One of the things I have always liked about Mike is that he is not a traditional government bureaucrat as he often refers to throughout the book. He is an excellent writer and draws the reader in from an early stage, during those meetings with Vladimir Putin where he accuses Ambassador McFaul of directly of fomenting revolution against him you feel as if you are in the room with him. Mike also does a great job of providing not only his career context but a broader historical context that incorporates the post World War II and Cold War international order and clearly lays out the steps to how Russia got be where it is today under Putin and his vital role in it. He covers everything from his time as a student in the former Soviet Union to Donald Trump and election meddling, it is a great read!
This is an excellent account of the events in the US -Russia relationship, written by one of the principal actors in that relationship. McFaul stepped out of a long academic career as a Russia expert to work for Obama’s campaign and the White House as a Russia advisor before becoming the US ambassador to Russia.The book is a reminder that seven years ago, the US enjoyed good and productive relations with Russia under Medvedev. McFaul is able to walk the reader through the long series of events that took us from that relationship to the contentious and difficult one we have now.The book is also a fascinating inside look at how foreign policy is made and how an ambassador does his job.
It is entirely clear why Russia, now run by the autocratic Putin hated America, its democracy, and subverted the norms of international behavior after reading McFaul’s masterpiece. From the Georgian war and annexation of Crimea, Putin clamors for the perceived glory of the Soviet past and will stop at nothing in his attempts to undermine his adversaries. His abuse of power and destruction of his enemies, by whatever means to preserve his kleptocratic Oligarchy undermine the safety and security of the entire free world. Were it not for Russian intervention in the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections, the sanctions would be far more severe. The murders of Boris Nemtsov, Sergei Magnitsky, Alexander Litvenenko, Anna Politkovsnaya, amongst 36 other men and two women opposed to Putin and the two nearly fatal attacks on Vladimir Kara-Muza and Alexei Navalney point to a mad man who will stop at nothing to hold onto power. Mcfaul provides a clear-eyed view of the true, but unrealized potential of the Russian Reset and the primary person responsible for its failure, not Mcfaul, Clinton, nor Obama, but Vladimir Putin himself.

I developed an interest in Communism and in the Soviet Command Economy in the years of intense anti-communism in the 1950’s and 60’s and majored in Comparative Economic Systems specializing in Eastern Europe because I wish to see through the prevailing wisdom of the time critically. I hoped not to judge but to understand the why and wherefore of what was developing in that region, the underlying ideology a given, neither a ‘threat’ nor a ‘promise;’ the Soviet Union the prevailing model. About the Author
Elyse Zorn Karlin, curator of Maker & Muse, is a jewelry historian and co-director of the Association for the Study of Jewelry & Related Arts. She is freelance curator and author of several books on historical jewelry. Emily Banis Stoehrer is the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator of Jewelry at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She was the co-curator of Hollywood Glamour: Fashion and Jewelry for the Silver Screen (2014) at the MFA. Sharon Darling is a retired curator and museum director with a special interest in Chicago decorative arts. She curated the seminal exhibition Chicago Silver and authored the accompanying book, which presented new research on the Chicago Arts and Crafts movement. Jeannine Falino is an independent curator, a museum consultant, and an adjunct curator at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. She was co-curator of the recent exhibition Gilded New York: Design, Fashion & Society (2013) at the Museum of the City of New York. Yvonne Markowitz is the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. I just finished "The fear of insignificance" and I highly recommend it. it does a fantastic job of diagnosing the particular malaise of living in the 21st century. It also does a wonderful job of laying out some possible, if idealistic, solutions to the challenges we all face. But most of all I love how he elaborates and extends the great traditions of the ancients, philosophers such as Kierkegaard and Nietszche, early moderns like Freud and his crew, and even my hero Ernest Becker, into the actual world – with its interconnected iPads, globetrotting, celebrity, infotainment, Klout, and collapse of all traditional meaning systems. There are many powerful passages and much to chew on (the notion of "Homo globalis" and the critique of Nike's 20-year ad campaign are priceless), and despite some small structural defects, it is a slim masterpiece.
I enjoy reading Strenger though he is not an easy read. His references are constant reminders of how uncouth an American I am. But I am so thankful for what he adds to the craft.
Great book -- Mr. Strenger articulates the stresses of what seemingly shouldn't be so stressful, and a way out of the morass.
So far, for me, this is one of the best books related to Ernest Becker's The Denial Of Death. It is one great read!
A more suited book for those who have studied in depth this topic. Unfortunately I haven't so struggled to fully understand it's content. It is not a poorly written book,on the contrary a very imformative book. Just not suited to me.

What is a good life in this new world where success is defined by the global information and entertainment systems? Carlo Strenger's answer to this question is the basis of The Fear of Insignificance. This is not a light or easy read, but I found it so compelling that I finished it in two days. Strenger argues that many of us who have chosen good professions feel diminished when we compare ourselves to the global elite who seem to have it all. And, that current self-help / law of attraction belief systems are unhelpful as they do not allow for the graceful acceptance of human limitations. Overall Strenger makes a case that to live a valuable life we must accept the tensions of life and seek a thoughtful, educated approach to our lives.
"The fear of insignificance" explores the popular mindset today--one that includes obsession with celebrity, status, and one's position in the world. Strenger analyzes the dangers of being dwarfed by the have-alls, and feeling insignificant and unhappy with one's own life as a result.The book is divided into three parts: "The Defeat of Mind," "From the I Commodity to the Dreams of Individuality," and "Reclaiming Our Minds." The first part delves into the popular belief system advocated by the modern media, most notably the "just do it" campaigns where celebrities, while marketing a product, are held up as heroes while they preach that anything is possible if one just reaches for the stars. The problem with such a popular belief system, as Strenger analyzes it, is that it's very easy to believe but not as realistic in life. The second part of the book puts emphasis on refraining oneself from seeing their life in terms of satisfying others and how much money one makes, but instead working on getting a satisfaction with the life one has. Stenger reflects that everyone is born with some limitations, and the people who make it to the top are no exceptions: they either had connections, luck, or some other unpredictable factors that lead them to success. Instead of buying into the star and dream obsessed media culture, Strenger advises people to avoid seeing themselves as "commodities," shun away from comparing themselves to others, and venture throughout their own lives with an open heart and mind--something discussed more in the third part of the book, along with religion.Overall, I thought Strenger's convincing argument was very relevant to today's "keeping up with the Jones's'" world. He recounts meetings with different people who had "respectable" jobs, families, and supposedly perfect lives---until they realized it wasn't what they wanted. Indeed, Strenger previously noted that merely having what used to be a respected job (medicine, law, engineering, etc.) was no longer enough when media continuously obsesses over the networth of singers, movie stars, and athletes. It is so easy to see oneself as very much in the bottom rung of this supposed pyramid. But Strenger's book rightly disagrees with such pessimistic views, and instead focuses on the realistic--the ability to work with one's limitations and actively accept yourself. While much of the writing is very academic, it doesn't take away from its relevance. Somebody experiencing a mid-life crisis or otherwise unhappy with life might benefit from Strenger's reality check.
