâ€™s economy into what he calls the â€œAmerican Depressionâ€.Much of the narrative is carried by a famous Mizuki character called Ratman. Vaguely akin to Americaâ€™s Donald Duck but a more serious guide rather than a trickster. The narrative begins as mostly disjointed recollections and simple facts about certain events. The absence of analysis can make it hard to understand why we are being told things, but this is also the time of a very young Mizuki who may have only had a vague awareness of the larger events of his country.Towards the end there may be some analysis but never much and never at any depth. We are shown that the Japanese Army empowered itself to launch invasions and conduct military incidents seemingly despite or without any direction from the civil government. Ministers and opposing voices are assassinated with a regularity that has an almost casual feel to it. In a few years there are reported several attempted military takeovers, backed by killings and no one seems to have been held accountable in such a way as to thwart or deter the next plotters.If the historic content is lacking the artwork is not. Important people, events and iconic images are reproduced exactly using a technic developed to achieve photo realism. Other images are more impressionistic and typical of Japanese graphic novels, but this is a style all the author helped to develop.As a study, Showa is uneven and lacking in depth. As a Graphic History, autobiography and demonstration of the serious capabilities of manga it is more than worth reading. I will be seeking out a copy of the next collection of this 3 volume series.

This book is an incredible feat- a combination of history of Japan and a very personal autobiography. Mizuki manages to combine both with a dramatic presentation of a country spiraling into economic despair and blinding nationalism. He is unsparing when it comes to the country's misdeeds, and gives a sense of what people were thinking on the ground. His mix of drawing styles, tone, and narration are jarring at first, and his historical narrative is dense with facts and people, but once the reader gets used to the transitions, they really serve the overall historical picture in a way that any other medium simply could not.It seems that no one is harder on Japan, and on himself, than Mizuki. This is a man that does not look at his childhood through sepia-tinted glasses. He is the first to show the failings of his youth and those around him.This book is an immense challenge to translate, and Zack Davisson gives this work the translation it deserves. With cultural notes, historical notes, stylistic notes, and explanations about things that the average Japanese reader would instinctively know, the reader is guided in a way that only enhances the reader's appreciation for this work.I can't wait for the next volume!

A very deep and meaningful read, but also an exceedingly difficult one if you are not already versed in the basics of modern Japanese history. This book is not always in chronological order and simultaneously covers both the author's childhood and the history of Japan during this period. As such it can get pretty difficult to keep track of what is going on in Japan and in East Asia in general at the time, and how that plays into the overall narratives of the two stories. That understanding is crucial to the story, and while the author tries his best to insert explanations through lecturing cartoonish interlocutors, it was still written for an Asian audience with more proximity to and education in the events of the book. You may have a hard time keeping up if you're totally unfamiliar.

This is an outstanding comic. It combines a very strong survey history (absolutely everything with politics and the military, as well as a bit of culture) of the time with the personal stories of the author's childhood.The art is fantastic. Mr. Mizuki utilizes different styles for political/war scenes than for his personal stories. Additionally, he does a wonderful job drawing Japanese streets and the interiors of homes and businesses. It is a great view into the time period.Mr. Mizuki's historical survey shows the xenophobia of the Japanese military, the turmoil of the government, how the depression affected the farmers and common people, how the military used the depression and xenophobia to put a foothold in China, how the military created incidents with the Chinese to justify their invasions, and how the Japanese people suffered from the aggression of the military, weakness of the government and greed of the war profiteers.But the absolutely delightful part of this book are the childhood stories of Mr. Mizuki. He and his friends walked a total of 25 miles one hot summer day to try donuts (they were 3 yen each...they had 10 yen, so they couldn't take public transportation). The boys fought battles, threw poop at each other, studied the population of random cities, collected newspapers, and tried to make sense of the world around them (they were often confused by their families and teachers' reactions to the major events). Mr. Mizuki wrote that he slept late all the time and was usually late for school. He eats a lot, can't see well, does very poorly in school and college, gets fired from multiple jobs, and struggles early in his life. He is unsparing on himself. His family is poor, and his grandmother is a lovely lady. What is stunning is how his childhood in 1920s Japan is similar to mine (USA, 80s) and others. The imagination, feelings and struggles are universal.A wonderful book.

This book has been very informative regarding treatment for various offenders; juveniles, sex offenders; mentally ill; mentally retarded, etc. Valid research and resources are offered indicating outcomes of success and failures for programs in jails, prisons, and the community. It is quite interesting reading.

It looks like I bought the same book twice. I did, but I was thinking there were 2 editions, 1998 and 2001, and I was trying to get both. The book arrived very quickly and in great condition.

This is a really informative book, although I'm using it for school I know that this is one that I will be referring to throughout my education.

It was a book for school and it served it's purpose.

Outstanding book on Tibetan Buddhism. A bit long, especially with the history of it, but one can always skim through it. The part about the actual philosophy/religion was truly enlightening for me. I came away with knowing about the subject then I ever imagined. The author clearly has a passion for Tibetan Buddhism and some of the personal anecdotes really moved me. High quality book, written with an effective prose, tremendous content.

This is the first volume in Reginald Ray's two-volume introduction to Tibetan Buddhism. It focuses on the more conventional aspects of the tradition while the second volume (Secret of the Vajra World) deals with the more esoteric tantric components. Ray begins with a description of Buddhist Cosmology and he explains how Tibetans view that cosmology and integrate it into their daily lives. This helps to eliminate some of the dry scholasticism so often found in various introductions to religions. The fact that Ray has been a Buddhist practitioner for many years as well as a Western academic allows him approach the subject sometimes as an insider, a Buddhist who has participated in rituals and meditated on teachings, and sometimes as an outsider, a professor who can describe Tibetan history and Buddhist teachings in the more conventional academic way. I found this approach to be very effective, and Ray is able to maintain a balance somewhere between writing a love letter to his personal religious tradition and writing about Tibetan Buddhism as though it were a mysterious phenomenon from an alien world.I thought this book was organized very well. After the introduction on cosmology, it begins with a section on the history of the spread of Buddhism to Tibet, including a short discussion of the forms of Buddhism in India during the times leading up to both the early and later transmissions of Buddhism to Tibet. There are sections on the various "schools" of Tibetan Buddhism, the Nyingma, Kadam, Sakya, Kagyu, Gelug, as well as a section on the Ri-me (nonsectarian) movement of the 19th century. Ray stresses two trajectories within Tibetan Buddhist practice, scholarly monastic traditions and non-monastic tantric lineages, and compares the emphasis on each within each of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In fact, this dichotomy undergirds his entire discussion of Buddhist history.The next section contains a detailed discussion of the view and practice of Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism, respectively. Ray describes the view that is cultivated in each of the vehicles and then describes how that view influences one's meditation and ethical activities. It is important to note that Ray emphasizes that this division is merely a didactic convention and that, within Tibetan Buddhism, "Hinayana" does not necessarily refer to "Theravada" Buddhism. The final section introduces the gradual development of Buddhist philosophy by using the traditional framework of the "Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma." These three turnings are the Abhidharma system, Madhyamaka philosophy, and teachings on the Buddha-nature. This is likely the most difficult section of the book for those relatively unfamiliar with Buddhism, but Ray does an admirable job succinctly presenting the tenets of each system. He also briefly summarizes the debate among some Tibetan schools as to whether the second or third turning constitutes the final, ultimate teaching of the Buddha.Again, this book is a comprehensive introduction to Tibetan religious thought, both its history and practice. It does not focus so much on Tibetan culture, but that is not its aim. Whether you want to learn about Tibetan Buddhism from scratch or wish to augment what you already know, I highly recommend this book. Perhaps the best praise I can give is that I plan to read the companion volume, Secret of the Vajra World, another 400+ page book, very soon.

This is volume one of a two part work on Tibetan Buddhism by Reginald Ray. It is well-written, extremely comprehensive and thoroughly researched. There is an overwhelming amount of detail for most beginners, however.If you are looking for a detailed scholarly work or a good reference to contextualize other reading, this will meet your needs. However, you may want to try an "Introduction to Tantra" by Lama Yeshe for a more accessible introduction to Vajrayana.If you are completely new to Buddhism, then I would recommend Huston Smith's "The World's Religions" for an excellent, but short overview. If you purchase this book, you will have added the bonus of being able to read a similar introduction to Hinduism which I think is important for understanding Buddhist thought in a similar way that grasping the essentials of Judaism are important for a full understanding of the origin and development of Christianity.It is very difficult to "get" Tibetan Buddhism without understanding the unfolding of the Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. While this volume does an excellent job of doing this, it is also HUGE. The disadvantage of some of the short books on Tibetan Buddhism is that they sometimes don't do a great job of contextualizing the various Buddhist traditions and how they unfolded in time and/or geographically.If you merely want a taste of Tibetan Buddhist thought, then you may want to look at the book "The Art of Happiness" by Howard Cutler and the Dalai Lama. This presents some Tibetan ideas on everyday issues along with some commentary by a western psychiatrist. This book is not an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism as such, however.If you click on my name, you can read my reviews for the books I mentioned above or scroll down to them if you look up the books. This is the best book I have ever read as far as each and every Tibetan tradition of Buddhism goes.This book offers insight into the major traditions and various branches of Buddhism and also a small look into the lives of various Buddhist saints and how they were able to become who they became.A great read and very very informative.

Contains pretty much everything one would first want to know about exoteric Tibetan Buddhism than can be said clearly in under 600 pages: descriptions of the major schools, biographies of their most influential figures, explanations of the relevant teachings from each of the three turnings of the wheel of dharma, Tibetan cosmology, the importance of the Bodhisattva vow, etc. I personally came away feeling like all the right decisions were made on what to include and what to keep out, and all done in a very readable manner without ever seeming to become bogged down in detail. The author also uses some descriptions of personal experiences to great effect, and I got the impression that he's a highly committed practitioner who's really seeking to benefit others with this book.

This book was very informative. I wish I'd read it a couple of years ago as it would have saved me a lot of time and $ for other books on Buddhism I've bought and read that didn't lay it out in such an understandable way as Reggie Ray did. I'm awaiting the mail today for his next book.
